Been bowling for about 3 months, got a ball, got shoes. I bowl about 15-20 games a week. I just bowled a 244 the other day, followed by a 221. I've got 8 plus 200 games and 615 series. Not trying to be cocky, but my friends who come bowl with me, started when i did and haven't cracked 175. Did I just improve really fast? Or are they getting good too slow? I guess I'm asking how long it took you before you got big scores and knew you were getting very good.

Welcome aboard. Sounds like you are doing quite well. When I started bowling seriously (got a ball and shoes) about 10 years ago, I picked it up really fast too with high numbers like that, but never really bowled in a league or anything serious. I just recently got back into it again. I bowled a 254 the other day practicing, but my league avg this year is 159. Bowling good scores practicing is a lot easier than doing it in a league setting or a tournament. So as far as your scores, sounds like you know how to throw a ball well, but doing it when it counts is a key.
For your friends, sounds like they just need to find a groove and get more consistent. I would be they aren't converting spares as well as you are. Spares=Better Scores, so I would tell them to focus on that first and foremost.

i think it depends on how much you know and if you share what you know and the type of bowler you are and the type you are depends on how consistent you can be and how inconsistent they can be how many spare u pick up and how many they miss how lucky u may have been and how unlucky u have been just my theory alot of things come into play

Thanks, and Very true! They have a lot of trouble converting spares. One of my friends refuses to take any spin off the ball when going at the 10 pin. And they won't listen to my advice about moving feet 3-6-9 boards for different spares. After my 244, they started listening a little bit more tho. lol... I just don't want them to get too frustrated and quit on me. Also, they don't like aiming at arrows and adjusting feet to find the pocket. They just look at the pins and change aiming. Maybe they are just too stubborn to listen to their friend who has been bowling just as long as they have. They think I'm being cocky trying to coach them, but really I'd love for them to get big scores. Maybe they have to figure it out on their own tho.

Good idea! Get them on here. I have been on here for a few weeks and watching coaching videos online. The truth is, that is why I got better faster. I did my homework, they just watched a few vids on spin. I try to tell them about what I've been learning, but it's not easy to give pointers/tips when you are a beginner as well.

Did your friends buy new balls also or are they using house balls? That would be a big reason as to why your scores are so much higher.

It depends on your technique. Not what technique but if you're doing it consistently. I got like a 187 when I was new and I never counted it because it was all luck.

So if you got 12 brooklyn strikes in a game you wouldn't count it because they weren't in the pocket? Bowling is luck sometimes when it comes to pin carry. People can smash the pocket all day and leave solid 10 pins. The next shot they can come up a little lite or high on the head pin and carry.

Heh. I've been bowling for 30 years and I've never cracked 240, so I'd say you're going really fast. :) Welcome to the site!

I think it would drive me nuts but I would still count it. I have good enough technique now but brooklyns are basically like a happy accident. Good technique gives some accident forgiveness.

Part of is that I have a medium spin cyclone, and my friend has a heavier spin ball (think its called 508 or something). I find my ball easier to control. His strikes hit brooklyn a lot. I tell him to move his feet left, but he's stubborn, wants to figure it out on his own.

I don't think it's stubborn so much as it feels like a puzzle. When you have other people finish a puzzle for you it's not as fun.

Welcome to the boards!
Were these scores practice or league? You may be a rare bowling prodigy! Sounds like your ready for a scratch(No handicap)league.

Luck=when proper preparation allows a minor execution flaw to still provide a positive result.
Your friends view you as a peer and that's fine. They don't yet view you as the guru with the answers. You've done your homework and have obviously practiced. Enjoy the fruits of your labor. When you're feeling real confident, join a league and you will regain humility.

Great start at bowling, many never reach you're scoring levels. I do agree that spare conversion is key
