Hey every one thought I would start a post or all my fellow book nerds. So post up anything about authors, books you like, don't like or want to read. I'll start with my Fav Author Christopher Moore I own all of his books! He is a very smart and funny author he is hard to explain but for anyone wanting a crazy story with silly lol "for real you will Lol reading and look like a loon" some of his books are best read in order. So you can look that up or ask me and I'll be more then happy to point you in the right starting points. I can even go into depth of what his books are about in later post if any one wants to ask about one of his books.
Jasper Fforde is hilarious is you can live with completely literary mixups :)
I'm a Mercedes Lackey fan myself (especially her Herald's of Valdemar Chronicles).
On the Sci-Fi side of things - Robert A. Heinlein comes to mind as one of my all time favorites. Mix in a little Orson Scott Card, Spider Robinson, Robert Aspirin, Larry Niven, Alan Dean Foster, Philip Jose' Farmer, Piers Anthony, .... well okay the list goes on and on :)

I've recently become a big James Patterson fan. I think it is because he writes most of his books with very short chapters. I am not a disciplined reader and hate to stop reading anywhere except at the end of the chapter (if I can't finish the whole book) and he fits that bill. If you know of any books that fit this bill (or shorter books-read in one session) I would be interested.
I think that is why I spend so much time reading the old threads on the boards and all of the "knowledge" articles I can find online. No interruptions, as it seems my time for reading has diminished drastically over the last few years.
Vacation is next week, so today-tomorrow, I am on a quest to find Mark Baker's Game Changer so I can take it in while relaxing. I usually get two or three good books in on a vacation.

My absolute favorite author would have to be Frank Herbert. Absolutely LOVED the Dune series of books, and even enjoyed the book "House Harkonnen" written by his son Brian Herbert (I believe Kevin Anderson co-wrote it). I will eventually have to go out and snag ALL of the Dune books written by both Frank and Brian Herbert as it is my favorite series.
I must also admit I do enjoy Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum's books as well. The Jansen Directive being my favorite book by Robert Ludlum, and Patriot Games being my favorite by Tom Clancy (as it's the first Clancy book I've ever read).
For the fantasy side of things I enjoyed Chrisopher Paolini's Eragon and Eldest (still need to read Brisingr and Inheritance) and who read and didn't enjoy some of R.A. Salvatore's works especially with his skillful Drow Drizzt Do'Urden? Pretty funny to me how a support character in the Icewind Dale Trilogy ended up becoming the most popular character in the series lol.
From Salvatore - I was more of a fan of the Cleric Quintet series. The Drizzt books I read were an ok read, but you are right, there is a certain level of irony tied to the fact that a supporting character ended up being the most popular.
Since both hubby and I play World of Warcraft, we read the books that are written to support the lore and the backstory of the world. Well, he reads them, I usually just here the details :) The long drawn out, gory, details....

DLP good stuff. I used to play WoW a few years back, and honestly the only reason I gave it a shot was because I used to be a diehard Warcraft 1 and 2 fan lol. The lore is pretty indepth, and its absolutely crazy how long they've been running it.
ClassyGranny - thanks for the bowling book idea!! Found it on kindle much less than in paperback. Sounds like I'm up for some casual reading over the 4th ;)

was going to pick up a horror book on vacation but the book store I looked at did not have it so I just stuck with re reading Fluke. On a side note I'm starting some cool threads around here ;)
I haven't read any good horror in years! I used to be a big Clive Barker and Stephen King fan but really haven't been into it much. Though I will say I'm always up for a good re-read of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, but I wouldn't necessarily call those horror.
I want page turning, keep me awake at night hide under the bed with my bowling ball type of horror... any ideas?

