Real Men Bowl on Wood, World Championship ICEMAN OPEN

Hey I am footing the bill, I can call it anything I want!!

OK,,, its the second week in JUNE, The (Real Men Bowl on Wood, Iceman Championship Open) I have 6 wood, pristine lanes.

1. Lanes will be furnished by ICEMAN, with money he won from side bets at the Aslan vs ICEMAN gig!

2. All you need to bring is you best game, and balls

3. lots of cheap motels and hotels in the area that's the bowlers responsibility.

This bowling alley is one of a kind built in 1957! This will be scratch, sorry sandbaggers, and we will have singles, and team competition!
What teams will be decided when we know who, and how many are coming to the glorious small town bowling alley! I will be making my
Saturday evening trip with my wife, and two sons maybe tomorrow... I honestly can't tell you, or even put into words how much fun it is
to meet up and bowl those OLD well conditioned wood lanes! HUMMMM,, HUM!!!

I will tell the two good friends that run the alley, Chris, and Lee that this is going to HAPPEN!!

This is OLD SCHOOL BOWLING AT ITS BEST!! NO automatic scoring, you will be using the vintage 1960's Brunswick over head projector!

This bowling alley doesn't even SMELL LIKE those synthetic plastic, artificial lanes! It has the smell of a Forest, deep in the woods!!

Some of you HOT SHOT synthetic bowlers,,, lets see how good you are on the REAL DEAL! Can you 220 bowlers even hit 190 on the wood!

We will have FRESH OIL on all 6 lanes just prior to the event!

We can have any pattern we want. or the standard THS, at 34, 38 or 40 feet.... what ever we vote on!

Local small town restaurants with that home town cooking in the area,,,, Can't you smell that good food a cooking,,, hummm!

We have plenty of time to get this together! It should and could be EPIC!!

Brian above is a typical sandbagger, he looks stupid, but under the sandbag mask, he is in reality, a brain surgeon, here in Kansas City at Sands Hospital! We don't

That WOOD BE FANTASTIC!!!!! If I can help in any way let ME KNOW!! There is a whole generation of young Whippier-Snappers that don't know what wood bowling is all about!

Its sort of like the original Tennis in England on GRASS, vs the mostly used today asphalt synthetic types. Sure their are a few clay courts around town, but only at private clubs!

Wood is THE GREAT EQUALIZER!! It takes a lot more skill be bowl wood then it does synthetic! Glad your on board Storm,,, good luck with finding a place for dialysis, here in Kansas city mo. We have many great hospitals in this area!

If the good Lord is willing and the creeks don't rise to much then

on back in the day the good old wood lanes and I absolutely loved to
bowl on them.

Its only 30 miles from my place, (Close to KCI airport) they might even have a place in town,, I will check it out and get back with you! I have a GOOD friend that lives in Plattsburg. I will ask her if they have pet friendly place to stay REAL close if not in the Wonderful little town of Plattsburg!

Gene and Mary bowled up there last night with Iceman and Icewoman.

Funny some of the local Farm Boys that grew up, and some born on those lanes want a piece of the action! One went so far as to say he could not be beat in his house!!!

GREAT! I did find a Super 8 in Smithville,,, about 15 miles from Plattsburg. They are, (I am told pet friendly).

ITs a ways of till this event, so Iceman is going to let this thread rest for a while! Just keep in mind it will be happening on June the 13th!

The Aslan Vs Iceman was just a PERSONAL match, (as it stared out between Aslan and Icman), on synthetic lanes! This tournament will be on (((WOOD))), the great equalizer! I know, and have seen many bowlers with high averages bowl very poorly on these pristine wood Holy Lanes in Plattsburg. I have seen Gene bowl a 280, and Iceman a 254,,, I have also seen gene not hit 150, along with Ice!

Did I say that Elvis once bowled on these lanes while traveling through to Graceland?? Did I say the several presidents have stopped off including Nixon to throw on some wood lanes? Did I say that some very well known movie stars have stopped over for the bed and breakfast, and bowling?\
If I did say all of the above, it may or may not be absolutely true?

And I DID say you were completely insane for doing that…for the record. I don't really have the time nor funds nor motivation at THIS TIME to do much more than sort of "consider" it.

Don't get me wrong, I love bowling on wood…and it'd be fun to do this thing again…but we JUST got back from Vegas…I just got back from the Devil's toilet bowl known as Laughlin…the VBT finals are happening…I gotta miss my sport league for a few weeks to take a stupid class for work…I just started a new, more competitive house league, I'm gonna be making an arsenal change and mess with my drillings, and the holidays are staring us in the face.

I'm not saying I'm "OUT"…June is a LONG ways out…and I'd love to do it…and redeem myself…but put me down for a 2% chance at this point.

Absolutely. I'm averaging 148 in my new house league. I had NO business bowling you 4 guys scratch in Vegas but I did it because it was your birthday AND Vegas was sort of on my way to Laughlin, where I was going anyways. But I was giving up 30 pins to you, Rob, Mud, and Mike….and it showed. Now I'm giving up FIFTY because my game is GONE. So no…no thanks. Yup, I'm scared alright. I'd be a mental midget NOT to be at this point. I can't pick up a spare other than a 1-pin, 2-pin, 3-pin or 5-pin. And I'm probably only a "probably" on the 5-pin.

YOU try it!! Put the "gift" in the closet for a moment…and go out there and strike at a 16-22% rate…then add to that a spare shooting % of somewhere around 40%. See how "fun" bowling is when you're staring down a 120-130 game and actually 'happy' when you hit 160. Thats sad. You know looking back at the meeting on Sept 24th, Including our one warm up game, I had a 210 average, not bad after riding out on a bike with my wife on the back, pulling a trailer! That ONE LESSON that Rob gave us has been paying off also! I am bowing some great numbers here lately using the coaching he gave us both the day before we left Sin City! 741 last Friday,,, several 600's.... ICE is starting to come around it regards to coaching! But THE GIFT makes it all MUCH easier. SOME HAVE IT,,, ( I HATE TO SAY),,,, and some can't find it, or don't have it!

You guys post way too much. I traveled last week again and had limited internet access. So I am going to do the best I can to consolidate my post into a series of relevant and ludicrous questions:

1. Iceman please send me a specification sheet on what bowling media this tournament will be played on - not sure if it is wood or synthetic or semi-synthetic or AstroTurf or maybe Wimbledon style real grass
2. You know I'm in - do we ride in around the KC area before or after the tourney?
3. Can I bring a personal assistant who is scantily clad that will keep score for me and distract the opponents by harassing them in an inappropriate manner?
4. Can we just pass around the donation plate now and fund Aslan coming to KC? Let's just be real. The dude's got issues. Let's help a brother out.
5. Did I ask is this on wood or some other type of lane? I wasn't sure reading all these posts or the title?
6. Is Iceman going to bowl another 300 on 13JUN2015?
7. Will there be alcohol available or is it BYOB?

LOL,,,, The most important question about the Beer. YES WE can bring anything we want ourselves,,, Its going to be just like we own the place!
Food, Drinks, mixed drinks anything goes ( with the exception of any kind of drugs) (:)

On my Thursday night league, many of the guys bring their own beer, or mixed drinks, They even have a Icebox and microwave we will have access to. Food we can figure that out, they do have a pizza hut around the corner.

I ask Aslan if he wanted us to take up a collection, but he said that he was too proud to accept money, but if he starts his walk across the Midwest in March, he would get here two days before the Real men bowl on WOOD, small town bowlingboards tournament!

I say ride your FRICKEN BIKE like ICE did!!! I did it his age on a 1984 1000cc Ninja, with a belly dance on the back leaning into me all the way, 1800 miles from Kansas City to Southern CA!

If you do another 666, we just might have to dial 911!!! Are you the beast,,,, do we need a Catholic Priest, with holy water present????

Will Rob be present at this one??? (( you do know he use to be a Catholic Priest, until he fell in love with bowling, and left the church to spread the word of bowling, and teachings of bowling.

