Original AMF Blue Angle OOB finish

Anyone know what it is? Ive been searching and ill i can find is that its sanded. Im trying to get it to hook as little as possible so i was thinking of sanding it to 4000 grit but idk if its already at that or what. I would polish it but from what ive read its VERY hard to do

Back in the day sanded could range from 220 to maybe 600 grit, so 4000 abralon would be plenty smooth. What said that it we be hard to polish? It wouldn't be any harder to polish than any other ball.

The only old ball's that would be hard to polish are ones made with a proactive coverstock, then not so much hard as time consuming.

Basically what it says is that since a true urethane doesnt have the pores of a resin or a newer urethane ball, it wont take polish as well. I believe i read somewhere else that the ball needs to be heated up so itll take the polish better?

If what you say is true about the grit though im sure 4000 would be perfect

I don't agree with that at all. (especially the guy that said it takes a hour)

If not having pores made it harder to polish a ball. Then you'd just about never be able to polish a polyester (plastic) ball, they have even less porosity than a urethane ball. And there are plenty of polished plastic balls.

I've sanded and polished many, many urethane balls over the years. I've just used Wet/Dry sandpaper and many different polishes.

The main thing is when sanding you don't skip grits, you get the surface as smooth as possible, then use your polish. (After sanding, I'd use Rough buff first then follow with the polish)

As for heating the ball, your not "heating" the ball. Most times what they are referring to is "Burning in" the polish. That's when after you applied the polish, when you start to buff it off. you used extra pressure to your buffing pad and you start feeling the pad heating up because of the friction.

This was meant to make the polish/wax sort of thin and flow on the surface of the ball alittle more. Which gave it a harder,shinier coat, But you had to be careful. If you didn't watch what your doing, polish/wax would dry and cake up on the pad and stick and streak all over the ball. Then you'd have to clean it off and repolish.

Also this is usually all done on a spinner..

This is my old Burgundy hammer (I still have this ball it's the best urethane they made) its polished here, but not as polished as I could make it. I could make it look like a wet marble.

Im gonna get it sanded tomorrow and see if he'll polish it as well. Thanks for clearing it up Bowl!

One last thing, would it necessarily need to be sanded to 4000 if it was going to be polished? i would figure 1-2000 would be enough

It would just depend how you want it to be. If your want to kill it as much as you can go to 4000/rough buff/polish

Im looking to have it hook as little as possible as i use it for a spare ball.

UPDATE: I took it into my pro shop on thursday and my driller suggested that he drill the finger holes deeper and i used it for the first time tonight and it indeed lessened the hook. It was actually throwing me off cuz this was the first time i used it lol
