Long story short: A relative of mine came into a large sum of money yesterday and out of the blue gave me some early Christmas presents, one of which was a Wii game system (new toys are always welcome in my house, especially free ones). So if you have one of these, what games do you recommend?

Being an IT programmer guy look at "soft modding" your wii.
That is all I will say on that ;)

Yeah I was thinking about doing that, but even so, I still want to know what games are worth "acquiring".

well if you want to playing bowling on it and not just the bowling on wii sport you cna go and get the brunswick pro bowling its fun and hard(mostly hard to hook the ball. and the game follows your arm swing and if your arm is off by a inch your throw will also be off.

Was searching around for bowling games for this thing (what can I say, I'm an addict) and found this: http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Bowling-Ball-Nintendo/dp/B002GEA4U4/ref=pd_sim_vg_1

Out-flippin'-standing! I gotta get one of these! :D

I'm reading reviews on the various bowling games and bunches of them is filled with "avoid this game" and "don't waste your money". Are these guys just lousy at bowling and complaining about it, or do these bowling games all suck? Curious to hear from actual bowlers and not a bunch of crybabies who are mad that there's no cheat code to get a 300 or something. Everyone is saying the Wii Sports bowling game that came with the unit is better than these other games. I find that a bit hard to believe if so, but if that's true... well, I'm a programmer and yes I've written games.... hmmm....
Edit: Well nevermind about developing anything "official" - the cheapest devkit is $2000, then you have to apply to be a dev with Nintendo (more $$$) and they require you to be an actual company (more $$$) with an office (a bunch more $$$) then you have to get your game ESRB rated (even more $$$) - it'd be cheaper and quicker to build my own home alley than deal with all this noise.
Maybe an unofficial Flash game tho.... the Wii has it's own HTML5 compliant browser... I can already hear the crickets chirping as I talk geek speak on a bowling forum... ahh nevermind. :) The wii bowling ball is neat though, I'm gonna be getting one of those.
Wii sports bowling is awsome lol enjoy the wii! ive had lots of fun with mine

I have the Brunswick bowling. It's pretty cool with season, career, tournaments and all. It has lots of balls to choose from although they are all old.

I also strongly recommend "soft modding" your system. You can play any Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Ninetendo 64 game. Nothing like a game of good old fashioned original Zelda for entertainment.

Well I'm officially addicted to the bowling game on Wii Sports Resort, spent most of the night last night playing that - outstanding fun, that game. Going to have my kids over this weekend so there will be a ton of Wii bowling going on at my house this weekend, plus actual real-life bowling as well on Saturday. :D Good times.
If anyone has the other bowling games for the Wii, I'd love to hear if they are worth getting or not. My GF is on board with getting the Wii Bowling ball accessory as well, so I figure I should build up a decent collection of bowling games to go with it.

LOL, I forgot to mention too that we have had a couple of close calls with the remote already, so if you have little ones, REQUIRE them to wear the wrist strap. For some reason 5 year olds think the best way to bowl in Wii Bowling is to swing the remote hard enough to embed it into the ceiling. At one point last night the remote went sailing high into the air and headed right for AZBowla's Girl's head. Yikes! Thankfully, it missed...
I'm hoping to come home from work today without seeing a Wii Remote lodged into the front of my flatscreen TV. Wish me luck.

I only have a few games for my Wii; Mario Kart, Mario World and Tiger Woods. Mario Kart by far is the most fun when you are playing against other people.

TWICE, that's right, TWICE my granddaughter didn't use the strap and put the remote through her parents flat screen. I blame the parents for being stupid enough to sit there both times and watch her do it.

Gotta say I never had any luck with the Wii sports bowling game. I just never got it, I guess! I started smacking the crap out of Wii baseball, though, once I figured out the less you move the controller the better off you are.

We have been playing the resort bowling game nonstop since we have gotten the Wii the other day. And yes I am very glad that my son did not actually hit me with the remote as it came flying at my head the other night. For some reason things always come flying towards my head. LOL I have no idea as to why, but has always been like that since I was a little girl. Oh well. And I keep beating AZBowla in the bowling game too. Hehehehehehee and when I have been bowling against him for real the past couple times, I have beaten him that way too. Hehehehehehee...:)

A local sports radio guy down here states a man gets hit in the groin 3 to 4 times a year by children under the age of 10. Just be glad it's your head...

I played Wii Bowling so much. One time I swung so hard the controller flew out of my hand, broke the wrist strap and flew at the TV but didn't hurt it.

So far the process seems pretty straight forward, I will be attempting this tomorrow during the day since I'll be home. I have a 3TB monster of an external USB drive that I was also given as an early Christmas present that I will be using to store games and DVD's on. I will have my own home arcade and media center if this goes right. My kids will never want to leave the house, LOL!

Your kids never leave the house anyways love. ;) LOL Well, at least when they are at their house that is.
I can't wait to see what all you are going to do to the Wii and what games we are going to be able to have. :)

Yeah, if I'm reading these mod sites right, we can have 'em all on there with room to spare. Time to start a subscription to Gamefly... :)

I've had the wii since launch and honestly it collects dust. Every once in a while we do break out the mario party games. They are usually a fun time

I can relate to this, i would much rather go bowling, so since i modded it the wii has sat other than when my 12 year old cousin comes by and i kick his butt at mario kart :D
