looking at the area around where the chipping has a occurred (and not being able to see the rest of the surface), there looks like a inordinate amount scratches around those areas.
Like the ball has been hitting hard against something in those areas. Also there doesn't look like any beveling on the hole edges, real sharp edges tend to crack and chip easy.
You should check with the pro shop and see if any other are having this prob. with that ball.

thanks bowling 1820,, the scrathces are from me trying to take the sharp edges off with sand paper! Its like glass! It seems to be crumbling around all the holes!

Is this common around finger holes on this type of ball? ( the clear finish?) Its crumbling around all the holes, NO Where else.

almost forgot,,, (in the top picture a big hunk came out and they had to plug it for a fix)! You can see on the left of the hole where it was fixed!

For a new ball Crumbling around the holes like that shouldn't be happening.

Same thing happened to my Columbia 300 white dot after about 2 years, I'm leery about getting another spare ball because of this.

just a thought i may be 100% wrong could it be a bad drill like whom ever drilled it messed up?

I have been told that the chipping around the thumb hole and fingers are normal. All of my balls are starting to show signs of chipping!

Three possible causes for the chipping. 1.as mentioned not enough bevel 2 use of crazy glue/super glue instead of glue formulated for use on bowling balls (makes surrounding area brittle 3. dull bits used during drilling. Most likely cause is a combo of 1&2. I use Vise purple glue which is about $4 bottle vs the cost of crazy glue. The golden globe i just retired is 4 years old and the holes are still like new. My sons spare storm is 10 years old and the only plug work on it is when he switched to a Sarge Raster grip

mine is MAJOR!! I have never had a ball do this!! Do they bevel edges when using the Vise grips? I have that on all my other balls, and none are beveled? They do have a plastic sleeve inside the hole???? I don't think they are suppose to bevel hoes for the vise thumb inserts! As for the fingers??????? James won't answer my calls!!! JAMES>>>>> CALL ME!!! (the guy that drilled my balls!)!
MICHAEL
12-08-2012, 06:29 PM
James called, wanted me to send him the pictures, said he would take care of it. Said he might plug all the holes and start over! Will let you know how it all turns out! Never had this happen before!!!

That big dull place on the left is a plug job?? I have to say that's the most god awful plug I've seen. why is it so rough looking? it should be as smooth as the rest of the ball.

I thought it was a big chip. Does Bruce have a 4 year old plugging the balls? That's horrible!
MICHAEL
12-08-2012, 10:36 PM
IN fairness to James and Bruce it was the Storm 1 plastic ball. ( its that clear coat with writing and the storm logo), maybe they are hard to match?
But then what do I know about plugging THAT type of surface? I know they will make it right! He has the pictures, and said he will get it from me tomorrow hand have it back to me for league Tuesday!
Will let you know what the problem was in their opinion, and what fix they decide to do!
His first thought was that he would plug all the hole and redrill! I wounder what your thoughts would be on this fix! This has been my life saver on ten pins!! I had a streak of 24 hit in a role on the damn ten pin with this ball! I am 85 to 90 percent on hitting that ugly pain in the ask pin!!!

Any Storm Rep's out there??? Would you give me a new ball? I have only had this ball a couple months!!

It's only a plastic ball so I don't really see a problem plugging and drilling. Hopefully they bevel it correctly and use the proper glue this time.

Thanks for the information bill,,, will let you know what happens! I JUST KNOW I NEED THAT PUPPY!!!! NOW!!!!! I can't get that 10 pin with any Consistency without it!! I don't think they bevel balls that get the vise system, the thumb screw in thing has the bevel! None of my Vise system balls have a bevel

For the record, it is smooth. The problem is, the ball is CLEAR, with black inside of it. So that's why it looks like that. The spot where it is plugged is not rough to the touch at all, right Mike?
This is the ball, even though you can't tell it's a clear finish, with the black inside.

Okay so it has a layer of clear over the black. I see now, that being said.
As for Clear shell or clear balls "get rid of them" they are disaster's waiting to happen. Everyone of them I've had something happened to it. From the Clear Wolf which had a groove carved all away round the ball to my favorite the Optyx Smiley face ball which hit something in the pit and got a chunk knocked out and shattered.

So the Zombie, from DV8 is a ball nobody should get also?? It has that same clear finish right??? hummm I will talk to James about this problem, and see if I should just move on! I would guess all spare balls are the same, but is there one that is BETTER then another??

