View Full Version : How many pieces of thumb tape do you use to snug up?

In my current ball I usually put in 4 pieces of thumb hole tape to snug it up a little. The idea is to layer them so they are just a little below each other instead of putting them one on top of another. If my thumb starts to hang up I take one out. Did you ever use more then 4 or less then 4 to be sufficient
enough to snug up? Do you use rough or smooth surface thumb hole tape?

Depending on the ball, since some of mine are drilled a bit bigger than others, its usually only one or two pieces of the textured thumb tape. I've had up to 4 or 5 pieces, but last Sunday I had to take every piece out of the three balls that
I used that day.

does it make a differance where you put the tape? front/back/side of thumb? I might start experimenting with the tape! I have 3 thumb inserts that are too lose!

The recommended location for thumb hole tape is where the pad of your thumb goes in and out of the ball. Also put your fingers into your ball and then your thumb and pull your thumb out slowly to see where the pad of your thumb is laying in the thumb hole when you pull it out. The pad of your thumb is not facing your fingers. It is facing in a different direction then your fingers. So under the thumb pad is where you want the tape.

I assume rough tape in the ball where the pad of the thumb will rest, and skin protection tape to the back of the thumb itself.

I used to have thumb problems and used whatever # of pieces were necessary. I finally had a new ball drilled with some forward pitch and then a hair too large so I could adjust with just one or two pieces at the nail side of my thumb. Your thumb is oval so, if necessary, make sure the sides of the hole are enlarged to fit your thumb. I had a helluva time and thought it was just me but when drilled properly and shaped in a slight oval it made all the difference in the world. I've never had to use tape on the pad side of my thumb but some folks do.

I've used every form of bowling tape made and it's through experimentation that I went with the white tape, not super smooth. But it's a personal thing.

I use it as designed; textured to the front and slick on the back. The amount of tape varies depending on swelling/size of the thumb that day.

As my hands are very dry do to some meds i take i use rough on the front and Vise Hada #3 on my thumb. I ahve anywhere from 2-8 pieces in the ball. At any more than 4 I go to black tape at the back so as not to change the span. On 90% of my balls i will just awitch to a smaller/larger IT as needed. I still haved 3 or 4 balls without the IT and those tend to uses the most tapw

I try to avoid using tape as much as possible. I tend to get my balls drilled small and work them out with a bevel knife to get a great fit. If I have to I will put 1 or 2 pieces of white tape in.

I do a couple in the front for grip, and then use the back for size fitting/snugness.

Never used tape in my life. Proper thumb plug drilling + the good fortune of not having hands that swell or change.

I have learnt from past tournament experience to have my thumb drilled big because it is alot easier to take tape out if my thumb does swell during large blocks of bowling, then it is to try and make a thumb hole bigger :P. I currently have 7 pieces of tape in all of my balls. Up until the last year I had never used or needed tape, but as i grow older my thumb had started to swell once in a while, and i feel alot more comfortable with it in my ball.

I usually atart with three pieces of tape. If my thumb swells up I take one out. Would rather have e Hume hole a little too big and build it up with tape then have it too tight and not be able to do anything about it.

I have zero in my ball currently. I have had to use up to 4 before though.

i use about 10 pieces a ball....but i had the thumb holes drilled bigger than what my thumb actually is,cause my thumb would swell up after a long tournament and wouldn't fit back in the ball the next day for another tournament. i need to get all my stuff redone soon since i don't bowl as many tournaments these days.