When you bowled that 666, I knew you were in trouble! Did you notice that Bible in Robs rear left pocket???? Did you see that small bottle of what looked like vodka in his other pocket,,, it was Holy Water.

You guys post way too much. I traveled last week again and had limited internet access. So I am going to do the best I can to consolidate my post into a series of relevant and ludicrous questions:

1. Iceman please send me a specification sheet on what bowling media this tournament will be played on - not sure if it is wood or synthetic or semi-synthetic or AstroTurf or maybe Wimbledon style real grass
2. You know I'm in - do we ride in around the KC area before or after the tourney?
3. Can I bring a personal assistant who is scantily clad that will keep score for me and distract the opponents by harassing them in an inappropriate manner?
4. Can we just pass around the donation plate now and fund Aslan coming to KC? Let's just be real. The dude's got issues. Let's help a brother out.
5. Did I ask is this on wood or some other type of lane? I wasn't sure reading all these posts or the title?
6. Is Iceman going to bowl another 300 on 13JUN2015?
7. Will there be alcohol available or is it BYOB?
8. Is this event catered? Or do they have a restaurant in the alley or can we call domino's for delivery?

NO ASLAN is not the whipping man! He has a pretty impressive record on WOOD LANES, and this is wood at its finest! Vintage 1957, when wood was really wood! Not the synthetic crud that's out there today!

When the chips are down on wood, he seems to rise to the occasion! But just for S&Gs...this is the approximate COST of sending Aslan to Plattsburg, MO for this epic bowling event:

So, even though BB.com has probably a million members...only about 30 of them post regularly. That is roughly $35/person. And my personal opinion is, each of you should use that $35 to get a bowling lesson and improve your game...NOT send Aslan to a Deliverance type situation where he's going to get sexually assaulted by hillbillies. Wait...I'm thinking of West Virginia. Okay, then it's more like sending Aslan to get killed in racial rioting...which is only slightly better than the fits option.

A cheaper/better option is...I stay with Iceman, he is my chaffeur during my stay..but that only saves like $178...which is just barely over what I'd GLADLY pay to not hear strange noises coming from Mr. and Mrs. Iceman's bedroom nor see Iceman doing nude Yoga or something like that.

The biggest cost is shipping 4 bowling balls. I looked at the USBC Open in El Paso and it was cheaper to drive then to fly, even at higher gas prices and having to pay for a hotel on the way there and back...because the cost of shipping bowling balls, even at the USBC discounted rate, is so absurd. If I HAD to go to Plattsburg...and I had to foot the bill...I'd just bring my Grandpa's old urethane ball and bowl with that one ball...but whats the point? I'd score in the 120s-140s with a urethane ball not drilled to fit my hand.

Ya know what...next time I practice...I'll bring the ole Columbia Blue Knight out of retirement and toss a couple games...see what happens. It WOULD be even sweeter a victory to win with my Grandpa's ball AND to walk into that tournament and beat every single participant using a 30 year old ball. Heck, Storm would probably send the Pinkertons to Plattsburg to assassinate me so the story didn't get out.

The part I like is that we can vote, and even change the oil! The friends that run the place said they would be happy to put down what ever pattern we want, even different patterns on different lanes in pairs,,, remember there is 6 lanes.

As far as staying at my place, FORGET-ABOUT-IT!!! Not-a- going - to -happen! You can come over, visit, maybe shoot some pool, play my hokey game, WII bowl or even try out my newest game I purchased today, shuffle board! JUST imagine yourself being the firs to bowl a 300 game on these beautiful wood Lanes! The wood they used for these lanes came from the enchanted forest of Sherwood England. Magic works for those that know how to unleash its powers!! Picture of my friend, yes I have a few, Gene,,, I believe he had a best game 284 that day on the lanes, while iceman only had a 254. I have had a few good games on the wood, but believe me my average is MUCH lower their then on the synthetic lanes.

Look it up. Delta Airlines baggage fees. $25 for one bag (clothes) and $200 for a 75lb checked bag containing my bowling balls. There and back = $450.

Besides, the OFFICIAL tournament is the 1st Annual Aslan vs. Iceman Challenge. That challenge was won my Mr. R. Mautner. Per the rules and by laws of that tournament...the WINNER gets to decide where the 2nd Annual Aslan vs. Iceman Challenge is to occur roughly 1 year after the 1st annual event concludes. That means, it is up to the CHAMPION to decide on a venue of HIS CHOOSING (or her should that ever come into play)...to occur sometime around late June 2015 to early January 2016.

The Plattsburg hillbilly farmer tournament is merely a SPINOFF of the REAL tournament. It's like that show "A Different World" that was a lousy spinoff of "The Cosby Show". Or how "Facts of Life" was a somewhat entertaining spinoff of "Different Strokes". It's cute and all...but there is only ONE official tournament...and ONE winner. And since that winner was NOT Iceman (he finished 4th out of 5)...Iceman doesn't really have the luxury of scheduling the next venue.

Now, even if ROB decides to placate Iceman and agree to Plattsburg...there's only 1 problem. Since Rob is the champion...and the tournament is named after me and Iceman....the by laws of said tournament state that for it to be truly official, at LEAST TWO of the 3 of us must be present. And IF Rob (the champion) WERE to choose Plattsburg...given he CHOSE it...he'd HAVE TO GO. Otherwise the champion could choose a bowling alley in Alaska just to make it impossible.

So, long story long...for Mudpuppy's benefit...the OFFICAL event is up to Rob...sometime around late September 2015ish...and at a new USBC stadium (hint hint) of HIS CHOOSING. Or, perhaps Sam's Town. Could it just be a ploy to move the venue to the midwest?

When I shot those scores, it was a time where lanes were inspected to provide integrity. Can't say the same now.

Same here Mike that is what I learned to bowl on the old wood lanes
and that is what I shot my sanctioned 300 games on and like you I fell
short on getting the sanctioned 800 series but I did get quite a few non-
sanctioned 800 series on the wooden lanes.

I'll be in Plattsburg on June 13th for sure to bowl on the wood if nothing
drastic happens between now and then I'm really looking forward to get
back on the wood lanes for a change to see if I remember how to bowl on

so you shot 300 on wood! My uncle who is just 1 year older then Ice, threw I know One for sure on wood back in the 60's! Art Malone, got the ring and all the goodies that go with it! I really believe Iceman could roll a 300 on wood, I just need some time,,, remember this, its much HARDER to bowl a 300 in Plattsburg then it was on the lanes your bowled for your 300! They do have the USBC inspect their lanes, and certify them each year.

I actually looked at that but the ticket was a bit higher on Southwest. And I don't think with my 4-ball roller that I can split it in two and have both be under 50lb. Maybe though. I'd have to see if both bags disconnect from the roller part. I know the top one does. But the ticket on Southwest would have been about $270 more. So if I could manage all 6 balls like you did...that brings the total cost down $180.

I think this would be a FIRST in regards to a tournament on a 6 lane wooden alley! For some of you techno guys that recognize this oil machine, I am not sure of all the possibilities

Probably the only FAIR way to do the 3 patterns would be all six lanes oiled with the same pattern, have our 3 games, then a break while Chris and Lee put down the second pattern,,,, bowl 3 games, then the final pattern and bowl 3 games.

ICE is open to what ever pattern we all decide to use.

The important thing is I need to know how many are going to TAKE UP this Challenge! Remember I am taking care of this whole tournament in regards to renting the alley!

You would just need to find a way out here, and lodging!

June 13th is a long ways off, but it will be here before you know it.

If I find out there is a lack of interest, I will still rent the place, so NO Big Deal! My boys birthdays are June, July and August, it will be their birthday present.

I am open to the idea, ((((as much as I hate it grrrrr))))) of using a handicap based on best average of 2013-14.

Don't call it a challenge, and then put out easy red patterns.

A simple thing to do is make each lane flat oil, and make each lane a different length.

Lane 1 50 feet
Lane 2 45 feet
Lane 3 42 feet
Lane 4 36 feet
Lane 5 30 feet

I am open to the idea, ((((as much as I hate it grrrrr))))) of using a handicap based on best average of 2013-14.



