The United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships will undergo major format changes in 2010 when the event opens in a specially constructed arena setting in El Paso, Texas.

The Women's Championships, which has a history that dates to 1916, will consist of three average-based divisions named Diamond, Ruby and Sapphire, and competition will be contested using 100 percent handicap.

The Diamond Division will be made up of bowlers with averages of 180 and higher, with handicap based on 220. The Ruby Division pits bowlers with averages from 150-179 against each other, with handicap based on 180, while the Sapphire Division is for bowlers with an average of 149 and below, with handicap based on 150.

"Based on our research, these significant changes are what the bowlers in this event have been looking to see," USBC Vice President of Tournaments and Events Jack Mordini said. "These format changes, along with the special arena setting, will help usher in a new era at the Women's Championships."

The Women's Championships has undergone several divisional changes in its history but has always been based on bowlers' actual score. The current structure, which will be maintained for the 2009 event in Reno, Nev., showcases five average-based divisions.

Bowlers will still battle for scratch titles in team, doubles, singles and all-events in 2010 and will have the option of entering a special scratch prize fund.

Starting in 2010, the Women's Championships will be contested in a stadium setting. Lanes will be specially constructed inside the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center, along with state-of-the-art scoreboard displays and vendors.

The 2009 Women's Championships will be contested at the one-of-a-kind National Bowling Stadium in Reno. Entries were scheduled to close on Jan. 15 for the 2009 event, however, USBC has extended the deadline to March 9 to accommodate all bowlers who wish to enter the event.

Now this is what I would love to see in the mens - average divisions. That will even out the field. Take a few from each field to qualify for the finale tournament. This sounds like a good ideal to start.
