weight pin backing out of bowling ball

Resurfacing a ball for a co-worker. Recreational bowler, doesnt take care of it, keeps it in the trunk, etc. Weight pin is backing out. Can I just grind it flat and resurface it? Sticking up about 1/16th of an inch.