The normal way of determining an average is the highest with 21 games or more.

If you just take highest, VDubx is totally screwed, his 800 was as a sub, so his highest average is something like 268 for 3 games.

A better way is to take the composite average. The sample size for many people goes up significantly.

I am a little confused by all the rules and back room deals that went on to do the first tournament in Vegas. I have a problem with rules and authority in general so rescind my rights, likeness and/or participation in anything remotely related to this make the rules up as you go tourney. My future participation will be as a free spirit not attached to the institution or the governing policies. Therefore my thoughts are:

1. LET'S GET IT ON with this Iceman has a woody tournament. Throw some corn fields, cheap strippers, sheep and an adult book store in we got us a real down home redneck midwest party.

When the "official" part II of Vegas is announced by Rob, the deserving champion, I will gladly take part in that too, if it is within my means and Aslan doesn't book my travel because I can't afford his type of VIP overpriced travel accommodations - I didn't pay $1,054 to go from DTW-LAS or anywhere close.

You're only bowling for a few years is actually an advantage to you.

You are currently bowling on the same condition you learned on.

Most of what I worked hard to achieve, has been made obsolete due to oil patterns, and bowling balls.

I've been able to average 200+ without adapting my game.

To go higher, I need to adapt to this new form of the game.

I'm in the process of changing my walk, swing, release to be able to take advantage of modern conditions.

Unlearning how to release the ball is not an easy task.

It isn't the device that puts down the oil that makes the difference.

It's how easy the oil pattern that is put down, that does.

Putting down an easy pattern can be done with either method, the mop just takes more lineman skill to execute.

Now…Ice/Mud DID have a distinct advantage. Lefty/Righty!!! Uh oh…Ice missed leaves a 10-pin….no problem, Mudpuppy picks it up. Oh no, Mud leaves a 7-pin…no prob…Ice picks it up. They lost DESPITE that advantage!!

I think the key was Rob beating Mudpuppy in the finals. Mudpuppy was visually rattled and destroyed after bowling so well and then pooping the bed in the finals. Then he had to do scotch doubles which I think took him out of his rhythm.

Vegas was Vegas!! This will be a tournament that has never been attempted in the history of bowling! 6 beautiful WOOD Lanes, dressed the way we want each pair.

I am tempted to keep the number down to no more then 10! Why not a rematch of Vegas, plus one extra bowlier,,, 12 at the most!

One pair of lanes Mop oil laid down by an EXPERT of that ART, for HARD CORE BOWLERS, LIKE Myself and Mikeie!

Consistency of the oil isn't the goal.

The goal is to have a pattern that doesn't provide help to guide the ball towards the pocket.

All that is needed is a decent amount of oil in the first 20 feet, and clean back ends.

Wood, without a doubt is much more challenging then synthetic! Have brought some high rollers up to Plattsburg and they also struggled a bunch!
They change the pattern almost every week, some form of the THS, but different lengths, and styles. White, Blue and Red!

These Farm Boys are not cry babies complaining about the oil not being "BLOCKED PERFECT" each week, like many synthetic types I have bowled with!

These Farm boys, I have the honor to bowl with want, and live for a CHALLAGNE... its in their BLOOL LINE!

Had a high series for these tough lanes last night on league, 222, 167, and final game of 212. 601 left a solid hit 8 pin first shot of the 10 frame, 3rd game was hoping for a 233! Middle game started losing carry,,, to slow to adjust, but did work it out in the 3rd game. Used the Dealdly Aim, the whole series.

Wait...what? Were those sentences supposed to go together or was there a cutting/pasting error.

Usually, "tough lanes" is followed by "I rolled really well but only bowled a 'insert low score'". Or, "the lanes seemed easy and I bowled a 'insert high score'!"

But Icegod's post didn't make sense. Somehow there are farmers and a mop...I get that. And Ice likes that one (and only one) PBAer uses his same method of spare shooting. I'm sure the other 99.6% of the PBA is just unaware or maybe Norm has some type of trademark in place.

But I don't understand how if the conditions are so TOUGH...how ICEMAN scored HIGH!???

Ice...what ya have to understand about wood/high friction/dry lanes....is that when "high rollers" struggle...it's simply that they aren't used to it. The same way high rollers USED TO high friction struggle with wetter/slicker conditions. Mr. White is a perfect example of this as is the old pro at the old wood center I bowled at.

MWhite needs LESS friction because he has a high rev rate. He can't use weaker equipment...he's already throwing a "Mix" and a plastic ball. My old pro...he threw more high loft/speed dominant. So he needed MORE friction so his ball would actually move. And he was already throwing fairly strong equipment...and chasing stronger equipment is tough because the ball may tend to hook sooner or "roll out" rather than hook "more".

So yes, on beat up wood lanes...just before they got tore out...I beat Mr. White. But I NEVER beat my old pro...not on wood lanes. But, in Vegas...Mike beat BOTH of us! And my old pro in Vegas...we both bowled in the 130s and I think I bowled a couple pins better that game.

So does that mean Mike and the pro and me and, I guess you (since Mike beat you in Vegas) are equally bad? Or equally good?

Mike crushes me in the sport league every week. But...I usually can take a game...near the end...when the lanes break down. Suddenly Mike's ball starts to move too much or too unpredicatbly...and suddenly my ball starts to take a better turn/angle into the pocket.

Does that make me better than Mike? I doubt it. I think he averages 180 in that league and I'm struggling to break 150. It 'just' means that in bowling...everyone is vulnerable...when their ideal game changes. The Pros (PBA) can adapt. But even they each have certain patterns they do better on than others.

It's why I framed the Virtual Bowling Tour Part I the way I did:

1) -10-pin deduction for home center
2) random bowling center assignments

Do you know how long that lasted? < 1 month and nearly everyone threatened to quit if they couldn't pick their own centers. And it WASN'T about distance or gas prices or time or safety or crime or any of the 30+ excuses I heard. It was SIMPLY...bowlers have fragile egos...and they HATE when they go into a center and bowl badly. Mike purposely picked centers just to AVOID a physical pairing...not because he was intimidated or anti-social...he just wanted COMPLETE control over the lane conditions.

THE AVI Challenge was in Vegas. I STATED BEFOREHAND...that Rob M. would have an advantage because he's bowled those lanes. Mudpuppy and Iceman and MWhite may have a higher average...and Mudpuppy and I may be younger...but that was HIS HOME TURF. And who won? Rob. In spectacular and awesome and inspiring fashion. And I'm not trying to take away from that. But I BEAT MWHite (bad) on my home wood lanes. Rob beat all of us on his home lanes.

Homefield advantage in bowling is HUGE. You lost in Vegas...now you want a separate tournament/Challenge/Tournament on YOUR home lanes. I don't blame ya! And is Mike "afraid"? Maybe. Maybe a little. He sure didn't do well last time he took that challenge. I'd say he's more apprehensive about the 9-hour drive there and back and having to close his business for a week. I'd LOVE to go. I'll never turn down bowling...bad bowling beats anything else I could be doing. But $1000? Ughhhhh....I'm not a "no"...but ughhh....

I think at this point...I'm more interested in where the AVI Challenge II is going to be. Rob M. won...and to the victor...goes the spoils. The venue for AVI Challenge II...is up to him. I'm sure he'll pick an alley in Vegas (Red Rock was nice!!!...but Iceman almost fell and died there...so not sure if he'll go back...but man, that was a NICE place!! We need to get some sponsors...get that "private lane action") but thats okay. Ya want it in Detroit or Kansas City or Riverside or Anaheim...next time BEAT ROB!!!

Well I sort of feel accomplished, typically I tend to steer away from posts that involve ICEGOD and AsLan when the involve any of the following topics: Slightly "outdated"/undrilled equipment, wood lanes, 2 handed bowling, the Deadly Aim, Fruit, Godliness, and a host of other topics, but I decided to grind through the 11 pages of posts to hear about this Lumberjack open (rather than work for the rest of this Friday).

