Ball Weight

Why is it that when you weigh a ball after drilling and it's suppose to be a 15 lb. ball, it weighs 16.2 lbs? The pro shop weighed mine and they used a balance beam with counter weights instead of just a scale and it weighed 15.2 lbs. So I took it to the post office and it weighed 16.2, so on two normal scales it weighs 16.2 lbs and in the pro shop its about a full pound less. What the heck? So if I want my ball to be about 15 lbs I have to order a 14 lb. ball? Makes no sense.

I would go back to the pro shop and have it rechecked. His scale could be off or he missed weighed it.

Or if he didn't have 15pder maybe he slipped you a 16 thinking you wouldn't notice. (assuming you wanted a 15 in the first place)

I did order 15 in both cases and I have no idea what was on the box. I watched him weigh the ball and then he turned it 180 degrees and the weight changed...due to the core location and the fact he was using a balance arm and not just a scale to set it on.

First there is nothing wrong with using a balance arm scale to measure gross weight.

That fact that he was rotating the ball and the weight changed doesn't really say anything. He could have been checking the static weights.

As I said I would go back to the pro shop and have it rechecked.

The post office scale could be off...as a way to get a couple extra bucks...but take it back to the shop like bowl said...only thing though you would be able to tell the difference if you have another 15lb ball

Also keep in ming the weight of the boxes presuming you double boxed the ball, It is not unusual for a 15lb ball to weigh 16 plus when shipping

It would depend on how much the ball weighed in the first place.

Anything below the next full pound is the lower weight (15 pounds 10 ounces is considered 15 pounds). Most companies keep them an ounce or two above the pound so they will be about right after being drilled.

ok thanks. As you can tell it's been 13 years since i've really bowled. I'm trying to learn all the bowling lingo and all cause i'm like a 4-5 on a scale of 1-10 on bowling knowledge.
