Hey guys, recently I've been having trouble with my ring finger. I'm getting these nasty blood blisters deep in the callus of my finger. They are sometimes painful, and extremely annoying.

I've been looking into the sarge easter grip for a while, and I know that it reduces stress of the ring finger, but as you all know I bowl two handed. Is even possible to throw sarge easter two handed?

How about using bowling tape on the fingers to protect them? It might be a cheaper solution and easier solution that having the plug and re-drill for a different grip.

I believe sarge easter cuts down on rev rate anyway, I doubt you want to lower your rev rate....

My rev rate is just fine.

I'll try it, but will that be a long term solution?

I'd be fine with my rev rate being lower. Less variables to deal with, lol.

Rev Rate doesn't really matter to me anymore anyway. Throwing two handed will keep it high anyway.

The Sarge Easter grip will lower your rev's only when you first start using it. Once you get use to it your rev's go right back up.

My rev rate is just fine. Don't you bowl with 2 fingers only? Have you calculated your rev rate bowling with 3 fingers using fingertip, and then calculated your rev rate after changing to sarge easter?

You have a violent type of swing, not as easy and relaxed compared to Belmo or Osku. I'd work with using tape than changing grip.

In regard to using the S.E.G. 2Hd'ed. I don't have first hand knowledge, but you probably could.

I think you'd be better served though, finding the cause of the problem first.

It sounds like it just recently started, so it looks like something may have changed in your release like ,using a improper release form, worn grips etc.

What does my swing have to do with not changing grip? I've been having this issue for a long time and I would like to eliminate it instead of using tape as a band-aid fix.

Its been going on for while, even back to when i bowled one handed. (which was 4-5 months ago)

I've posted videos of myself on here before, do ya think you could watch them and see if you can find the problem?

Kyle, I am probably the only person here who can truly answer this question. Not only am I a fellow two hander, but I use a Sarge Easter grip on half of my balls. First, it does not cut down on rev rate. My rev rate is in the 500-550 range with the Sarge. No your delivery doesn't have to change. The one thing to watch out for using Sarge is coming too far off the side of the ball, you can hurt your finger. From what I have seen in your video, despite your concerns, you do not come off of the side so much that it would hurt. The one thing I use with my Sarge is the skin protection tape on my ring finger to get it out quicker and easier. Any other questions, ask away!

You are freaking awesome man! I would greatly appreciate you answering a few of my questions.

1. Why did you originally change to sarge easter?

2. Will it fully eliminate the pain in my ring finger?

3. Is the grip more comfortable then regular fingertips?

4. How long do you think it will take me to adjust to the new grip?

5. Have you gotten most of your equipment re-drilled with S.E?

6. Do you back and forth between grips?

1. Why did you originally change to sarge easter? Because I liked the feel of conventional finger, but wanted the lift and revs from fingertip, so it was a nice compromise.

2. Will it fully eliminate the pain in my ring finger? It should. Mike Fagan says it's why he changed, and he eliminated all his finger pain.

3. Is the grip more comfortable then regular fingertips? For me, yes. I love the feel of having that one finger deeper, and gripping ball instead of rubber.

4. How long do you think it will take me to adjust to the new grip? Not long, maybe a few frames, but probably not longer than 5-10 games.

5. Have you gotten most of your equipment re-drilled with S.E? Yup, almost everything I use a regular basis.

6. Do you back and forth between grips? Yup, my spare ball is straight fingertip, and my 508A that I used Monday night, because dropping the ring finger would mean drilling into the pin.

I would suggest doing it on one, older ball you don't use much, and give it a few games to see what it feels like.

Thanks for all your help man!

Also I throw splits and corner pins one handed, would I still be able to do so with S.E? (probably a dumb question)

I just did a search for Sarge Easter grip and EHHHHHHHSHHHHH!!!!!!

I believe this would cause MORE splits!

I didn't know you already use bowling tape now. The reason is, your release looks violent. I'm not sure how it comes out. I would rather use bowling tape, than having risk of breaking your finger.

I see where you're coming from now.

I use bowling tape when it becomes painful to bowl, which has been happening more recently.

I don't know if my release would need to be altered for S.E to work, but I would hope that it would work

You wont break your finger, and you probably won't need to alter your release. Looking at the slow mo of your video, as violent as your head, legs, and most of your delivery is, your hand on release isn't violent. The problems on your fingertip is may just be from the rubber on the grips, because your finger is coming off of it fast, or the weight of the ball causing stress on it when the ball is in one hand at the very end of the delivery. Either way, the SE grip could help. If you go ahead with it, the first few throws take it really easy to see what it feels like.

It won't cause more splits either. Also throwing your spares with that grip, one handed, shouldn't be a problem. When I bowl one handed now that's the only grip I use. With a straight fingertip, it feels like I'm going to drop the ball.

How long has it been since your grips were changed? Just before the New Year the pain in my fingers was so bad I missed bowling for over a week for the first time since I started seven years ago. I started taping my fingers to ease the pain. Then my brain kicked in. I put my hand in the ball like normal and took a look: the worn grips were allowing me to put my fingers in too deep. I guess the callouses prevent the proper feeling in the finger tips lol

I could be way off but it's worth a look. Grips are a lot cheaper than tape or re-drilling!

Whnen your fingers are not hurting like hell, see if they are worn out on any of your balls.

I have bent my finger over backwards one time. Hurt for about a week. I didn't sprain or break anything but, ie ie ie!!!

Interesting development, I think I am starting to favor the traditional fingertip grip over my Sarge Easter grips. I was using SE so long I got used to it, but now that I took a few of my older balls that have fingertips on both fingers I am starting to like that feel better. The way it comes off my hand, it feels good and more consistent. I may start bringing 3 balls, all with fingertips for two handing, and keep the 3 SE balls in another bag for one handing.

When your fingers go in too far or when at the right depth they don't feel snug but rather loose. Sorry, I didn't see your post until now.

rocco,
quesiton. im currently looking into drilling a ball sarge easter just to see what it does for me.
i read that mike fagan thought he had a more secure hold of the ball after switching, and is somewhat why i wanna try it out.
also does cupping the ball become harder? easier? or stay relatively the same?
when you switched from fingertip to sarge easter did your pap change by a lot?

sorry if this is thread jacking. should i post a new thread on this?

If you use grips with lifts, the flat part, which that fat parts of your fingers rest on, may feel kind of sharp.

About 60 games give or take. When in question just bring the ball in to the proshop

There's no certain amount of games to know when the inserts need replacing. Just several ways..when they hurt, when you have lifts and they are no longer flat, when they are worn out.

Probably another thing to consider instead of Sarge Easter grip is maybe a forward pitch?

I saw a post on another forum. According to Osku & Belmo's spec sheet, they both have forward pitch. Osku has 7/8" and Belmo has 1" away/forward pitch.
