Feelin ya Ice.
Thursday league I had 5 single pin spares. 3, 4, 6, and 2 10s. I went 3/5 missing both 10s.
I don't know what it is. But even at the psychological level…if I see that 10-pin (versus the 7-pin)…I'm feeling like I'm gonna miss it before I ever get on the approach.
Maybe plastic is the answer. But the "way" I'm missing them…so, so far off…I can't blame the resin.

I agree,,, when I am ON, ( in regards to hitting that Fricken 10 pin, I am ON)! Like you, I don't have a clue as to why some nights I get most of them, and others, and more recently I have been having problems! I only know one thing for sure, when 10 pins are a problem, it SUCKS!!

The 10 pin!!! Mostly mental, I think people over think it and end up missing. One night I hit every 10 pin left except the one I left in the 10 frame. I completely over thought it. I knew I missed as soon as I released. Plastic spare ball are good for being consistent but you can not let the 10 pin beat you mentally or you will most likely miss it.

ICEMAN, 10 pins used to be my nemesis pin. A year ago, even with a plastic spare ball, I was not very accurate at picking that pesky pin up. The last year, I developed what works for me and that is to stand to the left dot on approach at 30 board and focus on 3rd arrow 15 board and deliver the ball as straight as possible. This past year, I have picked it up 89% of the time. I am pretty pleased with that improvement and it shows with my average increase.

I achieve "straight as possible" by not bending my elbow (approx 22 mph) so the ball simply can't hook.
Back in 2012 when I first started back, I had a night of 15 strikes, and 16 ten pins, covering all of them.
The bonus is I bounce pins around quite a bit.
I just picked up an 8-10 by hitting the 10 pin, which hit the back of the 8 pin so hard it ended up out on front the rake.

For me, when I'm on i hit all my ten pin leaves. when I'm off and missing tens I find that i am simply going too fast. either my feet are too fast or im not taking enough time to really line up my shot.

I received some paperwork on it from Ebonite, but off the top of my head, I don't remember a price point, nor a release date.
It's different from a Viz-A-Ball in that the image is on the core, and then a clear poly coverstock is added so the image won't scratch.
As for hands on, the only one I've seen is the Red Angry Bird ball by Ebonite. Same clear coverstock.
Price for an Angry Bird was comparable to a Viz-A-Ball.

Last time I looked, I think that Hammer ball is quite a bit more expensive than a standard plastic spare ball.
If I was going to spend extra money on a spare ball less aggressive than my Slingshot…I'd probably look at a Track 300A or Motiv Ascent Apex. Or maybe go with the Storm Mix. Or I'd just give in completely and get the Motiv Arctic Sniper. The 300A and Apex would actually hook MORE than the Slingshot…but the Mix and polyester Arctic Sniper would make a nice straight spare ball.
Just not sure why anyone would pay for that new Hammer or the Arctic Sniper…about 3-6 times what a polyester Columbia WD costs….or 2-4 times what a 300A or Storm Mix costs.

That ball is a about $100 I don't get it either. I like the taboo spare and at least it has a full core so it would make a good strike ball if you ever ran into really dry conditions but still not worth paying for

Lol, last night I went 8 for 8 in 10 pin spares, first night I've ever picked it up 100%. Sure wish I knew what I did differently last night
I went 9 for 14 last night in practice.
For May it's been:
6/2 - 9/14 (64%)
5/29 - 1/2 (50%)
5/27 - 7/11 (64%)
5/25 - 2/2 (100%)
5/22 - 2/3 (67%)
5/15 - 2/3 (67%)
5/12 - 5/5 (100%)
5/8 - 0/1 (0%)
5/5 - 3/4 (75%)
5/4 - 2/5 (40%)
5/1 - 0/2 (0%)
Definitely getting better. I think I was around 50% before changing my game in the end of March. Now I'm closer to the 65% mark. But there IS something about the 10-pin compared to all other single pin leaves. I used to be closer to 70% with those and now I rarely miss and single pin other than the 10-pin. For example, in my current league, over a 24-game span...I've missed the 10-pin 9 times (out of 14) and I've missed ALL other single pins a total of 5 times (out of 39).
All other single pins...I approach it thinking, "Okay, I got this." But the 10-pin, no matter how I try to calm myself down, I seem to think, "Okay, I got a 50/50 shot at this." The accuracy with all other spares is 87%...so it's not "accuracy"....I think it's the mental side of the game.