I am happy to see that there is still an interest in bowling on the old school condition and I am sad that I can't make it, but that may make my opinion on the oil conditions a little better since I have no stake in this fight.

1. Pairs probably should have the same pattern, giving individual lanes different patterns may take away from the event - there should be enough challenge with the lanes that each frame should not need an intentionally different shot (obviously mop and/or spray bottle application would achieve difference to a degree).
2. For the experience aspect different patterns may be nice, short oil (where you could also limit equipment usage to plastic/rubber or some similar restriction to make it even more like the good ole days), a THS (so that you can see the difficulty and shot different from synthetic), and a flat pattern (which is typically one of the most difficult "fair" patterns).

turning into a GOD here lately has taken me to another level.... things are much more clear to me now in regards to everything related to bowling!!

I really think if I would have made it past Lucky Rob that game where he bowled a 227, and I bowled a 224, (((ICEMAN would have come home the champ)))! That, again after 1400 miles of ridding a bike, with my wife, and trailer behind me and 4 bowling balls...at 66 fricken years of age!!

What happened one day, with only 4 games means NOTHING! Just who was the best at the particular moment in time!

Go Mopped ths (usually a 9/10-1 ratio), something like a sunset strip or beaten path (3/4-1 ratio), and Bear (flat pattern)

I thought the WTBA Beijing was the hardest pattern I've bowled on thus far. I've never bowled on the Badger or Bear, but I didn't think the Wolf was that bad.

But with my straighter style...the pattern differences don't matter as much. It's the high rev cranker/power players that struggle on shorter patterns.

Iceman is a straighter player, so he won't notice much difference (I presume). The patterns are shorter, but they also tend to be flatter...with more oil volume. So a straighter, stroker is going to notice the ball hooks later...but theoretically it'll have more energy when it does...thus similar results to a THS.

The biggest challenge for me on sport patterns isn't the pattern itself...I can make slight adjustments for longer and shorter patterns...it's the room for error. If you're an "area" player (aiming for an area rather than a board)...they can be really tough because a slight miss of maybe a board one way or the other can produce bad results. And thats not the case on most house shots. Even tough house shots have a couple boards on either side of the ideal line.

He doesn't really want tough lanes, he just wants to sound tough, but still have the THS, so it will control the modern ball for him.

The mop sounds like it could be tough, but a skilled application of oil can be just as easy as a machine applied THS.

What does Iceboy need to do.... how about at least once in your life bowl a high score without the help from a resin bowling ball, or the help of a THS lane condition.

If you had a high score on a THS but without a resin ball I'd be impressed.
A high score with a resin ball but not on a THS is respectable.
Both Resin and THS is meaningless.

I've managed 250's and 260's on sport conditions with resin, but to do so, I had to use a weak release.

You claim that you averaged 210 in Vegas, but the facts don't seem to back that up.

You had 598 in qualifying, and a 224 the game after totaling 822 for 4 games. Thats about 205.

The qualifying and the first two games of rolloff were on lanes 1 and 2.

Games 3 and 4 were moved to lanes 63 and 64, where we had no practice.

Also Rob had an advantage in that he didn't have to sit out while others bowled.

You had to sit out one game, but you got to bowl on the same pair as qualifying.

I had to both sit out two games, and bowl on a different pair with no warmup.

Mud had to sit out three games, and bowl on a different pair with no warmup.

To be complete I'd like to see what the scores were from the warmup game before qualifying, but they don't appear to be documented here.

Well you can't because you've never been required to learn how to roll the ball.

Resin balls will put the ball into a roll for you, as long as there is clean back ends.

Lets see, you qualified with a score of 598, and a rolloff score of 224. Thats 4 games there. but that's only 205.

If your warmup game was enough to get you to 210 for 4 games (I assume you mean warmup + 3 qualifying) your warmup game would need to be 242, which I'm pretty sure you did not achieve.

If however you mean you averaged 210 for 5 games, including the warmup, and the rolloff, your warmup would need to be 228, which again, I don't think you achieved.

What I do remember is for the 4 games (warmup + qualifying) I had 840, and Mud had 844, but no memory of what you, Rob, and Aslan had.

From my memory, either you or Rob shot 222 the warmup game leaving me room to strike out for 225 to be high, which I did.

CARRY,,, I watch the demo videos that Bowlingball com shows on this site, and I notice that when that Curly guy throws his low speed ball delivery, the PINS STAY LOW and carry!

I have see some pretty good 220 bowlers around here that have high speed, and revs that that when some of them start having problems it that the pins are flying high off the deck, and not staying LOW where they can do more damage, in other words poor carry.

I would think that speed can be detrimental to good carry in many cases, where as when watching Curly throw his balls he actually keeps the
pins close to the deck as they bounce off one another!

maybe there actually is a PERFECT SPEED for good carry, along with all the other things needed!

Due to lack of interest I have decided to cancel the tournament! I have decided to keep the rental time that I reserved, and have a 3 in one birthday Party for my sons. They were born, Oldest Son Mike June, second son Pete, July, and youngest son Nick, August.

Funny for all you into math, If you add the first two sons birth dates, June 14, and July15, you get the youngest sons birthday August 29.
Anyway instead of gifts, I am going to have the lanes open to all the families and relatives on all sides of the families to come bowl. We can bring all the refreshments drinks ect we want. It’s a great place for a family celebration!

I think it will be a blast,,, grandma’s, and Grandpa’s, young kids, the whole ball of wax! Shoes and balls are furnished for anyone that needs them.
It came to me in a dream,,,, Yes even GOD’S have dreams, of a celestial type. If it turns out FUN, I plan on doing it EVERY YEAR!
I do highly recommend anyone that wants to bowl some great wood lanes to come check out this historic alley that many Great Bowling legions, thought about bowling at!

I am a GOD! kitty Cat...... Just wished, the new and improved bowler I am, could have gotten my hands on you ONE MORE TIME, just for KICK's!!! I can see it now: Old broken down X Iron Worker, with one lesson, kicks 40 year olds butt, up one side, and down the other, on 3 different wood oil patterns. hummm hum.... I really think Mike White would have been easy picking on the wood! But not to be,,, Remember, I have Two, 300 games, both within 6 months! Also just ended my seniors league that started in September, did get high scratch game trophy, ( I now in my few years bowling, having started at age 63 ) , have won that trophy 3 times in a role.

Not to downgrade bike week or talk bad about it - just not my scene. Chrome fest with Harleys from what I hear. Lots of just parking lot pimping. I prefer to just ride and skip the whole my bike (and other things) are bigger than yours. Now if we could just plan a week to bowl and take a ride to the Keys or something I would be hip to that. It’s been one hell of a task, listening, and guiding many of you with your journeys trying to learn who to get “more revolutions, better scores, and what Magic Ball to buy, that will give you that 300, 800 game. I must say I have aged well, still riding my bike and traveling all over this bowling alley laden country.

Just got back from the Rosewell New Mexico thing, over the 4th of july! It was one of those out of this this world experiences.
Why do I have this need to have a rematch between mere mortals, after bowling with the god’s since.

The Wood lanes of Plattsburg have been sanded, and reconditioned, and checked for certification by the Local chapter that does that her in Plattsburg Missouri! I tried them out last Saturday, and WOW! What a huge difference it makes after a reconditioning .

I ask again,,, WHO among you are willing to bowl against ME here on the ancient biblical lanes, where the Gods come to bowl,,,,, REAL BOWLING on Wood Lanes, not synthetic crap! Who has the courage to jump on their bikes, ride their horses, hitch hike the miles to try their luck bowling a God!

I rolled several 200 games on my FIRST try after the reconditioning…. I must say the difference is night and day from what they were last fall. ( the games were low 200's, but I am looking forward to some real good scores on the wood this fall)

Who has the courage, money, and guts to take on a GOD! I have morphed into something legends could be made of. I want a rematch sometime in September… beating the kitty cat, Aslan ONCE …. Was not enough! I will be 67 this September,,,, a year older, and in many respects an even more Almighty Bowling God!