Ha ha ha no the only Horror books I have under my belt are two zombie books call the rising and city of the dead by Brian Kean, Cell by Mr. King, and Bentley Littels the resort that was the book I looked for on vacation but did not find :/ really I read a lot of off beat books that's why I read the Christopher Moore books. His books are very funny and done in away that makes you really Lol. but you will be sad you won’t ever be able to quote his works in normal conversation. For example I would love to be able to say.
“Shoes off in the whale! And don’t try and make a break for the anus.” in a convo, but I don’t think there will ever be a time when it’ll be useful and/or needed.
Fforde's not one you can openly quote in conversation either, but that's because it's completely off the wall.
Terry Pratchett is good for off the wall zany as well. Of the Diskworld books he's written, the ones I've read are always.. well.. a bit loopy but worth the read.
Then there is always Douglas Adams if you want zany and science fiction. Your whole whale quote reminded me of the whale and potted plant scene... an excerpt from the book:
“Another thing that got forgotten was the fact that against all probability a sperm whale had suddenly been called into existence several miles above the surface of an alien planet.
And since this is not a naturally tenable position for a whale, this poor innocent creature had very little time to come to terms with its identity as a whale before it then had to come to terms with not being a whale any more.
This is a complete record of its thoughts from the moment it began its life till the moment it ended it.
Ah … ! What’s happening? it thought.
Er, excuse me, who am I?
Hello?
Why am I here? What’s my purpose in life?
What do I mean by who am I?
Calm down, get a grip now … oh! this is an interesting sensation, what is it? It’s a sort of … yawning, tingling sensation in my … my … well I suppose I’d better start finding names for things if I want to make any headway in what for the sake of what I shall call an argument I shall call the world, so let’s call it my stomach.
Good. Ooooh, it’s getting quite strong. And hey, what’s about this whistling roaring sound going past what I’m suddenly going to call my head? Perhaps I can call that … wind! Is that a good name? It’ll do … perhaps I can find a better name for it later when I’ve found out what it’s for. It must be something very important because there certainly seems to be a hell of a lot of it. Hey! What’s this thing? This … let’s call it a tail – yeah, tail. Hey! I can can really thrash it about pretty good can’t I? Wow! Wow! That feels great! Doesn’t seem to achieve very much but I’ll probably find out what it’s for later on. Now – have I built up any coherent picture of things yet?
No.
Never mind, hey, this is really exciting, so much to find out about, so much to look forward to, I’m quite dizzy with anticipation …
Or is it the wind?
There really is a lot of that now isn’t it?
And wow! Hey! What’s this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like … ow … ound … round … ground! That’s it! That’s a good name – ground!
I wonder if it will be friends with me?
And the rest, after a sudden wet thud, was silence.
Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again. Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now.”

One of my all time favorites. We lived in the UK just after this came out and as a teen I really loved this book. Lots of memories quoting lines with friends. :)
Wish I could edit posts (never lets me)
I can never edit posts either. Bug in the system, among others on this board. The mobile site is kind of borked too. Can never get past page one of any post.

From i love every book he has done some way more then others so its hard to tell you a start point. Christoper moore FAQ 1) What order should I read your books in?
Some of the books can be read out of order. Lamb, Coyote Blue, Fool, and Fluke can pretty-much be read on their own, although there are some characters that appear in other books. That said, here’s the order I wrote them in:
Practical Demonkeeping*
Coyote Blue
Bloodsucking Fiends †
The Island of the Sequined Love Nun
The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove *
Lamb
Fluke
The Stupidest Angel *
A Dirty Job
You Suck: A Love Story †
Fool
Bite Me: A Love Story †
Sacré Bleu
† the vampire series, better read in order
* The Pine Cove series, better read in order.
Speaking of series - I just remembered a Fantasy series I read by Kylie Chan that relies heavily on Asian Mythology and Lore. She has written several others since then but I haven't started in on them. Really pleasant action/mythology page turners :)
'Dark Heavens' Trilogy
1. White Tiger
2. Red Phoenix
3. Blue Dragon
Adding Moore to my "read" list... Thanks!!!

I have to warn you if Cuss words and sex bother you skip the Moore books >_< but if you don't care then read on let me know what you think of his works. All this book talk reminds me I need to go to the book store this week and look for some new books to read.
If it's any consolation, 50 Shades sits on my bookshelf. I don't think cuss words and sex are a problem :P
And I have to agree with Laron's "Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo" series as well. I read all three books before watching the foreign films. I watched the American one because it had Daniel Craig in it.. I kind of wish I had left it to the Swedish!

I second that!
But if you read the 50 Shades series with the thought process of what's going on mentally - I think they are one of the best series I have read in a very long time - aside from the Tattoo series. I had a friend read them (male) and he agreed with me whole-heartedly. Another friend of ours (female) says she will never touch a page of them. I tell her she is missing some very powerful reading, imho.

My two favorite aurthors are Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.
I have read the entire 14 book series The Wheel of time which was started by Robert Jordan and finished by Brandon Sanderson after Mr. Jordans death. Very good series even though I think the last book was slightly rushed (Even though it was almost 1000 pages)
The good series by Brandon Sanderson include: Mistborne (Awesome series!!!!!), his new multibook epic series Stormlight Archieve (Can't wait for book two. Come out faster damnit!!) and a slew of one book stories that are all very good reads.
Another good series that some of you may watch is the Song of Fire and Ice series (HBO Series Game of Thrones) by George Martin.
If you like fantasy style books, I highly suggest these authors.
Just started reading Dan Brown's latest "Inferno" ... I've read all his others and they were decent reads (though a little long in the tooth on historic fact and such, which honestly I thoroughly enjoyed). So far so good!

Recently, I re-read Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. When putting it away I spotted Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Read two more from Douglas Adams after that and now I'm in the middle of a Sue Grafton mystery.
I should put in a plug for my cousin Joanne, but the truth is that since she writes Young Adult Fiction, (think teenage girls with horses) and Romance novels, I haven't read more than a few pages of one of her books.
Thanks for bringing Douglas Adams back up :) ... I keep forgetting how much of a fan of his Dirk Gently series I was.
Also the "Incarnations of Immortality" series by Piers Anthony was quite an enjoyable read. In fact, think I'm going to give that one another go here in a short while. Looking up the bibliography for the series, I've got some catching up to do!