Well, this afternoon on ten pins, I was 4 of 5! Went back to the weak sling shot, and threw it palm up release! I think I am going to stick with that, in the past I had some good results throwing THAT ball THAT way. Palm up takes the lateral spin away from the ball, and it goes where I throw it!
AS LONG as I stand far let, and shoot middle arrow palm UP, it get that puppy! FOCUS and keeping my speed down helps with the accuracy!
IT was a good day in regards to 10 pins, and now I have made up my mind in regards to Ball, and release. Will start keeping track to see if this combination keeps working! 10 pins can KILL A BOWLING AVERAGE!

Thanks, bud, I don't feel bad, but it was frustrating!!! I had good luck with the sling shot before, and the different hand release! Then some
friends on a bad night said to use the same release that I use on my ball for all other shots! It was at the point that I started having huge problems.
I tried several other things that others mentioned, but to no avail!
I have, with the weak drilled slingshot, picked up as many as 10 one night several months ago, still remember clearly, only missed 1.
I am going to stick with this and hopefully it will be making the faces, and rocking back and forth sticking my tongue out at the FRICKEN 10 PIN!

I'm getting aggravated because I actually prefer to leave the 6-10 than the single 10…for some reason mentally I feel more confident I can pick up the 6-10 than the single-10.
But recently…I've been chopping the heck out of 6-10s. I end up chopping the 10-pin off the 6-10.
Statistically…I'm 58% at single-10 pins…which is still very low, but up from the 50-51% it was a month or so ago. However, I am 60% at 6-10 leaves. Again, overall spare shooting IS improving…but the single 10 is FAR and away my most common leave and the 6-10 is easily my second most common leave.
If I want to meet my goal this season of finishing with a 193 average, I need to keep improving my ability to pick up the 6-10 and single-10. And it's not necessarily about switching to a plastic ball…for me anyways…because for every 6-10 I chop when the Slingshot grabs the edge and straightens out into the 10-pin…there's an equal number of times that ability to "hold on" allows me to make the single 10-pin when a plastic ball would have fell into the gutter.
But whenever I get frustrated about the single 10-pin, I remind myself of something that Barry Asher told me at a clinic.
I left a single 10-pin and said;
"Gosh, that is so frustrating!"
He replied;
"Don't worry, it frustrates the pros as well. And the better you get, the more of those you'll leave."
So I look at it like that. I'm SUPPOSED TO leave single 10-pins. It means I'm hitting the pocket. Maybe not 100% ideally…or maybe I AM hitting it ideally and I just don't get the break. But at the end of day…a single 10-pin for a righty means you're bowling the way you're supposed to and you are very close to striking. You can't say that when you leave a 1-2-9…or a 3-6-10.
I was frustrated at Thursday leagues because I left the single-4-pin THREE times in 14 frames. I actually had to get my phone out and "google it" to see what the heck pin was supposed to be taking out the 4-pin but obviously wasn't. And my point in mentioning that is, EVEN THOUGH I'm FAR better at picking up a single 4-pin (69%)…it was MORE disturbing to leave that so often because I SHOULDN'T be leaving that pin.

Yes, one thing that was passed on to me by Geno4, (who I bowl with on Tuesday nights this summer), MOVE BACK one foot! Theory is the ball will land in the alley a foot or so back giving it more distance to break toward the pocket earlier. Thus hitting the pocket at a little different angle and higher in the pocket.
Works for me,,, If I don't move, usually I will continue to throw 10 pin, (what looks like a nice pocket hit), all night LONG!
People in the past would say,,, THAT"S A GREAT LINE,,, DON"T Change anything,,, the oil will move, and it's going to start carrying!
NOT!!!
one day a Strike and Spare, I threw my record of 9 ten pin leaves, and didn't move BACK A FOOT! (slow moving oil I guess, LOL)
Moving up a foot, or back a foot works depending on the situation!

