Oops that should be "Going back to an up the back release"
Ok some history
I learned how to hook a bowling ball on the internet, and practiced it using Wii bowling lol.
When I finally tried it with a house ball and eventually my own ball I was coming around the ball chicken winging it so accuracy wasn't very good. One bowling teacher told me that you're not supposed to turn your wrist at all, and another told me to lift with my fingers. So I was pretty much stunted to a straight ball, up the back release for like a year. Then recently I finally learned how to turn the ball and hook it. So all good there. Now I'm doing research and seeing that pros are able to successfully use an up the back release, such as Chris Barnes, and still get the ball to hook using hand/finger adjustments (as opposed to the ball just going dead straight).
So just personal preference I'd like to go back to an up the back release. Will this cause any reduction in carry, or will it lose too much energy, or can I just make regular adjustments and move left and it'll be fine?
Does anyone here use an up the back release?
I feel things like the yoyo analogy or snap the wrist at release makes more sense with an up the back kind of release.

Watching the best of the best, like Chris Barnes, is what led me to learn how to bowl with the inside part of the ball. We will leave Tommy Jones' style of coming inside the ball to get those crazy revs due to him being in a class by himself in accomplishing that.
Chris Barnes is arguably the most versatile, cerebral bowler in the galaxy. Most instructional videos and publications say to have the fingers/hand/wrist rotate from 6 to 4 (or even 3). Players like Barnes actually start more along the lines of 7 or even 8 at times and end no further than 5. Players who have mastered this get awesome carry with great drive due to coming from behind the ball. They still rotate, albeit from a different start, 2-3 hours of position of a clock face. Am I making sense?
When I first started trying this I had to play far right. The more comfortable I got with it, the more I played around with it until eventually I could create plenty of hook to match lane conditions. I set my wrist at the start of my stance and do my best to keep my wrist locked until the release. Less hook needed, just start with the fingers closer to 6. More hook, closer to 9.

Notice how Chris retains his wrist cock at the bottom of the swing, even though he's unloading the wrist to remove the wrist cup.

That's the beauty of why I like his release. If I start around 7 or 8, my wrist has no CHOICE but to go to around 5:30 when I release the ball, as opposed to starting at 6 and turning to 3 at just the right moment.

It didn't show up. But does he uncock it? If not, wouldn't that send it going into a different spin, like a back up ball?

Right click and select show image in a new tab. I have to do that with most of Bowl's pics.

What a release. I am amazed at how he seems to some out of the top of the ball - like he is trying to lay the ball into the lane as early as he is able...almost like someone hitting a topspin forehand in tennis.

What's amazing but you can't see is his thumb is out of the ball after the fourth picture. The rest is pure finger and hand rotation.