Hey it's up to the individual! To me they are a problem, if they get damaged unless it's just very minor. you can't fix it and make it look right. ( look at yours the hole looks like it has a black eye).
The only thing that might be worse are Viz-A-Balls, you can only sand them 2-3 times before the picture starts coming off.

My Spare Tire from roto grip never gave me any problems. When it got tracked up I'd get it resurfaced and it was fine. Too bad they don't make it any longer or I'd get int in my current weight.

No, the zombie ball does not have a clear finish. It's a Viz-a-ball like Bowl1820 said. So the image can look distorted eventually when more oil gets on/into the ball.

Mike,
All finger holes, no matter which brand of grip is used, MUST be beveled in order to decrease the chances of finger cracking. This particular style of ball is just like all other polyester ball in regards to susceptibility of cracking, ergo, it is not more brittle than the others. If the finger holes were left off-of-the-press sharp then their cracking was inevitable, no question about it. The damage around your thumb can be attributed to your track rolling over the thumb hole. Unfortunately slugs and interchangeable insert systems tend to increase the cracking chances in that area. I have seen this with all brands of polyester equipment from various bowlers. That's just a tough break, no fault to anybody there.
In regards to the plug work done by the middle finger, that roughness shows when the plug is freshly cut but not resurfaced/finished. To make it smooth and clear, therefore blending into the ball well, just have the ball resurfaced and that should address the issue.
That's my take on the situation. I hope everything is resolved well and quickly for you.

I will have it for you tomorrow at league. All we can do is plug it, storm said they won't comp the ball cuz it's normal wear and tear. I plugged it and it will harden up and I will re-drill it tomorrow. James
Sent from my iPhone
Normal wear,,,,, two months,,,, thrown only for 10 pin leaves!! STORM WILL not be one of my future ball's ever again!!! I am Hard Headed and Irish!! Wow.... Normal wear, such a shot time, and only used for 10 pin leaves!!! They SURE DON'T STAND BEHIND THEIR BOWLING BALLS!!!!
That Storm plastic bowling ball will have more plugs then most golf courses!!! 4 plugs! I told James to send it back to Storm, I will buy another brand! I will be without a spare ball for a period of time, but will do fine!!

Not sure what the problem is with the Storm 1 ball, and I don't think Storm really cares! I must thank Bruce/James for taking care of the problem I will have pictures of the work they did!
No luck with STORM, not even a (were sorry your ball is falling apart), but, BP's Pro shop at strike in spare lanes, and AMF northland lanes did at their OWN EXPENSE to make the ball right again! Thanks!!

Mike, I checked all my thumb holes as you were questioning the Vise IT system as a cause due to no bevel. None of mine were beveled. So I contacted Vise and was told the bevel is suppose to be in the sleeve you screw in, that when installed acts the same way as if the hole was beveled. Seeing as none of my thumbs have done this, it appears as if the tracking over the thumb was the culprit to that hole. Not sure about the finger holes, unless you were tracking on them too.
MICHAEL
12-17-2012, 12:55 AM
No,,, not tracking over the finger holes, and a deep chunk was the first problem I had with it! Then the crumbling around all the hole? hummmmm wonder if it could have been the wrong kind of glue, as Storm1 mentioned? Or just the ball cover stock! We will see how it holds up! Thanks China Bill!! Haaaaaa, soooo!! Good luck with what ever you decide!! Do you like oriental food?,,, Do you need a body guard?? If the pay is huge, I could be that!! let me know!! Nobody jacks with older body guards,,,, they have much respect for elders in China!!! Let me know before Christmas if you would!!!! thanks bill!

lol, "china bill". Bill-san!
Anyway, for those questioning the glue, I can confirm it was ONLY 3 drops of "gorilla glue" used on the finger grips.
By the way, you did great with the spare ball last night. You didn't miss one 10 pin.

Funny thing Jason-son, the spare ball now tracks off the thumb hole! Figure that!! Am I throwing it different with the Mongoose wrist support? Or,,, could it be because of the plugs, changing the dynamics of the ball?? Its showing a clear track off the thumb ¼ of an inch! Before it was center of thumb hole! I guess Bill-son,,, won't be leaving us!!

If you're using the brace then you are rolling it different. My track is also lower with the brace than without.
Guess I'm staying out. I was really looking forward to it though. My daughter and step-daughter were going to go also. The wife said she woulndn't.

good point, but I do take the brace off when throwing the plastic ball, due to the hook it adds to the ball with more lift! I have thrown the plastic with it on some!! hummm good point!!