I guess it depends how close you bowl to the foul line and where the ball lands. If you normally drop the ball close to the foul line, if you move back a foot, won't you run the risk of putting the ball down on the approach?

I didn't know if you had your plastic re-drilled or not. You may find out changing your release is more difficult than you think. My accuracy goes way down when I try to throw with my wrist broken.

Had a lesson today with a great coach, Susie Minshew. If you don't know who that is, google it.
We talked about 10 pin pick ups, and while I convert at 86% currently, we both agreed it's not enough. There is no reason it can't be 100%. A tip she mentioned about shooting at spares, is to always think of another pin being left up there. For instance, one shot during the lesson, I left the 3-6-10. She told me to not only convert the spare, but to do so as if the 7 pin was also standing up. If the 10 pin is left, think of it as leaving the 6-10 and shoot for it with that in mind. I thought about it for a second, and came to the conclusion that she is right. By a raise of hands, how many of us convert the 6-10(4-7 for you lefties out there) spare at a higher percentage that you do the 10(or7) pin?

Never had trouble changing up my release in the past -- but then I didn't throw fingertip, either.

Yeah, the 6-10 is a little easier. It's a psych-out thing -- plus, there's a bigger target to hit, and you have other pins to help with pin action.

I'm 88% at picking up the single 8-pin. 8 for 9!!! BooYah!!
Even though more overall numbers are skewed downwards due to my "early struggles"...CURRENTLY...
I'm 100% at single 2, 4, 5, 6, and 9 pins. I'm also up to 60% on single 7-pins. This brings my overall single pin pick-up rate from 69% to 75%.
Unfortunately, I'm currently DOWN in picking up the single 3-pin (70%) and single 10-pin (35%). 7/10 on single 3-pins and 5/14 on single 10-pins thus far in league play.
So, yeah, as much as I'm not a big believer in the "mental game"...I have to admit that one area where the mental game hurts me is single 10s. Most single-pin spares I go to the approach knowing that I have a really good shot of picking it up. But for 10-pins...I'm standing there just afraid of it...knowing that I got like a 50/50 shot. Maybe the 6-10 idea will help.

Confidence in getting the 10 comes with practice. When you find a line that works for you and practice it a lot, you won't worry at all when you see it standing there. Remember, in practice, don't always just shoot for high scores.....take a game or two to just practice corner spares. It really does pay off.

I found a spot last night that seemed to work, like you said. I was only 70% but it wasn't "that" bad. But yes, I agree. ONce I knew that all I had to do was hit a target and the ball would hit the pin, it took some pressure off.

What few I get now with the deadly aim, I pick them up 90 percent of the time. I simply stand far left in line with the gutter, aim center arrow and release the ball Palm UP, (when it leaves my hand its rolling end over end!
I do throw a Weak ball, drilled that way, the Sling Shot. It has a LITTLE forgiveness, ( but not much) when thrown a little right of target.
Most of the time now with my new release I hit it now dead on! FOCUS,,, and slow on the approach is now my new mantra!
I think tens pins are in large part a HEAD THING! Once you come up with a delivery that your comfortable with... ( GAME OVER FOR THAT PESKY PIN)!

That's how I throw too - very far left and throw down the center arrow with a weak ball. If I'm within a board, it covers no problem! The trick is staying slow and not overthrowing!
P.S. I would still like to get a plastic ball at some point so I don't have to worry about oil and release differences.

