What would cause this? My ball is fairly new about 3 weeks old.

Its caused by the way you release the ball. Have you changed anything lately?

If you are constantly coming over top of ball, you will track over thumb.

Oh man.. I've been having this problem for at least a month or two now.. trying to get it under control but no matter how much I try to get my hand under the ball on my starting stance it always feels like it doesn't change the release at all and it's still going over the thumb pretty good

It can be release related or a grip related issue, caused by the thumb staying in the ball much too long, too much grip pressure.

Also your fingers may be moving clockwise at the moment of release.Try to rotate the fingers in a counter clockwise movement from a 6:00 to 4:00 movement.

Thumb should be at one o'clock when it exits the ball and the fingers need to be at four o'clock (with thumb at eleven o'clock) when the fingers exit the ball. This release requires a counter clockwise rotation of the wrist during the release.

Also may be too much wrist cupping, Not enough wrist cock.

example of a cocked wrist that is not cupped.

If you have a football, toss it underhanded making sure you put a spiral on it. It will simulate throwing a bowling ball.

That would a Nerf football or mini football, not full size.

Though the newer softball drill would be better, the football drill if your not careful can cause you to come over the ball and throw the elbow out.

Were you tracking over the thumb with this ball previously? If so, it may have not been drilled to your style.

Not as much as my new ball. I did have my grip widened. it felt like i was squeezing my old ball, so i asked the driller to widen my grip. It feels way more comfortable in my stance and off my hand. It is only 1 track ring that goes over my thumb hole.

If this ball has been doing this since you got it then I believe the layout is off for your style but that's just my opinion.

That is what i thought also. I am just going to roll with it, since i have gotten it i have averaged 210 so i cant be doing too much wrong. Thanks.

off topic but is it okay to cock and cup your wrist at the same time? because thats what i've been doing for the past three or 4 weeks.

It certainly is. You may want to experiment with only doing one or the other to give you a variety of releases.
