Hey guys
I joined my first bowling league about 3 months ago and ive been getting really into bowling. I started off with the house balls then found my dads old AMF Ultra Angle and Regular angle balls from when he used to bowl in the 80's and have been using those for about 2 months. Theyre both drilled for left hand and i am right handed but it hasnt been a huge deal although a ball drilled for me would be much better. With that being said im looking to purchase a new modern age ball. I cant give you guys exact numbers but i throw a two finger hook ball with higher speed and moderate revs and the lanes are usually medium to medium heavy oil. I usually throw it 2 arrows in on the right side of the lane straight and it just slightly hooks into the pocket. My highest game was a 169 with about a 130 avg. Looking for suggestions and i will also be asking the owner of the bowling shop i plan on going to as he is supposedly highly knowledgeable. Thanks in advance bros

Any ball drilled for your hand is gonna improve your game. With that being said you could look into one of the entry level balls ie. brunswick slingshot.

that seems to be a favorite among some of my fellow league bowlers. Will look into it

well a ball then you should look into some of the DV8 lineup like the misfit (entry lvl) or the reckless(mid performace) and if you want soemthing that will hook then you can look at the hell raiser series.

id say the misfit is above entry level but DV8 has only good things coming from it so i would for sure go with that
DV8
Hammer
are my preferred company's
the slingshot is a great start ball

I have a Slingshot and it is really nice rolling ball! Karma solid or pearl will also work for you.

You might also want to look into the Storm Tropical Breeze line. These are very good as well...

Can i ask the major difference between say and entry ball and a high performance ball? Im gonna assume control-ability?

high performance balls tend to be the stronger balls for heavier oil and cost more.
entry level balls tend to be for lower volumes of oil. (But there exceptions some can be quite strong) and cost less.

so since my bowling alley usually has medium to medium heavy oil, would that mean i should look into more mid grade balls vs an entry ball?

Im not nearly as avid a bowler as most here and just a few short weeks ago I too was looking for advice, I bowl in a couple different houses, it took me a couple weeks to adjust to my league house but I finally found the right groove, and my scores have improved greatly. I went with a DV8 Misfit, which came highly recommended, this ball has worked everywhere I've thrown it, trust me, dont let the term "Entry Level" DV8 gives to this ball fool you, its far from it and hits as hard as the big boys do. You wont be dissatisfied.
I bowl with a guy in my league that consecutively rolls over 200, I let him throw it a couple times, he called his shop from the lanes and ordered one. This ball truly kicks zzz,

You certainly can't beat the price for that ball! $70 shipped is a STEAL. I wish I could do it this week, but the rent gobbles up most of my paycheck at the beginning of the month. :(
If you do go for a new ball, I recommend the DV8 Marauder or Marauder Madness. Not only is it a very versatile ball (dare I say a benchmark ball even) but owning one will also give you an exclusive membership in our little Bowling Boards DV8 Marauder's Club (http://www.bowlingboards.com/group.php?groupid=14) if you wish, lol... There's not much in there yet, but I will be adding pictures of my Marauder and a ball reaction video soon. I'm sure the other folks in there will be posting things about their new toys soon. :) I love the DV8 Marauder and highly recommend it!

would that DV8 Hellraiser Revenge be a bit too aggressive on medium oil?

after some more researching, it looks like a marauder, reckless or misfit would be better. Anyone selling one? lol

Go with the Marauder with a 80 X 4 X 60 layout

May i ask what that layout means?
billf

Given what you gave as a style and where you like to play, that layout will go fairly long down lane, rev up and flare easy and have a strong back end reaction with a nice arcing hook.
80* drill angle, pin to PAP of 4", 60* VAL angle.

Makes sense. Thank you for clarifying it Bill

Any entry level bowling ball would be good, From brunswick maybe a slingshot, What i have been seeing alot of is the Ebonite Cyclone, Pretty much the cheapest ball on the market for the level of performance it produces. Tropical breeze hybrid from strom is another good one, if your looking for alot of hook the storm crossroad, there are many many balls out there, pretty much any new ball will raise your average. but dont go out and buy the most expensive most high performance ball just yet. learn with something cheaper then when you are good switch to something a little more high performance.

One word of advice: I used to bowl with the "two finger," method. When you get your ball, and you have it drilled, make sure you really talk to your driller about the thumb hole. Explain that you currently only use two fingers, and talk to them about why you only use two fingers. My pro shop professional was able to address some of my concerns and switched me to fingertips, and also position the thumb hole just slightly closer to my middle finger so it would release easier.
It took months for me to get back up to where my average was, but once I got used to the 3 hole technique I have never been more consistent. I'm the stubborn type, and I had a 170 average with my two finger system. I loved the hook I got out of it. I now carry a 185 average and it's STILL on the rise (I had been out of league bowling for a couple years, and I'm still improving as I'm getting back into the swing of things).
Make your transition easy. Go ahead and keep your two finger system. Just keep an open mind about learning to use all 3 fingers gradually and you'll be happy you did!

yea im very open to the 3 finger method as i made another thread about it and basically i was told that 3 finger will lead to better accuracy and consistency. The reason ive been doing 2 finger is because the ball i currently have is my dads ball, so its a left handed ball whereas im right handed thus the holes dont fit properly. I have an upcoming league that i will probably bowl 2 fingered but during practice i will be working on 3 finger as well as other mechanics like my approach and swing

I'm glad to hear that. I'm a firm believer that IT DOESN'T MATTER!!! Listen... If the difference between going to 3 fingers ruins the fun you have in the sport, then stay with 2 fingers. Don't hurt your ability to have fun and enjoy it. BUT, I'm one of those types that wants to be as good as possible, and using 3 fingers increases the point of contact and I believe it has made a HUGE difference in my game.

well i want to be better while still having fun. I dont take league super serious but i still like to do my part on the team to help with the win. There are some guys in the league that get mad if their strike isnt pretty which i think is stupid. I usually have a couple beers and just have some fun bowling.

My second game this past Monday was funny (to me). It went like this 6/ X 9/ X X X X X X XXX=270
The ball was too strong and my thumb had swelled so it was sticking. I wasn't changing a thing until I missed. The only pocket shots were the 1st and 3rd frames. The rest were Brooklyn or plain garbage. My opponent was furious. I missed the first throw of game 3 and changed balls and thumb inserts and was creaming the pocket. I just looked at him and said, "See Dennis, I can hit the pocket when I want to but either way I will beat you again." That game was only a 265 (I think). Strikes are strikes, there are no bonuses for how good they look.

Thats funny. My teammates are novices like myself so we have a higher handicap than most teams and some of the better teams seriously get mad about it but were not in a competitive league, just a bunch of random fairly average bowlers. i was actually watching quite a bit of dick weber championship matches with the intention of seeing about how my old AMF Angle ball should hook and his strikes were never perfect either, he just had good precise throwing and that got the job done.
