For the last couple weeks I have been doing research on these hot water baths as a DIY cheap way to extract oil from my bowling balls. I did not want to try it on my new ball so I decided last Thursday 4-24-14 to try a hot water bath on my old Brunswick Command Zone ARC.
Firstly I had no way to sand it so I just left it as is and put some tape over the finger holes. It was a little chilly that day so I used warm water first so the temperature change was not to extreme. I did not use soap because I read to many conflicting stories and felt it was just safest to just use water. After about 15 minutes I took the ball out of the water and wiped it off. I did not notice any oil on the top of the water. I do not know if it was because I did not sand it or if it was because the water was not hot enough.
I refilled the bucket with hot (as hot as I could from the tap) water now that the ball was warmed up. I let it sit for about 25 minutes. I did this 2x more times. Never did I see any oil on the top of the water if it was there. I took the ball out dried it off and cleaned it with some bowling ball cleaner and a microfiber towel.
Looking at the ball I noticed it was very hazy. It was very noticeable compared to where the tape was over the finger holes. I did read that sometimes it happens and it would go away after a couple days of drying out. On Monday 4-31-14 when it was still hazy I did something that I felt was a little dangerous.
Tired of the hazy look I put the ball in front of a small heater. Constantly rotating the ball to heat it evenly and keeping a close eye on it to make sure it did not get overly hot. It did not seam to do much as far as making the haze disappear. So I put the ball back in my room and have not touched it since.
It is now Friday 5-2-14. The ball is still hazy and I do not know if it is going to stay that way or not. Has anyone had this happen? Did I do something wrong? I assumed it would be hazy for a couple days but its been just over a week now. Does anyone know of a way to get the hazy look to disappear?