It’s been one hell of a task, listening, and guiding many of you with your journeys trying to learn who to get “more revolutions, better scores, and what Magic Ball to buy, that will give you that 300, 800 game. I must say I have aged well, still riding my bike and traveling all over this bowling alley laden country.

Just got back from the Rosewell New Mexico thing, over the 4th of july! It was one of those out of this this world experiences.
Why do I have this need to have a rematch between mere mortals, after bowling with the god’s since.

The Wood lanes of Plattsburg have been sanded, and reconditioned, and checked for certification by the Local chapter that does that her in Plattsburg Missouri! I tried them out last Saturday, and WOW! What a huge difference it makes after a reconditioning .

I ask again,,, WHO among you are willing to bowl against ME here on the ancient biblical lanes, where the Gods come to bowl,,,,, REAL BOWLING on Wood Lanes, not synthetic crap! Who has the courage to jump on their bikes, ride their horses, hitch hike the miles to try their luck bowling a God!
I'm gonna guess the number of challengers that will attend is close to zero. Maybe 1. And it should not be taken personally. If the question was, "Who would LIKE to come to some Podunk town in the middle of nowhere to bowl against Iceman on some crazy 6-lane house that his nephew's dad's friend runs and sells tackle/bait out the back...I think there might be a lot of "I'd Like to!!" BUT...what we like...and what we actually CAN do...often times...very different things. I'd like Diana Zavtajlova (which I can't spell) to dump that nerdy looking Dave Wodka, move away from that absurd "Beavertown, OH"...and move in with me...to be my lover, friend, bowling coach, and maid...in that order of importance. That's what I WANT....what I CAN GET...is an overweight homeless woman who for $120 will do things in exchange for money she can use to buy drugs. See how there's a wide GAP in terms of "wants" vs "cans"? Believe me....nobody is more upset about it than me!!


I rolled several 200 games on my FIRST try after the reconditioning…. I must say the difference is night and day from what they were last fall. ( the games were low 200's, but I am looking forward to some real good scores on the wood this fall)
Realize, Iceman is Amish so it takes 15 frames to equal 200.

I'm gonna guess nobody. I have the courage and guts....but not the money nor vacation time. Plus, I've seen the "God" in action...and VDub you are NOT!! I mean, If I can take down MWhite in both the 1st annual AND 2nd annual AVZBHMSCI...then beating Iceman isn't gonna be a problem. I went easy on him last time because I wanted Rob to win...and besides...what kinda person humiliates a man on his birthday?? It just didn't seem right. :cool: I just waited till the next day, with Rob as a witness, and not only destroyed him at Red Rock...but nearly killed him (he took a terrible tumble...kinda like when MWhite stuck on the approach at the 2AAVZBHMSCI and took a figure skater nosedive...except with Iceman's 66-year-old bones....it was more serious....very touch and go for a few seconds. Hard to get an ambulance in Vegas with all the people being treated for alcohol poisoning. But, fortunately, he survived.


I have morphed into something legends could be made of.
Key word 'could'. Legends 'could' be made of that just like kids 'could' be made of sugar and spice and everything nice. But INSTEAD...you're made of brittle bones and have shown a rather thin skin. I assume you are also held together by chewing gum, peanut butter, and hemp...but that's just a guess. The only thing "legendary" I see is that by disappearing for however many months...you BECAME a legend...because you weren't here.



I want a rematch sometime in September… beating the kitty cat, Aslan ONCE …. Was not enough! I will be 67 this September,,,, a year older, and in many respects an even more Almighty Bowling God!

Well, Sauron (my new name for Iceman)...due to a recent change in family situation...my lovely daughter has moved to Iowa to live with her mother. I spent up most of my vacation time spending time with her over the summer. That leaves me with virtually no vacation time left for such adventures. BUT...there IS a possibility that I will be moving to the Des Moines area...as soon as next year...as late as 2018...or maybe never. That's still up in the air a bit. BUT....if I DID make that horrible move from sunny California to the middle of the country or as I like to call it...America's fat roll...I would be a mere 3 hours away. Certainly within STRIKEing distance (pun intended!). The trick will be you staying alive long enough...so..stay fit, eat healthy, be as stress-free as possible...because as a man...we tend to wear out at about 74 years. Bowling/Golf/Bicycling/etc.. tend to be activities that start disappearing a few years before The End...so that gives me about 4 years to make the move. Or...maybe I come into some money...then I just fly out to Dirtsville/ElmurFuddland...land at the nearest airport...find some local with a donkey to give me a ride over...and BAMM...IT'S ON!!


I must WARN you! My game is not what it used to be when I was a mere mortal……
I think we've ALL improved a bit since last you graced us with your presence.

I have unfinished business with Mike White, and that coach, what’s his name, Roberto??? Hopefully any and all my biker buddies will show up too!

I'm out until at the earliest next year. I have two vacation days left and need them. I was only able to do it the first time because I was going to Laughlin anyways so I just swung by Vegas on the way. Plus...Vegas is a 3.5 hour drive away (actually more like 5-21 hours depending on traffic). :mad:

I thought about letting MWhite win the 2ABHMAVZSCI after he fell down...but I figured he'd learn more from the defeat so I kept the pressure on him. But it's unlikely, especially at your advanced age and condition that you could now defeat Aslan. You're like Darth Vadar...sure, you can beat the crap out of Luke Skywalker in Episode V when he just learned how to use a lightsaber and was trying to fight you in a wind tunnel. But later....in episode VI....no. Or a more appropriate Star Wars analogy...Count Dooku. Sure...he cuts off Anakin's hand in Episode II...but then Anakin easily defeats him at the start of Episode III. The Star Wars history doesn't lie Iceman. You're like Mark Roth trying to beat Sean Rash. Roth is one of the all-time greats...like Iceman...but his was a different time.

I predicted your return. I disagreed with your departure. But if you're going to recruit for a tournament...and build up support to get people out there...you're gonna have to stick around for awhile. I think you'll eventually realize your dream tournament. But not this year. I think (and this is my opinion only...I speak for only myself) that people need to have their FAITH in this GOD restored. Gods aren't supposed to just 'leave' when someone calls them a doo-doo-head. These people, a lot of them new and unfamiliar with the Sauron-like IceGod....only knowing "of" him...these people need to know you're back...for good. I mean, if not...people could show up to Plattsburg for this thing...you get a hot beverage that morning...the girl only puts 7 marshmellows in your cocoa instead of 8...and you end up curled into a ball in your closet crying uncontrollably...unable to bowl. "Real" bowling happens on any lanes that are certified for use by USBC/ABC/YABA/etc. Technology should be embraced, not discounted as it will not be going away. Wood lanes on the other hand, are mostly a thing of the past. I know you are going to disagree, and that's perfectly okay to have your own opinion.

Having bowled on wood lanes often in the past I can honestly say the sound of the ball on the lane is the only part I really miss. Even when they resurfaced them they would only do so many at a time so we would end up with a 1/3 good lanes and they rest scrappy. In a couple of houses you can still see the original wood lanes, they re-purposed them as counter tops !

Apparently some of our newer members have either not been experienced with or perhaps have forgotten the posts from the past.

If Iceman stays....and the Aslan vs. Iceman struggle is re-invigorated...be prepared for a GREAT deal of content that to the average person would seem to be extremely lengthy and devoid of actual content.

If he stays...you're in for a WORLD of entertainment...with a little annoyance sprinkled in.

Is he going to stick around??? Hard to say. He WANTS to. I had my doubts...but have always said, he'd be back. He NEEDS an outlet...just like I NEED an outlet. Pride and perceived Principle 'may' keep him in solitude for awhile. But he can't stay away forever. He's the only bowlingboards.com "Bowling God" for a reason. Bowl1820 runs the site and has what, 1800 posts? Amyers is the sites most active poster in recent history...taking my spot....and he's almost at 2000. IMAGINE what it takes to eclipse 5000 posts. Many of which MIND YOU....were 4000-8000 words...whatever the word limit...he's exceeded it MULTIPLE times...as have I. Whats that...about 2 MILLION words? Even if we aim more conservatively...200,000 words?

