View Full Version : Bad layout or just me?

So as some of you might recall, a few weeks ago I picked up a used Misfit pearl, the span fit me perfectly, but the layout was very different from what I have on my Brutal nightmare. I decided to try it out and after a few weeks of using it, I am just not sure if I like the ball reaction. Now this could all be me and I really wish I had some video to post to let you guys see what I mean instead of me trying to explain and probably explaining poorly.

As of right now I am using my Misfit to mainly pick up spares in the center area, I will still use my BN to pick up 6-9-10 pins and usually 7 pins depending on how the lanes are going. I have a much easier time with my BN picking up those spares because I know where my ball will break than I do with the Misfit. Now when I use it to pick up spares, its all good, just have to get a few pins down which isnt bad. However when I try using it as my strike ball I have a hard time finding my placement to stand and aim and when I do hit the pocket it just sounds dead with no carry. I am not sure If my ball is rolling out to soon and using up all its energy, or its angle. But the difference in my BN or my misfit hitting the pocket is like getting hit by a brick or an egg, Ones going to hurt, the othes just messy...

So I know this is pretty hard to give feedback on with no video, And I am heading back to the pro-shop this friday and will not be able to get any video on those lanes before hand but what would you do in this case, I figure because the ball was used with a different layout my options are these:

Get the ball resurfaced and cleaned up by the proshop to see if it was just too dead for my home cleaning to fix it.

Plug and have them redrill, to something me and the proshop will think is a better fit.

Or, the one I am not really sure on. Should I get my Pap figured out on my BN and then use that to get a layout? And if I do that, should I change my BN or keep the layout as is?

I am hoping to go bowling sometime this week, but my shoulder has been sore the last week or so, If I do go I will try to post some videos to give a better Idea of what I am talking about.

Can you post pictures of the drillings on the two balls? That would allow for some comparison between the drillings.

The other thing is the difference between the Misfit Pearl and the BN coverstocks is Huge.
Depending on the lanes you're on the BN could be grabbing the lanes earlier giving you more control on the breakpoint where the MP is going to slide longer then grab when it hits the dry parts of the lane.

It could also just be the layout. I know I thought I was going to keep the Fringe the way it was for a bit, but only about a week of throwing it led me to believe this was not to be the case. The span was good, the ball was fingertip, the thumb was a little big (okay understatement there). I've since had it re-drilled to enhance what I already do with throwing my backup ball. Personally, I'll never look back. When it was in the shop it got cleaned and resurfaced as well.

Do you know how many games were on it when you picked it up? The resurfacing and cleaning might be the fix for that, but I'm thinking that you may end up wanting to re-drill it unless you really want to learn how to adjust to how it is currently drilled. Like Perrin said, pictures would probably help on that one :) I know from watching my hubby experiment that if it is a drastic difference from what you are used to, it may not work the way you expect or want it to no matter what you try.

On your PAP, I had the same conversation with myself. I just got mine figured out using the Fringe (after it's re-drill). I am not having it plugged and re-drilled again. I'm saving that info for a future ball :)

I'm going to say it's just too weak a ball for the conditions. I mean, switching from a Brutal Nightmare to a Misfit Pearl is a huge leap. The BN is for heavy oil. The MP is for medium-dry. Even if you break a lane down with the BN, there's probably going to be more oil than a MP can handle.

As it has already been said it could just be to week of
a ball for you and then it could also be that the drilling
and the PAP of the ball just doesn't fit your style of bowling.

If the PAP is too far off from where your normal PAP is located
then that can and most likely will affect the way the ball reacts
for you also.

I would suggest if you can not get it to react the way you're looking
for it to react then I would just have it plugged and re-drilled to fit
you and your PAP and also have it re-surfaced while in the shop.

I don't know my PAP that is my biggest concern. My first ball ever was 13 pounder that was drilled horribly wrong for me (about 1/2" too short on my span.) My second ball was my BN that I had a generic layout from my proshop and has worked out well for me. The Mistfit I bought was used and already drilled. So my biggest question is. If I get my PAP I would use my BN, and then put that on my Misfit. But should I change my BN after to reflect the PAP or keep it as is?

If the BN is working well for you there is no reason to change it after finding your PAP.

What finding your PAP will let you do though is to determine the Dual-Angle of the way your BN and MP are drilled and help you to make good choices for layout in the future.

What Perrin said! :)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!

Like I said, I know my PAP now, it's written down on my sheet at the Pro shop but that doesn't mean I'm getting my Fringe re-drilled. I'll save that data for my next drill :)

That being said if you are going to get the MP re-drilled, I can't see any reason WHY if you know your PAP to have the Pro shop use it - it will only be to your advantage

When you go to figure your PAP, DON'T USE THE BRUTAL NIGHTMARE!!!!!!!!!!
You want to use a low flare ball for this. Even if the Misfit Pearl has the wrong PAP it can still be found using that ball. The higher flare potential of the ball the more the PAP changes as it transitions going down lane.

What line do you play with the BN? The MP?

What billf said use the MP to get your PAP as it will not
flare as much as the BN will you want the lowest flaring
ball you can get to find your PAP with.

You'll want to measure from the first oil ring closest to the
thumb hole and if the Pro shop guy/gal knows what they
are doing they will/should already know that.

Thanks Bilf, I would have used my BN as I am more comfortable with that ball.

BN:
On the lanes I play league at I start right foot on 20 and aim for 12-13, and ball normally gets out to around 7-9.

MF:
Foot on 12, aim for 9-10, and ball to about 6-8.

I was able to play the other day, but sadly no video's, my wife was holding our baby most the time she wasnt bowling. I managed to pull out a decent set of games, first two where just my BN on every shot, 227 and 174, then third game was BN strike and MF spares, 186 and my last game was just MF at 203.

I figured out where to stand better with the MF but still didn't feel great, so I will probably get it redrilled even after bowling decently with it. The thumb has a slight pitch to it that I wanted to try out but doesnt really work for me, it rubs the base of my thumb a bit. Which could also be from the glove I wear shortening my span. Luckily with my BN it feels fine. When I get my new holes figured out, should I wear my glove as he measures everything?

Thanks for the Info guys, I eventually want to get a ball inbetween my BN and MF, was thinking the Diva or new Marauder Mutiny, (If I can convince my wife, Maybe If I buy her a new ball first she won't get mad at me, haha) But I wanted to make sure I had my PAP and got use to transitioning between balls first. That is definitly one thing to learn, When to use what ball.

You are absolutely 100% correct, learning when to change balls or as
most call it when to shell up or shell down on the ball surface is a very
important part of bowling.

I'm not a big fan of my Misfit pearl to be honest, my layout has the pin up and between the fingers it just feels like it never does the same thing twice..
