Hey guys and gals,

I've got a bit of an issue that has sidelined me from bowling for the past few months. I have a lump (which I assume is some sort of calcium deposit at this point) at the base of my thumb on my throwing hand. It is extremely sore, especially when I bowl. I've taken the past few months off to see if it will go away or get better and it hasn't.

I've had some problems in the past with my thumb...I had a tendency to "pinch" the ball and resulted in my ripping the skin of the back of my thumb. After realizing that "toughing it out" wasn't working, I had some modifications done to my ball. Then, I started getting the lump at the base of my thumb, and the tip of my thumb would go numb after bowling 3 or so games. So I got the ball fixed again, but the lump is still there and has not gone away and is still sore. Like I've said, I've taken the past few months off from bowling seeing if it would get better and it hasn't.

I'm about to schedule an appointment with the doctor to get it looked at and see what the possible treatment would be.

Has anyone had problems with this, and if so what was the treatment? I'm pretty much in the dark when it comes to treatments like this, so would it be something they could give me a pill to dissolve it, or would they have to actually remove it? I know the treatment wouldn't be anything serious, but I'm just curious what I'm looking at here.

Any advice is appreciated!

Even if somebody has had this problem, see your doctor. It would be a shame if in reality the problems and treatment were different and you caused serious problems by waiting any longer.

I would have to agree with bill, seeing a doctor is the best option, i do have a bit of a bump on my thumb, but i think it's swelling and a bit of a callus, doesn't hurt so not worried.

The pain after so long of not bowling is what has me really concerned. Even a cyst is usually not painful.

Sounds like you busted a blood vessel resulting in a ganglion cyst. I had same thing in middle of wrist joint from bowling and had it surgically removed and have not had problem since. Seeing a doctor is very important espcially with numbing. A cyst is painful if it is in the joint!
