View Full Version : Who's your favorite pro bowler?

It doesn't have to be who you personally like the most, it can be who's your favorite pro bowler at this or that. Like for me, Walter Ray is my hero. I must say that he wasn't my favorite until I discovered his home alley was within driving distance from my house. I've been in there numerous times, but never got to see him personally. I have talked to a few people about him though, like he's a real nice guy who carries around a bunch of pictures and a sharpie to sign for people. For me, my pro shop operator was kind enough to have walter sign my 16 pound ball that's sitting on my shelf at home. I was going to let a bowling ally display the ball, but my mom wouldn't have it. I payed for the ball, but my mom doesn't ask much of me, and when she asks something I just oblige. Walter doesn't have my favorite bowling style though. I'm not so sure who my favorite is, but I like certain things about each pro bowler. Like for Chris Barnes I like his mental game, and how he executes that game. I like the look of Tommy Jones physical game, I even tried to emulate his style when I first began bowling without success and later realized that I do better with a low back swing. Anyhow, for those not mentioned, there is just something about each bowler that interesting.

Physical game, I think PDW and PBIII are tops but my favorites to root for are Rhino Page and Ryan Shafer (Ryan being someone I used to bowl with in Elmira Heights, NY).

Mike Fagan because of how smooth he is...Sean Rash because he came from Alaska! And lastly, Osku Palermaa just because of his physical game... especially that one handed straight ball he does... lol!

Exactly! LOL! Now sit still when I'm on my approach! How hard is that to do?! Don't make me come over there....
Then of course there's also Mr. "Take that ya bottle b****" Rash. He's fun to watch sometimes too.

Fagan is so weird looking when he bowls, but it's damned effective, I'll give him that. He's also a very nice guy who takes time to answer other bowler's questions on his website. I don't think I could ever adopt such a high backswing though, how the heck does he do that without dropping the ball on his head?!

I can push my ball up like that but whenever I see people push their ball way up high, like can mclelleland, it looks weird. Not a fan of people who muscle the ball after learning so much about having a free armswing.
His (fagan) does seem more fluid though.

Well he's still pretty young. If he's still reaching up almost vertical with his backswing when he's 50 then I'll be impressed. As for me, these 41 year old shoulders are doing well if I can get my arm parallel with the floor in my backswing. For me, that's really all the higher it needs to go anyway. Feels weird to me if I try to go higher than that, plus it throws my timing off.

Why not Fagan? Though his backswing is high, his physical game is among the best in bowling. His swing is the epitome of a free arm swing, and he creates 500+ revs using virtually no effort (he is THE bowler to watch in regards to keeping your wrist in a strong position before release). His timing and knee continuation are excellent.
More importantly, he performs well on all conditions and can play any line he needs to. Whats not to like? I'd kill to have his game.

Rhino Page. I don't know why but I just like him. Wes Malott. He is a nice guy and even showed a friend the proper way to tape his fingers and he showed me. WRWJr and Duke. Two of the all-time best that do what they can to promote the sport. Sean Rash. Why? His physical game is great and his mental game sucks. Always one bad throw from an implosion. Chris Barnes. Simply the most versatile.
Stephanie Nation and Shannon O'Keefe. They have both been helpful in the past, especially when I had question regarding techniques that may or may not work for coaching females. Shannon didn't just write an e-mail back, her and her husband attached videos showing exactly what they were trying to explain to ensure I had no confusion.

I don't like rash at all. In one of his interviews he said that he does everything he can to distract his opponents. He also shouldn't have got player of the year. He had most pins and earnings. But that's not what they emphasize on who is the greatest player for the hall of fame. They go by titles won, which Belmo had, also Belmo was more feared among the pros. I think Belmo didn't get player of the year because he is from Australia, and if Rash didn't get it this year he probably wouldn't get it for another 5. Rash is a great player, but he is to shady.

Before he passed away it was Earl Anthony. Not only was he a great bowler but he was a lefty like me. His swing always looked effortless. The guy I like now is Norm Duke because he is a good bowler and seems to be a personable guy. Plus he is a good representative for us little guys like me. He is like David the Goliath killer. He had
his share of knocking off some big guys.

Brian Voss. I was able to attend a clinic years ago in high school and he was one of the pro instructors there. Months later I saw him at the state tournament and he came over saying how great it was that I corrected the things pointed out at the clinic and then proceeded to name them and even remembered my name. So either he tells everyone to fix the same stuff and asked someone my name or he really has that good a memory. Either way, he made a heck of an impression with his tutoring and patience.

There are just way too many too choose from over the years I've been a fan. Right now my favorite is Mike Machuga, with Fagan and Cimminnelli being tops among the rest of the bowlers that I like to root for.
