Welcome to the boards! (Ignore the spam, they're working on it...)

To answer your question, a balance hole will only take out a tiny bit of weight - certainly not enough to be noticeable. A balance hole is more for changing how the ball travels down the lane than it is for removing weight.

Best advice I can give is if it hasn't been drilled yet, see if the pro shop will let him trade it for the same ball with the right weight before drilling. They just might do it seeing as how you're there to get the ball drilled anyway and they are making some money from you regardless. If not, then as long as it's drilled correctly for your Uncle, he should still be able to throw it. I went from a 14 to a 15 with my new ball and it felt a bit heavy at first but I got used to it pretty quickly. Who knows, a heavier ball might be just the thing he needs to make those spares. :D

The only way to get 14lbs is to buy a 14lbs ball!

Steven 408, undrilled/unused you shouldn't have a problem returning it for the 14lb, or as AZ says, take to the proshop and can't imagine they wouldn't trade straight up for the same ball.
