A while ago, I picked up one of those bowlers's record books. It seemed like a neat idea at the time (Great if you are the anal type), but I am not one to record every detail of my game. There were tables to record each ball, layout. That inof is of more trivial value than anything else to me now. It also records each game's competior's scores as well as my own scores, and team points; a bit overkill, I thought. But I thought I would give some detailed analysis a try.
So, I began keeping a frame-by-frame record of my personal league bowling scores. I also recoreded the pin leave in the open space in each box. I found this very helpful as I can now more accurately track my weaksnesses and work on them in private practice. If I have a lot of 5-pin leaves, for example I know I am very high in the pocket, and work on first ball delivery in practice. I can see the number of missed 7- pins and 10-pins and focus on corner pins as well as adjustments to avoid the corner pin leave. If I get assorted "funky splits", I can concentrate on playing a different angle or mark with a given ball. Also work on split conversions. These are things I may not recall in practice sessions.
Another particulariy useful benefit for me in terms of personal bowling score goals is that I can see exactly how many open frames I have and calculate my potential score. It's a wakeup call when I roll a 168 with 5 open frames. That's a potential 225 score. I kick myself when I see that and re-evalute the value of a closed frame.
Anyone else keep detail notes? Why?

I would love to track this information, however (atleast for me) it does more harm than good, I have tried tracking frame by frame + pin leave, but when i do this i tend to loose focus on the task at hand and end up doing stupid..... if there was a way to automatically do this (short of hiring a lackey lol) i would be all over it. (ally computer system doesn't track this information)

I use a bowling app on my droid. It's My Lane Play. I love it. It tracks EVERYTHING. All pins, spares, pocket hits, cross overs, %'s, strikes, etc. I can look at which ball I used, what lanes I bowled on, etc.
I know others have an app for I-phones too. It's super easy. I just enter after every frame. I also keep track of all practice games. I have over 150 games on it and I've only had since Sept.

I have the My Lane Play app as well and during leagues I will write down what pins are left, strikes(pocket or Brooklyn) and spares, then enter them on my phone after every 3-4 frames. Since doing this I have increased my avg by 21 pins! The app gives percentages of how many stikes you made per game as well as percentages of spares made. The app also tells you how many of a paticular pin you left each game and has helped me adjust where I throw ball or maybe I will switch balls. The other neat thing about this app is,it will let you keep track of what ball you use for each game even if you switch balls in middle of game.

I use PinPal on my iPhone. Has tons of cool stats including which pins you left each frame and how many times you left those same pins too....I leave 10 pins the most, 7 pins second. Also shows all your multi-pin leaves too. Has graphs showing which way you are trending each week. I really like it a lot.

When in league, I don't spend a lot of time focusing on the other bowlers or even my score during play, so first thing I think of what my shot felt like, grab my pad write in the score, reflect on the improvement. It is a wonderful focus tool for me.

Thats what we do on our team. I keep everyone's stats on my phone for our team and we just take turns entering each others shots. I don't look at the stats until after we are done bowling.

Yes I do. I keep track of it all on my iPhone with the Bowl Sheet 2 app. I keep track of starting position, target board, break point target, actual target hit and break point, ball thrown, ball specs, ball layout, pins left, score, shoes worn, pattern bowled on, center bowled at, event bowled and everything. Anything you keep track of can be reported on as well. It is awesome!
You can even keep track of one person, or a whole team.

I do it by hand. Too cheap to pay extra for data and a smartphone. I even track where in the pocket the ball hit, what I hit, what I actually aimed at, speed and anything I can think of. I fund I was making my adjustments sooner this way and it's helped me. Am I anal? I don't know but I can tell you what ball, speed, rotation, approximate rev rate, line played for the third frame of my second game six months ago and where it actually hit plus the score.

I used to have a piece of software where I would track my games on paper, and put them into the computer later. It kept track of my spare and strike percentage. I could see which lanes I bowled best on, and which balls scored well for me. It was lost when my old computer went belly up, and it's no longer available. It was a great tool to have.

I also use the best bowling app...it's much more simple than Bowl Sheet app because it gives me the option to either put in scores by either pins, frames, or just end score for when I don't have a lot of time. I bowl mostly during my lunch hour. If the main operator is there, he'll usually print out my games that show my pins hit and misses so that I can enter that info later. Best Bowling app to me was the best because it really breaks down every detail if you have time to put in all the info. Bowl Sheet 2 was too complicated to navigate, but it might be better for a league team.

I'm using PinPal on my iPhone and it's great. I've also got BestBowling but PinPal is easier to use at the lanes.
