I printed out the DV8 drilling layout information to take to the pro shop on Saturday with me.

Assuming that the guy doing the drilling doesn't know, how do I know which layout to use?

My style I guess would be a Tweener to Stroker. Medium rev's I suppose.

I throw my Hammer Blue (Urethane) outside the 2nd arrow, makes it's turn closer to the pins.

Tomorrow I'll see if I can post a pic of the way it's drilled currently.

He already has their layouts, he is questioning which one to use I believe. And as the others said, it depends on what you are looking for in the reaction. Are you looking for it to go longer and break later or roll sooner? Looking for something to use in heavier oil or lighter conditions? There are a lot of factors to consider.

I am going to buy a new ball soon(probably be the same ball you just bought) and I have been pondering the same thing you are. My plan is to have my driller watch me throw and go from there.

well i can say this if you want a agressive and early roll ball then i can post a picture of my Hell Rasier Revenge i got the layout for it out of the brunswick layouts the one that is maximum hook/arc and it works great at most bowling allies where i have to stand far left and at the bowling allie i play at i have to stand far right because more oil on the lanes and much different.

See if you can get the driller to watch you bowl. More than likely he will be able to match your game to a layout. Telling them to just drill it a certain way can make it an unpleasant experience as it may not do what you want. If you can't have them watch you, the best would be to tell him exactly how you bowl. Like what line you bowl, ball speed and what you want to accomplish.

I'm going to talk to the pro shop guy and see if he will watch me throw my Hammer before we drill my DV8. I'm just trying to get an understanding of what each layout is for and which I can expect to end up using. :)

I've asked a few of those in-the-know that I know and the house where I will end up league bowling can be varied as far as oil. One week it could be heavy, the next could be light. They said you usually won't find out until you start throwing a few practice shots.

The way I see my DV8 shot in my mind is with a late breaking hard backend? Does that make sense?

Somewhat similar (the ball action) to this video but RIGHTHANDED:

Do this. This way the pro shop can have an idea of how you throw the ball, plus he will be able to acquire your pap and drill it properly for the type of roll you are looking for.

Sounds like you want it to go long (pin up above the fingers). Don't put too much faith in having a huge backend as you will find out it is not as great as it sounds. Your better off with more of an arc than trying to do the hockey stick!

Watch this video, I love listening to this guy as he says some funny things, but he knows his stuff. The part you want to really watch is from about 5:30 through to the end. This will talk about the hockey stick angle and why you want to more more angular.

The layout alone will not let two bowlers have the same reaction. Release, speed, revs, PAP, tilt and rotation all affect how it will react. That's why I usually only post suggested layouts (dual angle=more accurate) after seeing a video and even then it's not as good as in person.

I had the ball drilled on Saturday while I had the kids there for their morning league. I talked with the pro shop guy, I explained to him how I throw my Hammer Blue and what I am hoping to get out of this ball. He took some measurements off my Hammer for the hole spacings and checked my hand in the grip and we made an adjustment to one hole. He checked the ball layout, I gave him the print out of the drill patterns from DV8, he looked them over and then started drawing lines on the ball. He then put the ball in the scale and checked to make sure it was legal and check the top weight (?).

After all that he drilled it, put the finger grips in and then checked the thumbhole and made adjustments to it's size.

I'll tell ya, I have yet to throw the ball (didn't have time as I had to drop the kids off to their mother and a lot of stuff to get done that day) but it feels like no other ball I've held and swung. The adjustment to the middle finger hole distance (1/16" shorter than the Hammer) makes it so that I'm not feeling like I need to squeeze the ball to keep a grip on it. He told me that it's going to hook quite a bit, if need be he can drill a balance hole in it to take out some of the hook but he thinks I'll like it this way, we'll see I guess.

The layout looks almost identical to the layout in this video at 2:13 (45 x 5 x 40)

If it throws as great as it feels to swing I'm thinking about maybe getting a new Hamme Blue in 14lbs. to replace my old Hammer Blue 16lbs.

Let us know how it works out. I have been itching to get a new ball so bad and I keep coming back to this one. I just got picked up as a full time sub on a Thursday night league in addition to my regular Wednesday league, so I think that is a good enough reason to get a new ball....right?
