just curious. i imagine it wasnt around during the time of wood balls so when is the earliest time before rubber balls?
this question excludes the obvious 80-90's process of plastic to resin. i mean the dead earliest.

Balls were hooked (meaning curved into the pocket) long before that at least in the 50's.
Here's a video from 1955 and they talk about hooking the ball.

I imagine it started the first time a smart *** young male grabbed a ball and spun the crap out of it. After seeing the pin action others soon quickly followed.