ONE THING about using a very weak ball, and shooting across the oil standing far left, and aiming center arrow with a palm UP release position, I get NO movement to the left at all.
It might be fun to have a plastic ball, but in reality on 10 pins, shooting the way we do, the oil keeps my ball, which is spinning end over end, from moving at all. YOU would swear it was a plastic ball, instead of my weak sling shot!
try the palm up release,,,
A good old friend ask me the other day, after not missing any in league, "HOW Can I get them Ten pins"! I gave him the advice I mentioned above!

Jason Belmonte just logged in to get some advice on picking up 10-pins.
Although...I have to admit...I kinda felt bad for him on King of Swing last night. I kinda has that "baby face" sort of innocence about him and he's always smiling. I think it would be hard not to like him. I always root for Rash against him...but I gotta admit...Rash kinda seemed like a jerk on that telecast. I don't know why. But Belmo seemed to be smiling and waving to the fans. But Rash had a bunch of false starts, and would get upset if he made a bad shot...he wanted nothing to do with Belmo...and before playing O'Neill almost seemed like he was counting O'Neill's warm-up shots so O'Neill didn't get too many. Plus he had 2 ball reps there and he didn't seem all that interested in listening to them.
I don't know. I guess I'm waiting for a pro to emerge that is sort of the bowling fan's bowler. A guy that the fans love and he respects them and acknowledges them and puts on a show...but in a very respectable fashion. I mean, I love WRW...but he's come off as "akward". Same with Chris Barnes. And Bohn seems cool, but very almost timid. And PDW...well, I think he doesn't know what he wants to be. Half the time he seems like an elder statesman who is the bowlers bowler...then he'll go off on fans for making noises or make 1000 excuses for some bad shot.
I don't know. I actually can't remember a pro bowler that was like what I'm describing. Even my boy Earl...was reserved, and akward. Of matter of fact...some who have crtiqued his book that he wrote think he might have been sort of insane.

We may have a few things in common, like our dislike of cheaters! (not to be confused with the cheetah oil pattern), and our slingshot use for spares, BUT....
but then I must draw the line at that point!

I would drive to BP's Pro shop, located at Strike and Spare independence MO. Bruce Postel , the ower, use to bowl on the PBA circuit, and is still one hell of a bowler.
He then learned the art of drilling balls, and KNOWS HIS STUFF! He drills balls for some Pro's even now, AND gets orders from people in Europe.
Bruce will watch you throw your ball figure out your pap, and then drill what he thinks will enhance your game.
HE USES the Tri-Grip as does his working associate James, who does tournaments, and is one heck of a bowler.
They both swear by it.
I don't know who in Arkansas does it, maybe he also is one hell of a driller! I just know Bruce Postel is one of the best.
He use to drill for Pros on tour, at the locations of tournaments, with his traveling pro shop!
Like all balls are not equal, same goes for drillers! I am sure their are a bunch of Great ones out there, but Bruce is one of the best!
Drilled two balls for me that gave me perfect scores!
Better balance in hand, thumb out sooner, ball feels lighter because of the drilling,, ect... Try it,,, I don't know anyone around here that hasent liked it a bunch! good luck!
Give Bruce Postel a call: 816 313 6151,,, or bpsproshopsllc@aol.com He is on facebook,,,under BP'S Pro Shops
We are friends and I am one of his best customers.... LOL,,, tell him I sent you... Mike Pence,,,, might even get a discount using my name... LOL.... then maybe not!! LOL

Did you really call him>>>>LOL.... wouldn't hurt to ask him any questions you might have in regards to the tri grip. He useally gives a 10 percent discount when you mention Ice's name!! (:)

LOL
Thanks for the info!

