let me start these off, I can't afford to buy an ball spinner at the moment. I have not tried any real test with a ball. I had four plans in my mind of what I wanted to do. all with safety already thought out. plus, I like building stuff. comes from needing stuff on a tight budget.

a) was going to use an busted cheap drill press I bought and was not worth a second fight to fix. (only got 5 hours use out of it until the return spring broke and 1 hour use when the gearing on the press lever broke). when to put a new belt on it and get it together for the mod. one of the mounts on the press body breaks off. that idea is done, most of it is now scrap. (safety plan, wood box covering the belt and pulleys, plastic storage bin to catch water and cleaners)

b) had an old electric yard shredder my dad gave me. did not work too well . got it a part. went to test so see if everything would work. would not turn on. mostly scrap that too. (safety plan, a large round plastic mixing bowl to cover any exposed parts)

c) had an band saw that was giving to me by my dad as well. the pulls where worn out and would not stay on. took the motor off it. missed drill the mounting holes have to restart that project. replanning that idea. (safety plan, around 90% of the moving parts incased in the wood box I built)

d) using a drill press my wife won at an auction, ran out of time to start figuring that one out. (safety plan still in the works)

really should of just mowed, would of been more productive.

What is the quote oh yes "the best laid plans of mice and men". Well good luck a do it yourself ball spinner would be pretty cool if you can pull it off.

Some ideas for a drill press spinner:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxhC98oXKlo

Custom ball spinner! $35 drill press (brand new set at 600 rpm) flipped upside down mounted to work stand. Cut off head of large bolt, sandwich dog bowl between two large bolts. Used bike tire rubber on edge with super glue to give the grip/friction. Simply chucked up the bowl on chuck. Drill hole through top of drill press (right in middle of pulley belt) to flip over and mount to bottom of stand and then cut pole down so to not get in the way.
