View Full Version : Are there limits on pin position on layouts?

For example on a drilling you would never put the pin placement somewhere around the thumb area or on the other side of the ball opposite the thumb and finger area. It seems like the good spots for pin location is somewhere around the fingers either above, to the side of or below the fingers. I saw a pin placement in a bowling mag that had a center line drawn on the ball from the bridge between the fingers and down through the center of the thumb. The pin was right on that line centered between the fingers and the thumb. How far above or below the fingers is too far or left or right of the fingers and thumb is too far? Are there PBA rules or regulations on distance of pin placements on layouts?

The layout you described is a 'Rico" layout named after the guy that came up with trying it. Tony uses it in one of the latest ball reaction videos posted here but I don't remember which one (although I commented about the layout).
As far as I know, the USBC nor PBA have any rules regarding layouts per se as long as all the weight rules are adhered to. As far as what appears to be a good spot, well that is to take advantage of the off balance weight of the core to produce the desired ball reaction.

Hmmmm. I think my No Mercy has the pin position you described.....

Tony used a Rico layout in the Ringer ball review video.

Rico was evidently designed for a stable and predictable ball reaction per this website

The pin does not have to be "around" the fingers, or off to one side rather. I have had several balls drilled with the pin in the ring finger. As long as it is done properly, it poses no risk....

Your picture shows the pin above and between the fingers. The one I was talking about would end up being where the flash of your camera is shining which would be between the finger holes and the thumb hole.
