View Full Version : Keeping the pins low for more carry?

The Storm Lucid can be a very versatile ball. With the OOB matte finish, it starts earliers than the Anarchy and can work through heavy oil. With polish, the Lucid gets through the heads clean and stores energy well - but it more controlled (less angular) than the Anarchy in the backend, and in my opinion hits better. One of the things I really noticed was how the pins stay low to carry more of those corner pins.

My question is this: How can a ball, (this was written about the New Storm Lucid ball), keep the pins low? I would think that has to do more with speed and maybe angle then design of ball ball?

Okay Mike I've heard this statement many times over the years about this ball or that ball too. I never thought about, till you said something and what does it mean.

So after doing some research I have a answer to what keeps the pins low. ready now it's.... Gravity.

Yes, gravity is what keeps them low.

Here's from where I asked Mo Pinel:

Ques. What is suppose to be keeping the pins low? is it some property of the ball? or the angle, speed of the ball as it hits? Or is it just marketing?

Answer:The balls doesn't keep the pins low; GRAVITY DOES!!! The rest is BULL PUCKY!!!!!

I thought it might just be B.S!! lol,,, but then why lie? It was part of the hype used in the new Lucid advertising! LOL I do think one thing that does keep them lower it Ball speed period!!

Lol, One of the best answers i ever heard.

The only time i see pins keep low is when the someone rolls slow.

Wait, so you mean there is no magic ball out there that always keeps the pins low? I thought the Virtual Gravity actualy created a gravity field that pulls the pins down.

Hummmm,,, My Virtual Gravity does create a force field! You might check the batteries!!!!

It only makes sense! The slower the speed, the lower the pins will fly! Yes, Iceman had the answer! I do think that there is a optimum speed that each type of bowler can throw his Magic Low Pin trajectory ball in order to get maximum pin displacement! ( I did have physics 105 – 106 in College!) Iceman is no block of Ice!!! Try out different speeds, you will find that when that PERFECT speed is reached, you scores will defiantly go UP,,, while the pins go Down! Lol

It's obvious that Storm puts extra gravity in the Lucid. When it hits the pins, the extra gravity makes the pins stay low. I think it's a shame that the USBC has done NOTHING to regulate the amount of gravity that companies are putting in to their balls. :(

Is Mo a straight shooter or what? I enjoy going over to his forums and reading all his replies.

We need that quote to reply to all the generic ball reviews posted here.

Tonight I threw a perfect pocket shot on one of my balls and had a "high jumper" jump right over the 7 pin. I went up to Mike and jokingly said, "Boy, I sure could have used the Lucid on that ball, needed the pins to stay low." lol.

Why? Because the advertiser's lips were moving. Marketing is marketing. No magic there.

I did an experiment last night before league,,, I threw a ball at a very high speed, ( and YES THE PINS FLEW HIGH, LIKE AN EXPLOSION WAS UNDER THEM! ) Then ( I threw a medium speed, and a slow speed ball) The ball used was the LUCID! It Works ONLY WHEN I delivered the ball at 2 miles per how!!
The ball does keep the pins extremely low when the velocity is at an snail roll! They are right on, at STORM!!
Jason,,, I wouldn’t worry about that pin flying over the top of the ten pin,,,, not when YOUR DOING 700 PLUS high games all the time now!!! LOL
You might be wondering how I threw the ball at two miles per hour? I use the child ramp that the ball slowly rolls down, and held it at the half way point on the ramp. When It was at the top of the ramp pins started to give the appearance of WANTING TO FLY over other pins, almost achieving their reckless behavior! But at the half way mark, PERFECT,,, NO unwanted flying pins!!!! LUCID,,, The Ball that does what IT SAYS!!

Michael, what your noticing is not the pins staying lower, because there is less force on the pins they move slower which causes them to drop more in the same amount of movement. this is why when a pro is going for a big split like the 7-10 they throw the ball at 25+mph, they want the pin the bounce off the back wall and come back before dropping to far to clear lane level

Everything is relative!

Ok

Ok, I taped it in HD, and watch the movie in Super Slow Motion! Guess what? The pins did not come off their base! When threw at 18.3 miles per hour, they looked like rockets going into space!! There is a perfect speed for STRIKE balls, spares will require more research! That perfect balance of speed in regards to the LUCID, and its ability to KEEP THE PINS,,,, super low…. Will require a little more research at my local AMF lanes! It’s not an illusion! Speed does effect altitude, Force is part of the equation related to speed!

Every Lucid comes with a disclamier in regards to pins staying low, and speed control! If It dosen't then maybe it should!
