View Full Version : Question about playing deep and having a straight swing.....

You hear a lot of talk about keeping a straight swing that stays within a 4" box and never gets outside your head or inside your head where the ball swings behind your back. My question is in what direction are you swinging when you are setup like this on the approach to have a straight swing? Your sliding foot is on board 35 and you are targeting to have your ball go between the 3rd and 4th arrow. I know when playing deep you are supposed to walk straight. So when I make my straight swing do I swing the ball towards board 25(5th arrow) or because my shoulders and hips are open for playing deep do I swing my ball in the direction to go between the third(board 15) and fourth(board 20) arrow? When you watch the video on YOUTUBE called analysis of 10-pin bowling swing and release you see the pros swing straight out but when the swing comes down they have what looks like an inside out swing which makes the ball go to the right gutter(right handed players) instead of straight ahead where they started the swing on their approach. So it seems like if you are playing deep and try to have a straight swing to stay in that 4" swing slot you have to hope that when you swing down you have an inside out swing like the pros or else you will be going down board 25 instead of between board 15 and 20. So do you swing the ball on your approach towards board 25 and swing inside out to get it to go between board 15 and 20 or do you swing your ball on your approach towards board 15 and 20 in case you don't have an inside out swing like the pros? I hope I explained this right so you know what the heck I am talking about. Now I know that I shouldn't have had that Captain Morgan and coke before I asked this question. DOH!

Here it is broken down in paragraphs for everyone.

I have been struggling with this a lot this year. I like to keep a straight swing and place my ball where I want it but I have been throwing it away from my target towards the left gutter quite a bit this year. IDK if it is being sloppy or unfocused or what. It is extremely frustrating. Sometimes it works out and the ball will go towards the gutter and arc back into the pocket (if I control the ball speed around 15.5mph). But it is not what I am trying to do at all.

I too struggle with this. I can not do an inside/out swing. I don't have that control yet but do carry a 190 average. (Only been at this modern bowling thing for a few years). What my coach has me do, is open my shoulders slightly, and on my push-away, push directly toward my target to get my swing headed in the right direction. So I actually hit my target twice, or try to. If I push too far to the right (RH bowler), or open my shoulders further on the push away, I feel it on my back-swing...feels like the ball is gonna peg me right in the azz, I pull it around and wind up missing my target 10-15 boards to the left. Dunno if I'm just not used to it, or if I really did push too far. I'm still working at it and don't have the extra time lately (4 kids) to meet back up with the coach. But, occasionally, it works. Luckily (or unfortunately...depending on how you look at it), on my THS leagues, I'm not forced to play that line very often.

My question is in what direction are you swinging when you are setup like this on the approach to have a straight swing?

The "swing plane" or direction of the armswing, should be toward your target. With your shoulder's perpendicular to the swing plane.

So if your trying to hit 15, you don't swing toward 25.

I believe they talked about the 4" box (The Pro Groove) in them

I'm really happy that Hammer asked this question. bowl 1820, awesome tips again. Thank you much! It at least answers a question or two in my head. Now to execute.

I have this problem trying to play inside. Most coaches will have you (especially beginners) keep your shoulders parallel to the foul line...but if you are trying to arc out towards a target and have it come back...or trying to pick up a corner pin...you sorta have to tilt your shoulders to aim for that alternate target.

Recently I've been trying Joe Slowinski's DYDS technique and the BIGGEST struggle early on...is because it is a more left of body start...it opens your shoulders...and then you have to make sure to get those shoulders closed again as you release...or "PLOP" right into the gutter. A swing where the ball starts out to the right (right handed)...goes outward, then back, then forward...it's easier to keep your shoulders straight.

This is something I'm working on, however I don't plop it into the gutter - my body subconsciously tries to overcompensate so I pull the ball left at the release. I've been consciously trying to keep my shoulders more square on the entire approach, of course I'm not sure this is 100% ideal either. LOL, every little thing I correct seems to add a new problem

Well, the 1st Annual Billy Hardwick Memorial Aslan vs. ZDawg Southern California Championship will be quite interesting then!! The first tournament many people will see where one bowler throws the first ball in the gutter than picks up 8 pins…while the opponent answers by pulling his shot into the 4-pin and finishing strong with 3/6 open frame. :o

So you are saying there will be a lot of buckets (and I am not talking about beer)?

Please PM me the twitter account that will host the live updates and post match chat. Maybe @bucketsoplenty for the twitter handle?

Like most modern carp...I don't believe in "Twitter". I refuse to recognize it's existence.

The video will be posted on youtube after slight editing. I will then announce it on this site and Bowl1820 will make it mandatory that everyone here watch it or they lose their signatures.

Well, I "hope" thats what he does....but it'll probably just sit there and get 22 views unless having Hardwick's name in the title "steals" some views. ANd if it DOES get lots of views...zDawg and I will get "discovered" and go on to be successful TV personalities and I'll get laid by Alyssa Milano and drive a Lambroghini....so suck on THAT haters!!