This is why losing Iceman was a spear through the heart of the site. Yes...he's kinda crazy. Yes, he's a little out there. No, he's not as smart or good looking or generally as awesome as Aslan. All of that is true and well known. BUT...he has pizzazz. And he has time. And he has interest. And...he's entertaining. It takes a 'special' person to do what Iceman and I do. And yes, 'special' might = mental in some cases. 'Might'. But how boring would it be without us? And Iceman is the Batman to my Joker. What is Lex Luthor without Superman? What would Bullwinkle do if nobody was tying women to railroad tracks (#truewaronwomen)? Without Iceman...I'm just a boring guy posting my boring scores. I'm like if Lex Luthor lost superman and took a job running a casino. Sure...he's still evil...and taking people's money...but it's not as 'fun'.

So...here's to Iceman's return! It won't always make sense...it won't always be pretty...and many of the bowling intel folks will likely need Bowl1820 to relax the limit on emogicons (at least the rolling eyes one)...but it won't be dull. And for people like me and Ice...there's just nothing quite as bad as being bored.

No need to check the nursing homes for THE ICE MAN,,,, a man that took up bowling at age 62, after retiring form Iron Work, putting up skyscrapers, Towers, and bridges.... I rolled Two 300 games,,,, within 6 months, the last one with a 782 series a while back. Having been an Iron Worker, I looked death in the eye on a daily bases putting up skyscrapers, connecting the IRON. Its that Cat like balance, and focus, that gives me an EDGE on normal people like you.

I have had many, and the GOD's know, almost 300 games since,,, 279's, 280's,, even a 298 I do have my off days mainly because of lane conditions, and crappy oil do to malfunctioning oil machines. Its NEVER THE ICEMAN! That's what screws up my average.

I do have Feeling Tony, and when you type things about ICEMAN THE GOD, it hurts beyond what you could even imagine!

I'm gonna guess the number of challengers that will attend is close to zero. Maybe 1. And it should not be taken personally. If the question was, "Who would LIKE to come to some Podunk town in the middle of nowhere to bowl against Iceman on some crazy 6-lane house that his nephew's dad's friend runs and sells tackle/bait out the back...I think there might be a lot of "I'd Like to!!" BUT...what we like...and what we actually CAN do...often times...very different things. I'd like Diana Zavtajlova (which I can't spell) to dump that nerdy looking Dave Wodka, move away from that absurd "Beavertown, OH"...and move in with me...to be my lover, friend, bowling coach, and maid...in that order of importance. That's what I WANT....what I CAN GET...is an overweight homeless woman who for $120 will do things in exchange for money she can use to buy drugs. See how there's a wide GAP in terms of "wants" vs "cans"? Believe me....nobody is more upset about it than me!!

I'm gonna guess nobody. I have the courage and guts....but not the money nor vacation time. Plus, I've seen the "God" in action...and VDub you are NOT!! I mean, If I can take down MWhite in both the 1st annual AND 2nd annual AVZBHMSCI...then beating Iceman isn't gonna be a problem. I went easy on him last time because I wanted Rob to win...and besides...what kinda person humiliates a man on his birthday?? It just didn't seem right. :cool: I just waited till the next day, with Rob as a witness, and not only destroyed him at Red Rock...but nearly killed him (he took a terrible tumble...kinda like when MWhite stuck on the approach at the 2AAVZBHMSCI and took a figure skater nosedive...except with Iceman's 66-year-old bones....it was more serious....very touch and go for a few seconds. Hard to get an ambulance in Vegas with all the people being treated for alcohol poisoning. But, fortunately, he survived.


Key word 'could'. Legends 'could' be made of that just like kids 'could' be made of sugar and spice and everything nice. But INSTEAD...you're made of brittle bones and have shown a rather thin skin. I assume you are also held together by chewing gum, peanut butter, and hemp...but that's just a guess. The only thing "legendary" I see is that by disappearing for however many months...you BECAME a legend...because you weren't here.



Well, Sauron (my new name for Iceman)...due to a recent change in family situation...my lovely daughter has moved to Iowa to live with her mother. I spent up most of my vacation time spending time with her over the summer. That leaves me with virtually no vacation time left for such adventures. BUT...there IS a possibility that I will be moving to the Des Moines area...as soon as next year...as late as 2018...or maybe never. That's still up in the air a bit. BUT....if I DID make that horrible move from sunny California to the middle of the country or as I like to call it...America's fat roll...I would be a mere 3 hours away. Certainly within STRIKEing distance (pun intended!). The trick will be you staying alive long enough...so..stay fit, eat healthy, be as stress-free as possible...because as a man...we tend to wear out at about 74 years. Bowling/Golf/Bicycling/etc.. tend to be activities that start disappearing a few years before The End...so that gives me about 4 years to make the move. Or...maybe I come into some money...then I just fly out to Dirtsville/ElmurFuddland...land at the nearest airport...find some local with a donkey to give me a ride over...and BAMM...IT'S ON!!


I think we've ALL improved a bit since last you graced us with your presence.



I'm out until at the earliest next year. I have two vacation days left and need them. I was only able to do it the first time because I was going to Laughlin anyways so I just swung by Vegas on the way. Plus...Vegas is a 3.5 hour drive away (actually more like 5-21 hours depending on traffic). :mad:

I predicted your return. I disagreed with your departure. But if you're going to recruit for a tournament...and build up support to get people out there...you're gonna have to stick around for awhile. I think you'll eventually realize your dream tournament. Above all he knows I am not just an average normal person and he has not had to rescue me from sky scrapers or tall tree's .... as I have yet to make a fatal mistake.

I will consider whipping you in a 3 game series, but you will have none of my prayers to answer as I have a direct fiber connection to the God Icloud.....and it's not in the KC area or even close.

I am an expert at diagnosing problems and finding solutions and I still maintain a cocktail of anti-psychotic drugs and some intensive therapy will help your condition .....but you will probably never be back to normal, if you ever were.

BTW, Maple is for baseball bats, God created synthetic lanes to save it for where it's really needed.

Mike, man that is still a mere mortal, I will reply to your sarcastic sentence. The lanes were pretty beat up, it was the end of their 3 year life expectancy! They just resurfaced the lanes, and they are PERFECT,,, now. Tried them out last week, had a much more stable roll, and several low 200's...

They also put a different pattern down every week last season ,,,, sometimes a long 42, sometimes a short pattern, we never knew what pattern or length till the day of.

That added to the fact that it needed to be refinished.......

This year I will start posting my fantastic series/games. Why bother to post average crap....

I have this ability to FLY with the eagles, or sink to the lower levels of the ocean.

I have been ask Bowling God,,, how can you Bowl a 300, with a 782 series, and then bowl a 486.

My reply is always, **** happens!!

Just ordered this ball today for the wood lanes, I think it will be a GREAT MATCH up! Will be my first Urethane ball.

Took the 37 mile trip to bowl the new wood lanes last night in Plattsburg, with Gene and Mary. We had a blast! Remember the open bowling is only on Friday and Saturday from 6pm to 10pm, (or when even if were having fun).

We had a great time.... Wood is ,,, SPECIAL! Looking forward to league starting next Thursday the 19th. With the new finish, hoping to get that long awaited 700 on wood.

Been there and done it on synthetic, but last season no 700's, on that league with some pretty damn good bowlers.

As I have mentioned before their is no house shot per-say, they change the pattern each week! We never know what to expect, which makes it a lot of fun, trying to figure it out.

What are the odds, that the other lanes, Gladstone, also lost their ace mechanic, (he purchased a bowing alley in Excelsior Springs Missouri, 24 lanes). The new guy that took his place does not know how to maintain the oil machine, and LOTS of complaints! My average dropped around 20 pins, along with a many others. Oil, and correct application and matanince of the machine is a big deal when it comes to bowling, IMHA.

I hope to get it back up in the 195/200 area again this fall.

