On short, dry patterns, I always thought people would use polished balls to go longer.. but some sites say on Cheetah, they actually sand the ball so it loses energy and doesn't snap as much at the end. So can anyone clarify one who do either?

Cheetah pattern is I believe 35' oil pattern. A polished ball does have a snap on a dry backend. A dull ball will not snap as much, but, you also have to take into consideration how the ball is drilled as well as what surface finish your using. I have used both polished and dull and I prefer polished.

Style has an effect also. Guys with big rev rates like Belmo, Sean Rash or Tommy Jones wouldn't be able to keep a polished OOB ball on the lanes. Norm Duke wouldn't need to use a sanded ball on that type of pattern. I love Norm but he doesn't have a snapping hook to worry about it on a short or dry pattern.

Norm Duke's style and delivery just looks like perfection to me. It's so fluid and graceful! I feel like a lumbering goober throwing a ball after I watch that guy.

A lot Depends on who is rolling the ball and what layout and ball they are using. As to which would match up best for them.

By sanding the ball they are evening out the reaction.

When I play on Cheetah I use a Pearl Particle ball with about 1500 grit lightly Polished surface.

Remember:
A sanded ball hooks less, but hooks earlier than a smooth ball.
A smooth ball hooks more, but hooks later than a sanded ball.
