I am looking for some advice for my 10 year old. He is still throwing a plastic ball and i want to get him into a ball that hooks. What is a good entry level ball in the 10 pound variety? I am a storm guy through and through. Always have been, always will be. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

The Columbia Freeze is a nice ball. That one was mine and it taught me good. I think its cheaper than the Slingshot, not sure. Whatever the ball, he'll love it ha ha.

What weight is he using? Some companies vary the core to a generic below a certain weight (manufactures differ at what weight).

Right now he is using an 8 pound white dot.

do you think he can handle a bit more? at 8lb i doubt you will find a ball without a generic core as bill said. perhaps if you could get him up in weight more before worrying about hook.

He can most def throw a 10 lb ball, maybe an 11.

At that weight it's going to be hard to find a ball that doesn't have a pancake weight block. Brunswick uses the same core to 12 pounds. Storm uses different cores for 14-16 and 12 & 13. Let me do more research and see what I can find under 10 pounds.

In all seriousness, perhaps take him to the alley after school and get him using a 10-12lb house ball and see what he can handle without to much strain, a little struggle isn't the end of the world, when i first went from a 11lb plastic ball (could have been 10) to my 14lb rattler i could barely throw it(yes i was week at 12), but a few weeks later i was throwing great, and the ball lasted a lot longer because of it.

A properly fitted, finger tip grip ball compared to a house ball; house ball is usually 2 pounds less. A junky house ball may actually hurt his progress.

i was more thinking of using the house ball as an idea of what he can lift, yes a properly drilled ball will be way better, but simply having him pick up the different house balls will give an idea of what he can/can't handle

Take a look at a c300 Scout reactive. It has the same pancake weight at the white dot. Its a great ball to learn how to hook with and is usable for drier lanes later.

The pro shop here has a 10 lb slingshot and a 10 lb Tropical Breeze. Out of those 2 balls which one would be best?

It depends on which one.

There is only one type of slingshot I believe

They also have a hybrid Tropical Breeze

and a pearl Tropical Breeze

It looks like the Slingshot is a stronger hook ball.

Personally I would go with something stronger, IF, you know lanes will have fresh oil, such as

The cyclone uses the same core from10-16 pounds. My friends girlfriend just got one and is looks awesome and she has improved a lot. The slingshots are nice but the core doesn't start until 12 pounds.