What about Norm Duke?
He's probably the closest. Good call. He's a "little akward"...but I'd say he's closest. Every time I've seen him on TV he's been an absolute class act.
Ice...Ice...Ice...
1) Knowing Jesse Ventura isn't necessarily a plus. But it does explain the roids.
2) I've heard this all before. I've already heard trash talk after trash talk after trash talk...and all I gotta say is...I've faced opponents twice...I've won both times. And the only question I have is...when the trash talk turns into excuses (as to why/how you lost)...what will those excuses be? With Iceman being SO original...I doubt he'll borrow the reverse-block excuse or the non-maintained wood lanes excuse. I gotta think it will be a new and very original set of excuses.
Perhaps he'll play the age card..."it wasn't fair because I have a bad hip and Aslan is 20 years younger and a specimen of health and beauty."
Or...maybe he steals a page from the movie Kingpin and claims that in Missouri they bowl 15 frames to establish an average?
Or...maybe he plays the, "well, I decided to take it easy on ya" card.
I mean, it could be anything. Thats the real question...not whether I'll win....I ALWAYS win...it's what will the excuses be?? Will Jesse Ventura make an emrgency phone call to Iceman mid-game and call him away to some super secret wrestler/super hero convention in a tree fort??? We'll see.
Now, can I beat Rob? In Vegas?? Woo....not sure. Rob is a Jedi Master and I am but a Padawan. Beating Iceman...who is NOT Jedi material....who is more closely related to a moisture farmer...that will be easy....even for a padawan. But Rob? Hmm....in Vegas?? You have to understand...heavy oil is like kryptonite to the mighty Aslan. My first game of sweeps in Vegas was a 113!! Granted...I finished with a 184...but the point is...Vegas is evil. They put extra oil on the lanes so that people will get frustrated, stop bowling, and go lose money playing slot machines.

some people are easily please, I guess? Are you sure your from Missouri???? Maybe a transplant from San Diego ? I read it, and so did several friends of mine, they all thought it was as Un-pithier as it gets? Are you that long lost brother of Aslan, that ran off with a traveling Carnival back in the early 90's?
He mentioned in and earlier thread that your job was ,,, guessing peoples ages and weights in that carnival, until they went bankrupt,,,,, do to inaccurate guesses. ( that is if you are his bro)?? (:)
surly your not that brother that ran away because Aslan and you shared a room, ,,,,,,, ,, and the closet was full undrilled bowling balls, and no place for your cloths??
Na,,,,, you can't be him???

I am betting my dog, pictured here, can beat you two out of three!! I am sure he would take you on for a couple boxes of Ole Roy cheese sticks.... he's not that greedy! But one hell of a bowler!
YOU have NO IDEA how hard it was to find bowling shoes for a 3 legged bowling Dog!

Its getting to be a thing of the past, missing ten pin's! today I had 8 on the seniors league! 100 percent today!!
Oil has been bad all season, have my lowest average, and scores at this alley, AMF in North Kansas City mo. I shot down the 10 arrow even moved to the right in line with the ten arrow, but the ball just sailed right on by picking up the 6-10 pin. Its been crazy with that new oil machine that is suppose to be state of the art.
I know many good bowlers that have left those lanes because the oil is crazy! Several experience bowlers are telling me that its not removing the old oil but putting oil on top of the old.
It bowled to me like the US Open Sports shot. Oil all the way across!
I tried bowing out side, NO GO!!
I tried bowing inside,, NO GO!!
mechanic told me a couple weeks ago that the oil removal part of their 3 year old new kegal deluxe oil machine was NOT SUCKING THE OLD OIL up on the removal cleaning trip. I guess they had many conversations with Kegal about the problem
He then hook a shop vac up to the line that sucks the old oil and grime off the lane, and found and object that might have been blocking the flow!
They thought it was fixed.
I DON"T THINK SO!!!
Its the only league I bowl on that I can honestly say the Oil situation needs to be fixed, or I am Done!
GOOD NEWS was shooting 100 percent today on 10 pins.... ;)
Best I could do was throw 10 arrow standing at 10 dot, and throwing 1/3 of my normal speed! IT was tough keeping it down that much. Even then, the Byte was timid in it move to the pocket, but at least it got there.
BAD oil, in my opinion is tougher to PLAY then a nicely laid sports pattern! With BAD OIL, its really hard to make a great adjustment!

You know, there is a lot more "head game" to bowling than one might think.
