Failure to complete game/series on first night of league

I'm looking for information on how to average/handicap a player who failed to complete her 3 games on the first night of league.

Our league doesn't use the book average from previous season, we establish it after the first 3 games are bowled at the start of the new.

Our Absent League score is 120. She rolled game one with a final score of 121. Game two: She rolled the first two frames; 9- and -- (two gutter balls). She dropped out due to illness.

According to Rule108 - Failure to Complete Game

She is credited for the frames bowled equaling 9 + (8 x 12.0) = 105

Game three then would be the Absent score of 120 w/72 handicap (90% of 200 Scratch)

What would the handicap be for the first two games and what average will she have without completing 3 full games?

Here's from the USBC rulebook and seems to be on point.

Commonly Asked Question – Rule 118c.
118c/1 The league rule requires three games be bowled to establish an average. A member
bowls a 120 for game one and a 150 for game two and cannot bowl game three. What
score is used for the missed game? How are average and handicap figured?
In a handicap league, if a bowler does not have an entering average or until they meet the
requirement(s) defined by league rule, handicap is based on the average of all games bowled.

In the example given, the score for game three would be calculated by adding games 1 and
2 together (120 + 150 = 270 actual pinfall), then dividing by total games bowled (270 ÷ 2 =
135 average). This will give you the bowler’s average which is used for handicapping purposes
for all games of the series. To determine the absentee score for game three, the bowler would
use the established average less ten pins (135 - 10 = 125 absentee score) unless league rules
state otherwise.

So since she bowled one full game (121), the average would be based on that. So a 121 average to base the handicap on.

So handicap 200-121=79 79X90%= a 71 handicap for each game.

and the third game would be a 121-10 for a absentee score of 111 (assuming you take 10 pins off a absentee score)

Game 1: 121 + 71 = 192 handicap game

Game 2: 105 + 71 = 176 handicap game

Game 3: 111 + 71 = 182 handicap game

Scratch series: 337
Handicap series: 337 + 213 = 550 handicap series

In the leagues I bowl in,she would be given a standard 150 avg for the 2 games not bowled. So she would have 120+150+150=420 which is a 140 avg w/54 handicap.

I think you meant 121 for the first game, "She rolled game one with a final score of 121"

And since she bowled 2 frames of the 2nd game it would be covered by rule 108a (and it doesn't say that a league rule can over ride this one) so you couldn't use a vacancy score.

As for the 3rd game rule 118c would seem to say you use a absentee score not a vacancy.

First off it was the first night of leagues,so how can you have an absentee score without an established average? In all the leagues i've bowled in,they have always used the vacancy score until an average can be established. Once the average has been established,then you can use the absentee score.

I know i'm right per USBC rule #13! USBC Rule#13 states that if their is an absentee or vacancy you use avearge score minus 10,unless the the league has establihed rules regarding absentee or vacancy then those rules will be used.

Heres from the rule book, it shows how right here. They figured the average, handicap and a absentee score for the first night situation.

the only thing different in this example is they bowled 2 games out of 3. not one and a partial game like she did.

In OP's situation she bowled one full game (a 121 in the first game) out of 3 games.
and 2 frames of the 2nd game.

so the average would be figured from the one game. (the average of all games bowled.) 121 / 1 = a 121 average.

that average would be used for handicap and the absentee score for the 3rd game.

also she couldn't a vacancy or a absentee score for the 2nd game, because she bowled part of it. you figure the score using the formula in rule 108

The only real question maybe the third game, as I said in the post to you "As for the 3rd game rule 118c would seem to say you use a absentee score not a vacancy." But the rule also says for the third game "unless league rules state otherwise." so it might could be a vacancy for just that game. Depending on the league rules, and if it did use a vacancy the handicap would be the vacancy handicap, not the handicap used for the other two games.


Now she would be better off in your league, your way gives her a higher score.

Also you can't base a average on vacancy scores and vacancy scores in most leagues have their own handicap. So you can't change the vacancy handicap to one based on some other figure. If you use a vacancy score you would have to use the vacancy score handicap the established.
