Hi, I am looking into getting a new ball coming up soon and was wondering which way I should get it drilled. I have always had my ball drilled the conventional way, but have been wondering if I should try it using a fingertip style. I am a stroker in my bowling style. What do you all suggest? Plus I am looking at getting either the Karma Pearl or the DV8 Misfit. Any suggestions or recommendations regarding this as well would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

I would suggest fingertip as this will give you better angle to pocket. I would suggest Slingshot(1st choice) or karma as the misfit might be to much hook. Also make sure you take couple lessons to properly learn how to use a fingertip,so you don't develop bad habits. Keep your old ball(If you have 1)and use it as your spare ball.

Much success with your new ball!

fingertip is the way to go, The fingertip gips feel so much better on your fingers. You just want to make sure they fit properly not too big and not too small. Found out my old ball fingertips are way too big, and my new ball has them perfect smaller and the fits is so much better. using fingertip also allows you to not worry about getting your fingers stuck in the ball and you limit down the excuses to just your thumb.

Yes, go for fingertip. It takes a while to get used to, but when you get it down it is so worth it. My chick started bowling with fingertips 3 months ago, and it works much better for her.

Karma pearl!! If its anything like the Damage also by brunswick it'll be a really awesome ball. Misfit is much harder to control for me.

Fingertip.. That's how you get hook. It won't bother you..

Thank you all very much for your input. I can't wait to try using a fingertip grip. I was already contemplating the use of a fingertip ball, but now I feel more at ease about doing it. I know that it will take a little while to get used to it, but I am up for a challenge. :)

You are such a snot love, LOL :) I know what you told me, but I wanted to get some other opinions too, especially since fingertip is the only way you bowl and don't use a conventional style ball. LOL :p

Well it all depends, do you want to hook the ball? a conventional grip normally limits you to a straight ball, if this is how you want to play then go conventional, going to a fingertip ball on the other hand will let you hook which allows you to have a more optimal entry angle into the pocket, which will result in more consistent strikes (assuming you hit the pocket)

Personally i think you should go with the finger tip ball, it won't be easy when you first try it, but once you get used to it your average should rise.

As for the ball, what happened to purple? lol (pink isn't purple)

Misfit is what i would pick :D

or, the slingshot does come in purple and is a great ball to learn to hook with

I would like to have more of a hook rather than a straight ball, so that is why I was thinking about the fingertips being drilled into the new ball I get. The ball I have now has a very slight curve, if I can get it to do it that is, but I want more of a back-end curve when rolling the ball.

I like both the Karma and the Misfit, and eventually would like to get both of them.

The Karma has a little bit of purplish color to it, LOL ;)

Iremember when I got my first fingertip ball. The employee at the pro shop told me to put my fingers into the ball and then put the ball in my palm with the fingers at the top. After I did that he put his palm under mine and told me to take my palm from under the ball. When I did that the ball stayed on my fingers without squeezing. He told me that a lot of people think the ball will fall off the fingers when you do that. But because of the span between the thumb and the fingers friction holds the ball on. You don't have to worry about the ball getting stuck to your hand because at release the thumb will slide out first then the fingers put revs on the ball. Since this is your first fingertip ball before you do your approach pre-set your hand with a straight wrist and then turn your hand so the palm is facing a little toward you.As you make your swing make sure your hand stays in this position all the way through the release. Plus don't let your fingertips straighten out to release the ball. You want to leave them hooked like they are when in the ball. The weight of the ball will pull it offof your fingers and in turn put revs on the ball for a hook. The more you face your palm towards you the more revs. You don't want to go past the handshake position though. Any further and your hand will be going towards the top of the ball and that is a no no. It sounds like a pain but it really isn't once you get use to it. Good luck and have fun. THE END. LOL.

Stroker but at what speed? Are you throwing straight now as one would expect with a conventional drilling?

Assuming (I hate doping this) that your ball is at least 14 pounds, speed of at least 12 mph with a below average rev rate and will learn to throw with the needed tilt and rotation.....the Karma Pearl. It will move a few boards and be very controllable. The Misfit, if drilled to go longer (80 X 4 X 40) will give a good read and good backend. However, that ball will be harder to learn to hook and control with. So I suggest the Karma first then the Misfit later. Your fabulous boyfriend can get you the Misfit for Valentine's Day.

