View Full Version : Power Outage at the Bowling Center while bowling

Has anyone else experienced what I experienced tonight? A power outage at our bowling center while we were bowling. It was such a shame... I really felt bad. Luckily, it happened during our non-sanctioned Wednesday Night Mixed League. In other words, we make our own rules (there are only 6 4-person teams in this league) and each team has a captain. So generally, the team talks it over, the captain takes our choice to the secretary or president. Its rare we have to do anything other than choose team names when doing that, but tonight we had a tough decision to make... because it only would have affected one team.

You see, the power went out in the third game of the night. Tonight was our Championship night. Now, while I was not in the Championship Game (to decide who wins the league - first half winner vs second half winner) we still had to figure how we could end this season. Long story short... one team conceded to the other even before any of the other teams began discussing what the options could be, but that's a whole other discussion because one of the bowlers on the opposing team had pre-bowled - a BIG NO NO in USBC Leagues.

So, anyway... has anyone ever had the power go out while you were bowling?
During a game? It was so bizarre! (Note: It was due to high winds and lightning.)

no but i can see how that would be upsetting. how did the other teams bowler get pre bowled? when will you be starting
to use your new ball ?

Closest experience I've had is having to change lanes when either the pinsetter or the ball return stopped working. The most dramatic was when either a belt started slipping in the ball return or the motor burned out and there was smoke coming out of the ball return.

Did you ever see the episode of the Andy Griffith Show where Howard Sprage had the front nine and the power went out? He had to finish the game the next day. I remember he took three steps and counted his steps. "1 2 3!"

Three step approaches were fairly common into the 70s. There are still a few of us left, as well as some people who think they're doing a four step when its really just one step plus a three step approach.

I'm not sure how he did it, when he did it or why he did. Haven't talked to him.

As for my new Roto Grip Disturbed, I'll use it in a practice session the day it's drilled. My local pro shop, who has drilled all my balls over the last decade, will drill it once it arrives. I'll likely start the thread once I receive the ball so I can give more accurate updates to its progress and scores. I hope to have it drilled and at least one 3 game series under my belt before May 12th. We leave for States the following weekend.

I've had pinsetter issues before. By far the most common of any, aside from calling for deadwood or a ball in the back. Haha! We have fairly new ball returns, so I have yet to experience any belt or motor issues. Can't imagine what that smelled like. Eeeewww.. lol

I'll have to find it on YouTube or somewhere.

Yes I have. High winds during a massive thundrstorm/tornadoes. Power came back on three days later and the entire night was replayed.

I was bowling in a tournament, not doing well. Just after I let go of the ball the power went out, so the ball didn't come back.
I told someone else there that I would leave, but they've got me by the ball.

I am guessing that would be the USBC ruling, to replay the series. But I wonder, no matter when the power went out, would all the games be replayed or just the game that was being bowled during the power outage?

LOL! That's a great line...

My Dad had just thrown a spare shot when the power went out last week and his ball was in the back. They called the mechanic to dish it out for him and rolled it back to him in the gutter from the back wall to the approach. They had to do it a dozen or so more times for other bowlers, in other leagues, too.

Is it? Because I missed a night due to a big storm and only two of my teammates made it. They bowled the first two games no problem, but the power went out during the third game. What the league ended up doing was any game that was finished counted. If everyone on your pair of lanes stayed and finished the third game after the power came back, the scores counted. If the teams left because of the power outage and storm, the third game was re-started the next week after the regular three games. I missed out on the first two games the week of the storm, but as a result, got to bowl in the third makeup game.

Thanks GreenDay... I wasn't sure. Maybe the USBC doesn't have any rules along those lines, it may just be ruled within each USBC League's blue laws (or whatever term you may choose to use) when each league has their own options like the blind bowler. Some leagues knock 10 pins off the average, some take 15 off, others take 20 or more, some base it on what the average is. I wasn't sure if the USBC had a ruling in the area, like they do for equipment, scoring, etc.

What is Pre-bowling? I swear bowling has as many odd terms as the Military does.

What is Pre-bowling? I swear bowling has as many odd terms as the Military does.

Pre-bowling is when a team is allowed to bowl before the leagues regularly scheduled games. Say if most of my team were planning to go on vacation next week, instead of having to forfeit, we can ask our league secretary to let us pre-bowl, and the league secretary will set up a time with the alley for us to bowl before we leave.

This rule was established to encourage more teams to participate in the Nationals, since many teams would be reluctant to forfeit a weeks league bowling as most seasons are coming to a close.
