O’Neill and Johnson Hold Strong to Finish Atop Qualifying
at Chameleon Championship
Top 32 men and top 10 women advance to Friday’s match play

TAYLOR, MICH. (November 13, 2008) — Bill O’ Neill of Southampton, Pa. and Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., who each led block one, continued their dominance in Thursday’s qualifying of the Chameleon Championship at Taylor Lanes, the fourth stop on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour.

O’Neill who led the 64-player field with 1,689 pins after seven games, remained consistent during the second block, finishing with 3,290 to lead after the 14 games. O’Neill led Michael Machuga by 34 pins after the first block, and ended up finishing 34 pins ahead of Machuga after the 14 games.

“I pretty much went out there and did the same thing,” O’Neill said. “I used the same two balls, changing to the second ball at almost the exact same time, and fortunately I was able to keep bowling well and continued to get some breaks.”

“As far as tomorrow, I’m going to forget everything that happened today,” O’Neill added. “If my ball reaction isn’t here, I’m not going to panic. I’m going to expect something totally different (with the match play).”

Lone amateur Dan MacLelland of Windsor, Ontario and Saginaw Valley State, also advanced to Friday’s round-robin match-play, finishing in 12th with 3,055 pins.

Also of note, Chris Loschetter picked up the rare 4-6-7-10 split during the second block and Dino Castillo shot a 300 in Thursday’s first block, both advancing to Friday’s play. The top 32 men and top 10 women advanced.

Johnson, who had established a 92 point lead after the first block over the 16-player field, wasn’t exactly thrilled with her second block performance but managed to hang on. Johnson finished with 2,906 pins, ahead of Jodi Woessner of Oregon, Ohio with 2,858.

“I had a really good morning and made a lot of good shots but I was struggling tonight,” Johnson said. “I just tried to grind out my shot. Luckily the scores were low, I was grinding some out in the 190s, so I think that was the biggest factor.”

“Tomorrow I hope to bowl like I did this morning,” she added. “I know the breakdown (of the lanes) will be different bowling with the women, the shot won’t be all over the place like it was today. I just want to play smart out there and not make too many mistakes.”

Johnson is an alternate to the Women’s Series exempt field and was given the opportunity to compete in this event, as was Olivia Sandham, due to Shannon Pluhowsky’s and Shannon O’Keefe’s absence in this event. Johnson competed regularly in the 2007 Women’s Series.

Friday’s men’s competition continues with nine games of round-robin match play beginning at 11 a.m. cutting the field to the top 16. The remaining 16 will return at 6 p.m. for nine more games of round-robin match play, to decide the final four. The women’s field will return at 6 p.m. for nine games of round-robin match play, until the final two are decided. The four men and two women will advance to Sunday’s live televised finals on ESPN at 1 p.m. ET.
