I was looking around youtube today and I found some cool old bowling videos. It cool to see what was going on in the sport 60+ years ago.

Here is another oldie. Check out the ball return at the 0:20 mark. I have never in my life seen a return like that. The crazy thing is some of the advice in this one is still relevant.

Wish they still made lanes that have Ball over lane returns it looks so cool. Probably some stupid rule is why they stopped

The guys who like to stand way left and throw the huge hook would hate it. Even if they weren't at the point of needing to loft the gutter cap where it would actually be in their way, it would still bother them to have it right next to them.

I still bowl with above ground returns, sometimes you do end up kicking them when you are bowling on the right alley. It's just something you get used to and gives you a "home field advantage" when they hold tournaments there.

There is (or) maybe was I'm not sure if it is still there or not
I haven't been up there in over 12 years a bowling alley that
still had the above ground ball returns about 50 miles from
here. I used to go up there every so often maybe a couple of
times each month and bowl a sweeper or two or maybe some
kind of local tournament that they used to have.

I kind of hated the above ground ball returns as it made me
loose focus on what I was doing sometimes when the ball
came rolling back along side the lane. Yes those long ball
returns do get in the way if you really have to move left on
the approach and play deep on the right lane.

These videos are all on my YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/BowlingOldies . Glad you've enjoyed them. There are gobs more there (about 200 videos total), including more old-timey film shorts, industrial films about pinsetters and bowling lane equipment, newsreel features about such things as the very first automatic pinsetter, and a ton of old pro bowlers matches, including some vintage ones that were telecast in black and white.
