Kegal Challenge Patterns

Has anyone have lots of experience on these.
I was looking at the post my scores thread on the sport shot and I see shots like dead mans curve and highway to hell.
I have played all of them and in my opinion they should not be considered a sport shot most of them are way to close to house shots.
These are the kinds of shots they set up for all the sweepers around here and it generally takes around plus 200 to cash in a 6 gamer and plus 300 for a 12 gamer
and someone said it that thread that a sport shot consisted of a 3-1 ratio. Someone explain that to me since I know at my home center there are more units of oil laid out on Bourbon Street (this is the THS for this house) then there are on any of the PBA shots.

The Oil Ratio has to do with how much oil is in the center of the lane vs the outside of the lane.

The bigger the ratio the more "Walled up" the shot is . You have more oil in the middle which helps keep the ball on line to the pocket and a dryer outside which gives you more recovery.

The smaller the ratio the "Flatter" the shot is and makes it harder.Without the big difference between the middle part of the lane and the outside, you don't get the recovery and the same type of hold.

Here the two are compared:
The Bourbon st. pattern has a 6.2 to 1 ratio, The Dead Mans Curve pattern has a 3 to 1 ratio.

Here you can see that Bourbon has a lot of oil in the middle and the outside relatively dry, where as Dead man the midddle and out side are closer together and the outside is wetter.

Obviously, since I'm pretty much the only person posting sport league scores in that thread, I have some experience.

First, you can check our league standings at:

You can see how the league average varies from week to week, especially as the patterns change. By the last week of Boardwalk, almost everyone had the pattern figured out. We had one bowler get to the tenth frame of a game with a chance to shoot 300. Another bowler had a 290 game. This last Monday, the league average was nearly 30 pins less than that week and 10 less than the season average to that point.

There are times when the bowlers on a given pair will do a good job during practice and the first game, so by the end of the first game, beginning of the second, there will be a bit of room ( like one board ) to miss outside. If they don't,it it will be rare to see more than a couple people break 200 on the pair.

Ever since the season when the PBA didn't let the USBC use the PBA brand for its sport leagues we have been throwing sport compliant Kegel patterns into the mix. Next half will be all Open and Masters patterns to get the gut who are headed to the open in the spring ready.

Around here we cant seem to get enough interest in a fall sport league. There are generally a few in the summer. So right now the only time I get to play with these patterns are in sweepers. I do plan on bowling another one in the summer though
I looked through the recaps from your league how is your league setup if I look at the 1 and 2nd place team
Solimine has won 536 and lost 152 for a total of 688
Forry has won 413 and lost 223 for a total of 636
and last weeks recaps show different total being won and not all adding up to the same.
Explain this format to me. I have only seen the normal 4 pt format bowled around here.

It is an odd format. I think it's a variation of the team vs field format.

There are four bowlers on each pair. They bowl two games with the highest score for each game earning 6 points, next high earning 4, then 2 with the lowest score getting 0. An additional 12 points are allotted for total wood for the set in the same manner. After the first 2 game set each bowler moves to a new lane for a second two game set. When we had a set schedule, bowlers who started on an odd numbered lane moved left one pair and the other bowlers moved right. This season we are using a random schedule so your next lane could be anywhere in the league.

Using the points from the game scores the best you could do is 18 points per set or 36 for the night. However 4 bonus points are awarded for clean games and also for a clean set. This is how Tom Solimine has gotten so far ahead of everyone else.

The recaps don't really fit the Individual vs Pair format that we use. I usually skip to the page that shows how many points we each took that week.

This coming week will be a double position round. The first set I'll be bowling Schilkowsky, Lewis, and Grasty. There's a chance that Shilkowsky could move up to another grouping and/or that Grasty could move down a group. but I think that Tony Lewis and I are going to be stuck bowling against each other all night.

Thats sure a interesting format I wouldnt mind trying it out I just think that It would get voted down around here for being to complicated
I think there are two leagues in town that use the 24pt system and one is in the summer and the rest the 4pt
I like the fact that you get bonus points for clean sets.
