Went to bowl in a new location today and found out the spots behind the foul line are not the same distance from the foul line at every center. Never had thought about it and assumed it was universal. Totally screwed up my game. I wonder why this is the case as it would seem they would be alike. Live and learn...never assume anything.

I use them as a guide as far as where to line up in front of the pins, but I don't rely on them for distance from the foul line as that can vary (as you discovered). I've found they're in the general vicinity of where I start my approach from though so as long as the difference between centers isn't huge, it doesn't mess me up too bad if I stand on them. So long as I'm not crossing the foul line (I have a long approach) then it's all good.

I agree that one would think the distance would be the same but there is a variance. A rather large variance in my opinion but once you know you can adjust as needed.

The places I've bowled have always had only 5 dots in each row on the approach. Last year I bowled in a center that had 7 per row. Since I normally count from the outermost arrow in, when I got set on the approach it just felt off and then I noticed the extra dots.

Yea, that could explain my quicker steps at my practice lanes and faster throwing speed.
