View Full Version : I think I found a way to improve my speed slightly.

I think I learned something from watching Ryan Shafer on some tournament, they were commenting how they were coaching him to have a rounder push away. My memory is fuzzy. But basically what I do now is kind of like a hinge where I uncurl while slightly lift up/push up (think of a candy cane top). Of course he has a much different down swing where it's like he shoots the ball on to the lane.

So I was around 14-15 mph
You all say qubica is usually 2 mph slower right?

It's not that it's slower, it's just that it measures the speed down toward the pins. The ball loses speed going down the lane.

The average loss is around 2-3 mph, so if the monitor shows say 15 mph. your release speed is about 17-18 mph.

yeah i agree with bowl1820 there in his first sentence.

but i can say this i never knew that the ball came out of my hand faster then when it hits the pins when i get the reading till bowl1820 told me awhile ago and know ik and my ball hits the pins at 18-19mph so that's about 20-21mph at my release and i hold my hands as far down as i can(at my waste) before my backswing but my spare shot's are different there at 23mph (at pins) cause i hold the ball at about just below mid level on my upper body.

soo to change the speed it depends on how high and how low you are holding it on your body.

Also the speed of your feet. If you take 4 quick steps as opposed to 4 slow steps in your approach you will have more speed but a shorter arm swing and with the slower steps youll have a longer arm swing and generally a slower ball speed.

Using the hinge, your ball would normally just drop from your stance on your first step and go into your backswing on the second. As Ed just said increasing your foot speed should help you get a touch more speed. Just be careful that you don't get to the line too early and lose your balance. The leverage you can gain is greater, but do it so you are completely balanced at the line.

ball99999....How was the end result?

The end result was what he posted in his first post of this thread. If you actually would read the posts instead of just adding crap to try to win a ball, you would know this. He had another thread on how to gain speed where the proper way to gain speed was discussed at length. This was more of an update of something he saw that he believes will or has already, helped him achieve a higher speed.

I've been trying to run with the ball.. all kinds of different step patterns etc.. nothing really helped me. This slight up and away thing has helped but not a whole lot. Oh well just gotta live with it. If I have good accuracy I can just adjust other stuff.