It's funny,,, I can do a 300, even a 780 series on league, or I can do a low,,,, LOW,, 500 series... LOL,,, I never know is going to show up, Mike the Bowling God, or Mike the mere mortal! And,,,, that's ok,,, I love to bowl, The GOOD, The BAD, and the UGLY!!

On any given day I can have a GREAT SERIES,,, 600's, high 600's, 700's, even high 700's, my highest being the 780 with that

Why in the heck I am not consistent is KILLING ME! I would give all my awards for a 220 league average. My highest has been only a 200, and that was a few years ago.

Sure I stared late at 62, didn't have the time to bowl much during my Iron Working years, traveling around the country putting up buildings, towers, bridges, 66, now!

What does it take to be consistent!!!!!

Sure their has been lots of talk about the lane conditions at all 3 of the houses I bowl at.

But I think it me,,, not adjusting!

One week a while back had a low 700 score, next week same league a low 500. I would like to say its focus, but I can't.

Anyone else have the HIGH GAMES and series, then turn around and bowl ICE COLD, the following week? iceman

Are you agreeing that knowledge can ruin a good thing? Remember my VERY FIRST year bowing a league at 62, had a 298, have the trophy on that mantle place as proof.... ( NO coaching, didn't know squat, other then just common sense related to angles).

Bowing is a game of angle, speed, drilling, and coverstock. I had geometry, 101, in school, and it indirectly along with physics, is the game of bowling in a nut shell!

BUT THE more I read about and watch instructional videos, the more erratic my game has become, thus the dropping of my averages. Super good games and series on some days, and ones I don't even want to talk about on others.

I like to blame the oil, but in the old days when I didn't know squat, I don't remember having the swings I am having NOW.

In the old days I had ONE BOLWING BALL, and made adjustments based on plain geometry!

NOW I HAVE 6 FRICKEN balls to jump around with when things aren't quit right on the lanes,,,, did I say 6 balls, in my bowling room, (ICEMAN"S Pro SHOP) I have 18 balls at this moment, with two recent purchases.

I even have the innovative ball spinner two speed, with the recycle water system.

I wonder how many out there have the same problem Iceman has,,,, ( consistency ) Plain and simple! TOO MANY BALLS, and way too much information!


I honestly think: THE REAL PROBLEM ASLAN has.... he is a deep thinker like ICE, but we can't HELP IT! It's in our DNA to analyze, and think outside of the box, in the box and around the box, too much knowledge, too many balls, and need of a dame!

He too has way to many balls, and thinks too much! Aslan just might have everything else, it takes to be a great bowler, (minus a hot chick)!

I do think if he finds a hot trashy chick, that's not too bright, has a great body, that gives him all he needs, (which isn't much other then carnal love making), his game might progress to levels higher then he even imagined. Some eye candy to take his mind off of the game of bowling, (while bowling). Does that make sense?

Are Ice, and Aslan pea's out of the same pod..... other then me being more gifted, having a woman, and better looking?

I wonder how many out there have the same problem Iceman has,,,, ( consistency ) Plain and simple! TOO MANY BALLS, and way too much information!
Myself for one I have 9 bowling balls at the lanes to pick from and
a few more here at home to choose from. Here lately I might shoot
a 700 series one week and come back and shoot a 450 series or less
the very next week and then a 550 to 650 series the next week.

But in my defense we do have a lane man that just doesn't care any
more from week to week if the lanes are done right or not as he is
looking for another job anyway and just doesn't care if you have any
oil on the lanes or not.

On the week(s) that he does oil them right I'll shoot a decent series
and then the next if he doesn't feel like doing them correctly I'll have
a bad series even though I try to adjust to them. It is kind of hard to
adjust to bone dry Sahara Desert dry lanes as all of my equipment is
set up for medium to heavy oil at the moment.

I bowled for many years with no spare ball, just a single ball and most of the guys in the league did as well. A bunch averaged 200 plus, and I'm talking just a couple of years ago ! When there are too many balls to choose from, picking the right one for ME, is as elusive as winning the lottery.... one of the guys I bowl with often tells people stop thinking so much about it, and just go up there and throw the ball ! He has averaged over 200 for the last 8 years throwing the same one ball, one of the Inferno series. I am trading him a Vintage Gold Rhino Pro for beer, I'm interested to see how he does with that ball. I doubt he will ever get a spare ball....but maybe if I start beating him on a regular basis he might think about it !

Bowled today on one open lane at Gladstone, with my new Red-Tank, Motiv , urethane ball. I was VERY SURPRISED at the movement! A very nice well defined ark to the pocket,, 247 best game, with it. I thought it would be a lot like a plastic ball,,, Worked great on ten pin leaves only missing one out of 8. Bowled with several other balls including my two Deadly aims!

Funny the movement that the Red-Tank has is VERY similar to the Deadly aim!

The motiv urethane ball has a VERY controllable nice steady, NOT snappy, arc! I just might use it on the synthetic house patter too.
I did have a first game of 192, then the 247.

247 with a urethane ball is more impressive than a 289 with resin.

Urethane doesn't effectively follow the oil line like resin, and if you get urethane too close to the oil, it hits like a wet paper sack.

Getting that "ark" to end up in the pocket, and carry means you threw to ball with more consistent speed, and accuracy compared to what is required for a resin ball to skid, snap, roll to the pocket.

With a resin ball the oil makes the skid part a straight line, the high friction makes the ball go into a straight roll, so the only part that is left to the bowler with a resin ball is, the short change of direction in the hook phase.

I don't get it? Refinished lanes, inspected, and ready for play yet no 200 games, and many real low scores! Crazy low scores as I walked around
looking at the over head projector! 48 bowlers,,,, on that league.. I did have a few 600's last year, and a few high games, but Wow, what a crappy start for everyone this year!!!!

Is Good, Wood that much more difficult... I know my average there was a good 20 pins lower then most other synthetic places!
I must say Gladstone was tough with oil complaints last year too.... But last Thursday was like finding a pin in a haystack,,,,,,, ,, that line to the pocket with carry!

Many were complaining,,, for me it was carry,,, lots of 10 pins, even with adjustments I thought might correct the unprecedented low scores
by all!

I am beginning to think from the bottom of my godly heart that its true: REAL MEN BOWL ON WOOD!

A 700 at these lanes are almost like a 800 on the synthetic....

There are several 200 average bowlers on that league, that are in the same boat! 200's at other lanes, not Plattsburg! NO 200 averages on that league last year.

It will be interesting to see how things pan out this week! At this point in time it might be premature to say, wood is just a much tougher way to bowl high scores.

My "guess" Iceman is that the wood lanes were easier.

When I say "easier"...I don't mean to over-generalize...because as Mike so dramatically showed...wood lanes can be just as hard, actually much harder if your game and arsenal is suited for heavier and longer oil patterns.

This happened in a tournament this weekend. The owner of the pro shop hosted a tournament and I think he tried to give the center's patrons an edge by giving them a much shorter pattern to try and mimic the old wood lanes. The problem is, everyone had adjusted their game and/or arsenals to the center's 40ft flat pattern...so we were struggling almost as much as bowlers from other centers.

When I played on wood lanes, high speed seemed to work great...a ton of miss room right...a good 3 boards miss room left...good times! Now that the center has redone their lanes...people are going to have to learn to bowl and adapt to the new conditions.

Why you may be hitting light 'could' be due to your ball losing energy on the drier surface. If I recall, your ball speed is a bit lower...if you're throwing even a moderately aggressive ball...it could be losing a bunch of energy before it gets to the pocket. But that's a guess without actually seeing it.

I bowl on both wood an synthetics. I average 20 pins higher on synthetics between the two current houses. I am also bowling another league on wood in a different house this fall so we will see if the differences hold. As a lower speed bowler myself the transitions happen much faster on wood than synthetics and dry on synthetics is much easier to handle than on wood. I would also suggest trying out some lower end equipment such as Hammer Arson low flare, Storm Tropical Breeze or Ride, and the Radical Rack Attacks. From my experience the power guys can get away with throwing even heavy oil stuff on the wood lower speed requires more careful equipment selection.