Oh and fingertip grip. All day, every day as soon as you can. The benefits far, far, far out weigh the odd feeling when you first try them. Just remember, don't squeeze with your thumb with them as you do with a conventional drilling or it will tear your thumb up and kill the ball's reaction.

About three years ago I got my first ball and the pro didn't say anything about fingertip, etc. so he drilled it with conventions holes. I got it changed within a couple of months and the difference was great. I'd never recommend conventional...unless physically unable for some reason.

As with most things in life and bowling, I go against conventional wisdom. I've taken brand new, never rolled a ball before bowlers and put them in finger tip grips. Why? With so much to learn and get use to anyway, why not? Why create another thing to learn to use later when that can be avoided altogether? The purpose of conventional is to fit more bowlers with a house ball. That's it.

Zothen

Should you take Zothen's advice, (and I would take it ), You might want to have your old ball plugged and re-drilled fingertip so that both balls will have the same feel. I did use a conventionally drilled ball as a spare ball after going to a fingertip grip for about a season before getting a fingertip plastic ball.

Fingertip. From my expierence it is really hard to hook a ball with a conventional grip.

Conventionally drilled balls are not meant to hook, there meant to be useable without a perfect fit (house balls) that being said, you can make any ball hook if you try hard enough lol getting a ball with a core drilled conventionally is a waste, your taking a ball that's meant to hook and removing a lot of its hook potential

Yes, she throws it straight now, with just a little bit of hook on the back. Speed is about 14mph and her current ball is a 16 pound Columbia, which is too heavy for her now due to her back problems, so I suggested going to a 14 for her new ball.

It's a deal. Of course I'll have to get some other things besides that for Valentines Day, as I'm sure her idea of a romantic evening does not include league night at the local bowling center. :D

Yeah, I remember my first fingertip ball - I was loving the fact that I could rev the hell out of it and swing from coast to coast all over the lane, but I had no idea what I was doing when I had it drilled nor did I know how to properly throw it and I tore up my hand pretty good the first few times I used it. Pain is a good teacher though - it is nature's way of saying "you're doing it wrong". Unfortunately I also built up about 10 years of bad bowling habits with that first ball that I'm just now starting to "unlearn".

Thanks for all the advice for my wonderful GF everyone! She told me last night she wants to get good enough to do the ABT with me next year - I'm tellin' ya, she's a keeper! :D

My wife hardly ever bowls, but when she does she is very consistent. She is a 130's average bowler who bowls maybe 2-3 times a year. I would love ot see what she could do with actually bowling regularly. She is also a lefty that bowls down and in. with very little hook. Wish her work schedule allowed for her to bowl more often, I think she could easily pick up 20-30 pins. And AZBowla you have a keeper, now just to hope she doesn't get better than you and starts giving you pointers. ;)

Ha, too late, she already does that, but that's because she has been professionally coached before and was part of a competitive team in high school. She knows what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong better than I do. I often ask her for advice to help me improve my game. I think the only thing keeping her from being "better" than me right now are some lingering back problems and the fact that she's throwing an old ball that's no longer right for her. When I get her that Karma Pearl, she's going to probably start kicking my butt out there, lol!

I don't think she'd want to wear spandex, but I could see her wearing a purple bowling shirt with her name on the back when we bowl. As for the purple hair, she does look very good with a deep burgundy color, so in a way she's already done that. :)

I have to say thank you all for all the advice and especially the laughs. I can't stop laughing while reading all the posts that you have posted on here. I love all the purple ideas and suggestions that were given. I think that I will go ahead and start off with the Karma Pearl and work my way up to the Misfit. I will go ahead and do the fingertip grip as well. I know that it will take a little while for me to get used to, but I believe that I will like it much better just like you all said. :)

I really don't think that I will get the purple jumpsuit. That makes me think of The Big Lebowski too much. ;) I am not one to lick my bowling ball. The purple Corvette sounds great, but I like the one that my boyfriend picked out better. LOL He sure does know me to a tee. ;)

When you get the tips, get a color that stands out. It will make seeing the rotation easier which will come in handy later when you're ready to learn how to read what the ball is doing.
