Plastic bottles are used in place of bowling pins by Ugandan children.
Far away from the roar of pin-setting machines and thunder of bowling balls crashing into pins, bowling is starting to slowly develop a following in the African country of Uganda, and The Bowling Foundation is ready to help accelerate the process.

After learning of children taking up the sport of bowling by using tattered soccer balls as bowling balls and old plastic bottles as pins, The Bowling Foundation is arranging to send mobile bowling lanes and equipment to a village in Uganda, a land-locked country in central Africa.

Adam Williams, co-founder of Enlighten Africa, initially helped the children arrange the pins in the form of traditional bowling. His organization is dedicated to help people in Uganda meet their most basic needs while enhancing their quality of life in affordable and sustainable ways.

"I can't remember seeing a group of kids more excited about having a new game to play," Williams said. "The beauty of tenpin bowling conditions like these is that it can be played equally by both boys and girls."

Williams said bowling has not only led to a physical activity for the children, but also has allowed them to practice their basic math skills as they are learning to keep score on a chalkboard.

Soon the children will receive an upgrade in their bowling facilities when the equipment arrives from The Bowling Foundation.

"While we love to promote the sport of bowling, the real benefit here is providing some new, athletic, healthy, social and educational opportunities for youth in a struggling third world country of Africa," The Bowling Foundation Executive Director Troy Greisen said.

The bowling kits include a 30-foot carpet lane, a set of plastic pins and rubber bowling balls. The same kits are used to teach bowling in schools and are also sent to American troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan for recreation through the Bowl For Veterans program.
