After failing to make match play in the first two Professional Bowlers Association Women's Series events of the year, Missy Bellinder of Fullerton, Calif., benefited from a week off and regained her stride on the way to the top spot at this week's event being held alongside the CLR Carmen Salvino Scorpion Championship in Vernon Hills, Ill.

The 26-year-old right-hander averaged 239.43 during qualifying at Brunswick Zone Hawthorn on Thursday and paced the 16-player field with a 3,352 total for 14 games. Michelle Feldman of Auburn, N.Y., who has a win and a runner-up finish so far this season, is a close second with 3,338, while USBC High School spokesperson, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of North Richland Hills, Texas, is third with 3,192.

The top 10 women will bowl nine games of round-robin match play Friday, after which the top two will advance to Sunday's championship match.

"I was just trying to keep up with Michelle (Feldman) all day," said Bellinder, who bowled on the pair next to Feldman on Thursday. "Going into today, I just wanted to come out and have fun. The break helped tremendously as I was able to relax and refocus."

On the men's side, Ken Simard of Greenville, S.C., took advantage of some advice from soon-to-be PBA Hall-of-Famer, Norm Duke, and cruised to the top spot with a 3,500 total for 14 games Thursday. Wes Malott of Argyle, Texas, is second with 3,378.

Also making the cut were local standout, Robby Spigner, who finished sixth at the same event as an amateur in 2002, and Australian two-hander Jason Belmonte, who received a Commissioner's Exemption into this week's tournament.

"I had a great cross, good reaction and some great bowling balls," said Simard, who rolled one of five 300s Thursday. "The week off really helped. I had a 30 minute conversation with Norm Duke in Taylor, and he helped me change my grip and work on some things with my arm swing. Tomorrow, I just will try to keep the same rhythm and take it one game at a time."

The top 32 men will bowl nine games of round-robin match play Friday before the field is cut to the top 16 for nine additional games. After match play, the top four men and top two women will advance to Sunday's finals, which will be televised live on ESPN at 1 p.m. ET.
