I think Bill might have been refering to a persons level. Meaning you would'nt give a novice a heavy oil ball when he should be in a entry level ball. If this is'nt what Bill ment, then he might be refering to 2 people with the same ball. Person A throws the ball with a lot of speed and revs and person B throws low speed low revs. Person A can control the ball while person B struggles because of his low speed and revs. We will have to wait to get Bill explenation of what he ment!

If you are a beginner or novice bowler you wouldn't go out to bowl on an alley with heavy oil and a pro style bowling ball drilled for an aggressive reaction. You wouldn't be able to handle it. It depends how experienced you are and what kind of a reaction you want on your ball. If you are a beginner you start out with an entry level ball. You use that until you get some experience and yoy start to nail down a bowling style. What you should do is take some lessons, at least a couple anyway. That way you will know what to practice. Then as your experience increases you can get into more aggressive equipment. So you have to start out small and work your way up.
Talk to someone in a pro shop and tell them how experienced you are and they will set you up with what you should be using.

Let's use the DV8 Marauder as the example ball. Adam is a low speed, high rev coast to coast cranker. He stands on 35 and crosses the arrows at 18. All his throws look very similar; long, continuous arc the whole way to the pins. Steve is a medium to high speed, high rev cranker. Steve also stands at 35 but his ball crosses the arrows at 21. His throws go straight towards the ten pin and hook sharp.
Both guys are crankers that start at the same point. Given how they prefer to throw which one would enjoy the Marauder more? Keep in mind, the Marauder was designed for a strong back end move (for a symmetrical core).
Now you can drill a ball to have a different reaction than was designed but only to a certain extent. There is no real sense in fighting how it was designed. If it was designed to go long and hook hard, drill it that way to maximize the benefits. If it was designed to have an arcing hook and read earlier, then guess what, drill it that way. Unless you all think you're smarter than the engineers and ball companies that have spent lots of money on research and development...

And I didn't even say what kind of oil pattern  That would be a thread all it's own

Well, I'm no expert but I can say that my Marauder does exactly as Bill described - it goes long and hooks hard into the pocket, especially when I play down and in, lined up with and rolled over the second arrow. Man that ball hits like a truck, it's so much fun to see the pins take flight when this thing hits the pocket correctly. So if you are a down and in player, the Marauder is a great ball to have in your arsenal. If you are a coast-to-coast cranker then you might not like it as it will tend to lose energy and not hit as hard, at least that's what it does for me when I try to do that.

As Bill said, rather than fight the ball, I play to it's strengths. It's really paid off so far, I've gotten consistently higher and higher scores than I've ever had before buying this ball. That first 300 is on the horizon, I can see it now... :)

Steve, that's a tough question to answer. According to your profile, you have two pearls, one made for med-heavy to heavy oil, and the other appears to be more of a medium condition ball. Are you trying to fill a missing spot in your arsenal?

I can crank the Marauder as can anyone that knows how to crank. The point being, if you want a ball to go long then hook then get one designed for that. A long continuous arc, get one designed for that. Then the drilling will compliment the ball and not work against each other.
On balls I plan to crank with I tend to get them drilled to read earlier. So that being the case, my Marauder fits the bill but it does seem to work the best from the middle to the outside.

i am just trying to figure this out before i buy any more bowling balls + my misfist should fit into a nice light oil ball then after that i want my balls drilled different so so going long doesn't work i can switch coast to coast or what not, not sure if this is a good idea sometimes a ball doesn't work and people switch i see it in my league all the time and the guy on my explained it as sometimes a ball just doesn't feel right the night if that makes sense so i was just wondering

What he said is true. All my stuff has the same span and pitches yet some nights a ball just won't feel right in my hand. It has nothing to do with reaction, just feel. Reaction wise, some nights a different layout helps when my usual line isn't working. Maybe I should say starting line because I'm all over the place most nights.
Messing around with different layouts is how I found what I like best which was different than what the pro shop thought I should use. Doing this also helped me understand what I should have expected from the other drillings too.

So the wand chooses the wizard.... er I mean the ball chooses bowler. Does this mean that the Iceman is destined to be chosen by a Nightmare whose core is made with a feather from the same Phoenix that donated the feather for The Dude's Nightmare?
