Yep, more ball questions for the group, this time I'm asking on behalf of my girlfriend.
My girlfriend has told me she wants to get a new ball and she wants one with a smaller and smoother back end reaction rather than a real strong or angular one. She is a stroker-style bowler with a ball speed (according to the machine at the alley) of about 14mph or so, and a low rev rate - lower than mine which is already low to begin with. I've shown her the ball reaction videos on bowlingball.com for both balls and she's not sure which one she should go with - she really likes the look of the Karma Pearl (she loves purple, it's her favorite color) but she wants to choose a ball based on how well it will knock down pins, not just how pretty it is. We do mostly open bowling now, but are looking at joining a league soon. Of these two, which ball would you recommend or is there not enough of a difference to really matter? I'm pretty sure I already know Bill's answer on this one... :)
Thanks everyone!

The DV* is supposed to give a strong and continuous back end while the Karma Pearl is supposed to give a more medium reaction. Just the same I would go with the Misfit. Everyone I know that owns one loves theirs.

I would say DV8 Misfit! The Karma Pearl if I recall is a urethane ball and best suited for dry lane conditions. Another good ball is the Slingshot or Cyclone!

The reckless showed great results, i didn't like the Misfit when I threw it. -_-
I didn't have the backend I wanted, and the Reckless does ( maybe sometimes a little too much) haha, but still I am now being able to control it by adding more speed.

What did you think I would say?
Dry lanes that are usually found during open bowling-the Karma Pearl
Oiled lanes like usually found during league play-the Misfit
Has she seen all the color possibilities with the Misfit and that it glows under the black lights?

K, with all the dv8 love around here did you really expect a different answer?
but i do think the misfit is the better ball, one of the left handed bowlers in my league has one and it looks great going down the lane with a lower rev rate

Heh, I figured you'd chime in and say DV8 with the rest of the Deviants (of which I am soon to be a proud member as well). She likes the look of the purple/yellow misfit so she'll likely go with that one but she wants to see one in person first.
We're usually in bed too early for the blacklight bowling, so how it looks under the black lights isn't a big concern. I'm leaning more towards the misfit for her because it should do well in both open and league conditions, but it's ultimately her choice. She throws it so straight anyway that I'm not sure the difference will be all that noticeable for her.

The Misfit would make an easy ball for her to learn a little hook with when she is ready

BTW, has she checked out any of the Storm Tropical Series balls??? These would be good choices as well...

Yeah I showed her those, but she says doesn't want a scented ball. Why do they do that anyway? It's not like a bowling ball will get funky smelling or anything. I don't get the whole fruity scent thing.

Legend has it the the wife of Storm's owner was bothered by the smell of the plastics used in making the balls on a tour of the plant. They added the scents to make her happy.

LOL, I wouldn't be a bit surprised! Happy wife, happy life they say. Unless you have one like my ex wife, then the saying is Divorce, happy girlfriend, happy life. ;)

OK, I got curious and googled. Here's the answer: (http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/columnist/hiestand/2004-05-27-hiestand-bowling_x.htm)
In bowling centers' pro shops, he says, the scent prompts shoppers to literally sniff out the product: "They'll ask, 'What's that smell?' Then they'll go over and pick up the ball, which they might have never noticed otherwise. That's why we do it."
And Chrisman didn't just stumble onto the idea. He went into ball manufacturing with a business plan for making bright, multi-colored balls and, eventually, scented ones whose aromas are meant to last at least a decade.
"I just had these visions in my head," he says. "Because I didn't really know if it could be done."
Three years ago, he rolled out his first fragrance. "The one with the best impact off the bat was grape," says Chrisman, who rotates scents in his product lineup. "We've had good luck with raspberry. One I really liked that didn't go over well was cinnamon apple."
Chrisman says he "used to read all the marketing research on fragrance" when he was in the cleaning product business. But now he sometimes uses "just instinct," which failed him when it came to making bowling balls smell like chocolate.
"I thought it would be great," he says. "And combined with the smell of the balls, it was like a big Tootsie Roll. I thought people could relate to that. But it didn't go over well."
So there you go, now you know.
