Ronnie Russell Leads Qualifying at PBA Bayer Earl Anthony Medford Classic

MEDFORD, ORE. (January 15, 2009) — Ronnie Russell of Indianapolis, Ind., earned the top seed for match play in the PBA Bayer Earl Anthony Medford Classic, finishing with a 1,579 14-game pinfall and a 228.36 average after Round of 64 qualifying Thursday at Lava Lanes.

Russell will join 31 other players who advanced from Thursday’s qualifying round in match play on Friday.

“I used the same ball all day which is pretty rare for me,” said Russell, who is looking for his first Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour title. “The last couple of years I have been getting better mentally and physically so I’m getting more used to being in this position.”

The top four match play finalists after Friday’s competition will compete in the ESPN-televised finals on Sunday starting at 10 a.m. PT.

The Medford stop also features the seventh and final PBA Women’s Series event of the season. Earning the top seed after Thursday’s Round of 16 was Jodi Woessner of Oregon, Ohio who finished with a 1,423 pinfall (205.86 average).

Unlike Russell, Woessner found it necessary to change to a different ball near the end of Friday’s first block.

“It was a grueling day of ups and downs,” said Woessner, who won the 2008 Lumber Liquidators Shark PBA Women’s Series Championship in December. “I made a good ball choice near the end of the first block and stayed with it in the second block.”

The top 10 qualifiers from the PBA Women’s Series Round of 16 advance to match play which will also take place on Friday. The top two qualifiers will compete in the championship round of that event during Sunday’s ESPN telecast.

The PBA Bayer Earl Anthony Medford Classic is the 11th stop on the 2008-09 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour.
