I hope this is the right forum for this question.

I bowl at a house that has been oiling to 44'. Now they have started buffing it another 2' to 46'. These are wood lanes. I am a Tweener I guess you'd say. I have no idea what my ball speed/RPM is. I'd say medium speed I guess, but I can speed up or slow down. My normal shot on the 44' is 15 to 10.

What would the recommendations be for where to play and the ball type to use? I have a sanded 1000, polished 1500, matte 4000, and polished 4000. I also have a matte old school Blue Hammer that I can still use.

My thought is to play the polished balls with a straighter shot a la Walter Ray, but I'd like some advice. Am I on track at all?

The 4000 polished would be fine for that line. The 1500 polished would be ok from 20 to 15. The matte 4000 you would have to be pretty far left, at least 25 or 30 lay down. As the saying goes; straighter is greater. These suggestions are solely based on what has worked for me on our wood lanes. As I'm sure you know, each piece of wood can absorb the oil at different rates. Wood has more friction but the constant wet-dry conditions seem to offset this advantage, in my opinion. I average a lot higher on synthetic lanes. How about you?

Somewhat amazingly I've never had the opportunity to bowl on synthetic. I came back to bowling after a 10 year hiatus. I still struggle with adjusting and probably mess around too much with my release, usually I'm just trying to find something that works consistently.

Try thowing your ball over the 13 board(44-31=13)and sand the ball to about 2000-3000. You will also need to move about 1' forward and slow your approach and armswing down to allow the ball to genrate friction,so when it hits the dry it will hook.
