Hello, my name is Jake from Phoenix, AZ. I have just recently purchased a new Nexxus as my first "real" ball and quickly realized how horrible my bowling form is. I have been researching as much as possible, so I figured I would join a forum since they have helped me with other hobbies before. This season will be my first time bowling full time in a league with my work. Last season I subbed for them and averaged a 175 (with a crappy plastic ball) after about 20 games.

welcome to the forum Jake. 175 with plastic, not too shabby. There are several threads here with youtube links showing correct form, etc. Also on youtube you can type in Team USA bowling tips. Carolyn Dorin-Ballard has an excellent drill/tip there called the handshake drill to learn a basic hook. Other websites with great info by world known coaches include Joe slowinski's www.bowlingknowledge.info and Ron Clifton's www.bowl4fun.com

Welcome Jake, I've only been on the boards a few weeks and I've gotten great advice so far. Everyone is friendly and willling to help. I would bet your form isn't as bad as you think it is. Probably a few tweeks here or there and you'll be stylin!

Thanks guys. The main problem I am having right now is, I have never had a free arm swing. I have always started out with the ball extremely low then muscled it back then muscled the ball out in front of me using my elbow to snap the ball as hard as I could. Now that I have a good 16lbs ball, doing that is going to destroy my arm and I can't get any speed on the ball.

I think I am going to give this drill a try when I go to the lane this weekend http://youtu.be/2NhM3tights

My push away use to go in front of my face. Now I start with the ball low. It's more how Rhino Page does his. Watch as he lifts it up, no higher than parallel, and lets gravity pull it down. I lift up on the first step of my 5 step approach and this has helped me get my ball speed up and keep a free arm swing.

I had the exact problem myself. I had a lesson yesterday, and he told me I was muscling the ball too much. In my case, it's a bad habit, formed by two handing. I concentrated hard on letting gravity pull the ball down, not pulling it through, but just let gravity do its thing. Took a few throws but I got the hang of it. The great thing about gravity, it's a constant, so theoretically if your letting gravity to the work, the ball should come off at a consistant speed.

I worked on letting gravity control my arm swing on Monday, but I everytime I did that I couldn't get my wrist back under the ball on the down swing or even on the side for that matter. I'm hoping I didn't make the mistake of getting too heavy of a ball

Why not just keep your wrist under the ball through the whole swing? It feels odd at first and makes the back swing feel short, although it isn't, and will allow you the chance to come around the ball when needed/wanted.

I am going to give that a try. I decided I want to go bowling now that I am off of work. hopefully I can get a friend to come along and video tape me. I have never seen my self bowl before and that seems to help a lot of people

Videos help tremendously. If you post it on the site, a few of the coaches here can give you very good advice on proper adjustments.

Off topic, but what kind of Cuda do you have? I'm restoring a 70 Cuda right now.

I am a pretty avid rock crawler and own what used to be a K5. All my wheeling buddies call me Cuda, therefore the name Cuda K5 came to be.

My new boss is 55 years old. His first car was a Cuda and he still has it! It's currently in the last bay of the shop being restored in his spare time.

First off Welcome to the forums

This is still a little bit off topic but I wished I still had my Hemi Cuda I had a
1970 model it was a red one with a black vinyl top. It was a 426 Hemi with the
dual 4bbl carbs with a 4 speed and the dana 60 rear end. This is not an actual
picture of it as I couldn't find any pictures of it laying around anywhere if I even
have any pictures of it left anymore but this picture was as close to what I had
as I could find only mine had the black shaker hood scoop where this picture has
a red shaker.

It was such a gas hog back then even when premium gas was only 0.35¢ a gallon
that and I couldn't keep my foot out of the 2 4bbls and tires on the back that I went
out in 1972 and traded it for a Chevelle a Heavy Chevy as it was called with a 350 4 bbl
4 speed and a 3:70 posi rearend. I found the only picture that I could find right off hand
that was taken just after I lost it and clipped the edge of a bridge it didn't do a whole lot
of dammage though so I got lucky I guess and I wish I still had it too.