I don't know of a single high average bowler at any of the wood alleys here that bowl on synthetics too that average higher on the wood. Power bowler or not. For those that are Rev challenged maybe as I tell my youngest daughter who struggles on the synthetics "At your home alley (wood) the friction is free here you got to work at it and use proper technique for the ball to hook".

How long before the league started did they resurface the lanes?

Back in 1985 I bowled in a scratch league at a Brunswick owned center.

Compared to the other centers around at that time, it had the most oil.

The center closed at the end of that season, and a new independent center opened across town just in time for September start dates.

Since I was bowling at a few different centers, I was accustomed to both oily and dry conditions. (not as far apart as oily and dry is now)

While I wasn't going to be bowling at the new location, I was asked if I could sub on the first night in the 9pm scratch league.

When we arrived, we heard that the lanes had not had any oil applied to them until that day.

The first league of the day started somewhere between noon and 3pm.

They had applied oil just before that league started.

Those bowlers complained about how dry the lanes were.

Before the 6pm league, they applied more oil (cleaning was not automated at that time).

The 6pm league complained about how dry the lanes were.

Before the 9pm league, they applied more oil.

I was the only one who shot 600 that first night, most others were barely 500.

By the end of that season, most of the bowlers were down 20 pins.

So what may be happening is the lanes in Plattsburg having been freshly cut, are absorbing oil into the wood.

Once that stabilizes, the scoring pace should return to normal, if not improve.

You had to stand way to the right, and loft the ball 15' to avoid the poor wood. But thats how you learned how to bowl.

You averaged about 160, thats far from working great.

What you call miss room, doesn't keep your ball in the pocket, it just keeps the ball out of the gutter.

If I recall, your ball speed is a bit lower...if you're throwing even a moderately aggressive ball...it could be losing a bunch of energy before it gets to the pocket. But that's a guess without actually seeing it.

A ball doesn't lose energy, except to heat and sound.

A portion of forward velocity is converted to rev rate, which allows the ball to roll into the pins.

The total energy of the ball (momentum both in direction of travel, and rotational) remains the same (minus the insignificant loss)

Again because you can't seem to grasp reality, the problem at Concourse was not an Oil issue, it was a **** poor wood condition issue.

You had to stand way to the right, and loft the ball 15' to avoid the poor wood. But thats how you learned how to bowl.

When you took that technique to other bowling centers, it didn't work there.
True...but just to play devil's advocate...if a bowler of < 6 months can figure out how to loft the heads and average in the high 160s...I'd expect a 20+ year bowling veteran to be able to compensate for even the chewed up heads at Concourse (pre-changeover). You make it seem like I grew up bowling there and have been for a decade. I bowled there 6 months...




The took away 8 feet of guiding oil, and people wonder why they did worse.
I just thought it was dumb that to help the home center bowlers be competitive...they changed the pattern the home center guys had become used to. And it wasn't just the home center guys struggling on that shorter, more narrow pattern...the guys from travel and scratch leagues at other OC centers were also struggling.




You averaged about 160, thats far from working great.
In fairness...I had bowling 6 months and was averaging like 166 when we faced off.



What you call miss room, doesn't keep your ball in the pocket, it just keeps the ball out of the gutter.
No...that's how it is on most THS shots...there's enough dry to keep you out of the gutter but a miss 3-4 boards right and you're hitting light or washing out. On the WOOD lanes...a 6-7 board miss still hit pocket. Bunny claimed there was a "groove" or "track" that had been pounded into the wood lanes over time...and all you had to do was get the ball in that track and you could hit pocket. I don't think it was quite THAT bad...but maybe she was right.

I have seen numerous examples of lower speed bowlers, very little revs or axis tilt...and once their ball gets to the breakpoint it starts to hook...then kinda just rolls out and misses right. That same ball, with a high rev rate...is gonna react much better when it hits the dry...more energy, more hook, sharper angle, and the only hope is it enters the roll phase as it gets to the pocket.

A spinning object, absolutely has potential/stored energy and that energy is released when the ball's rev rate is low enough and/or the lane surface/pattern is dry enough. If you don't believe that, then how would you explain pocket hits that leave a 7-pin or flat 10-pin??

Remember these guy's like to punch numbers on the oil machine and try out different patterns almost every week. Not so much sports patterns, but different lengths of the oil, from what I am told!

I bowl my best games on the 42 foot patters,,, did have some nice series last year! But when they shorten it up to 35, what a difference.

No matter what adjustment I made, very erratic.... that was last year, after 3 years of leagues and no resurfacing.

Too Early to say how its going to work out this year. One thing for sure its never a blocked pattern!

In some ways its a blast not knowing.... and trying to figure it out.

Last week was a disaster, score wise for all the bowlers... sort of funny! Everyone complaining, but still having a GREAT TIME!

One Farm boy brought a half a pig cooked and sliced up, to share, along with a couple cases of beer.

Nothing like it anywhere else I know of! Chris and Lee, that run the place even have an refrigerator for drinks anyone brings!!

I swear that old wood lane alley in Plattsburg has a feel that is not like Any OTHER bowling alley I have ever know!

Its the 1960's frozen in time, with great fellowship to go along with it.

I just might make one of my Cherry/Apple pies for this coming Thursday!! hummm,,, hum!

It very well could be the fact that the lanes got resurfaced. Perhaps they had developed a groove. The place I bowl resurfaced their wood lanes last summer.

Maybe it was the oil, and pattern.... looking forward to this Thursday, maybe a better pattern.

It's hard to give an honest appraisal when they really don't have a house shot!

I averaged 210 there before BPAA mandates the blocking of lanes.

Sounds like you have a bunch of Farm Boys trying to find a pattern they like most.

Odds are all they are doing is selecting one of the preprogrammed patterns.

Kegel.net has a library of oil patterns, with the information required to create the pattern.

Thats were you feed in all the details, not just select this one or that one.

Those machines are actually quite programmable, but that also means if the person doing it doesn't know what they are doing, they could really create an unplayable pattern.

This process is constantly occurring until the ball reaches the roll phase, so the ball builds up momentum across the lane.

The more cross lane momentum the ball achieves, the more the ball will drive thru the pins, but likewise, it's harder to be accurate with all that cross lane momentum.

So what you see generating high scores with resin balls and a THS is a ball that slides left to right early on, and it only goes as far right as it needs to encounter enough friction to stop the left to right momentum. That will cause the ball to lose some of the Axis of Rotation, but hopefully not all.

The ball will try to hook left, but left of it's path is heavy oil, so it follows the edge of the oil.

As the ball approaches the end of the pattern, the oil thins, and left of the balls path isn't as heavy of oil, so ball will begin to hook again.

With enough rev rate, and axis of rotation left in the ball, it will build up right to left momentum.

It seems to me that the friction will convert at least some of the KE(v) into heat. After all, it's heat that causes a reactive resin ball to change its surface characteristics and give a stronger reaction than polyester or urethane.

As for heat making the balls more tacky, that may have been true of the early reactive resin balls.

I am bowling this year on 4 leagues, one of them being the hollowed wood grounds of that beautiful old school, 6 lane alley! It's 37.5 miles each way just for the challenge, that and the great fellowship, and people that bowl those lanes!

Something about the WOOD and them FARM boys,,,,,,, their earthiness,,,,,,, that makes the whole trip worth wild!

They all bring their own drinks, beer, whisky, drinks, you name it.... one might bring some fresh butchered meat, beer, pork, ect.. They share it all with one another. I sometimes think what a wonderful world this would be if everyone else got along as well as we do there! I don't drink, but do buy from the alley two bottles of purified water at the price of .50 cents per bottle... (CRAZY LOW PRICE), and if the meat is organic, with no growth hormones or antibiotics, I will partake!!

I find the experience one step away form being with the god's in the heavens!

No need to tell me to stick to wood,,, LOL,,, its my favorite place to bowl! ( I WOOD drive 49.6 miles, if that's what it took to bowl this vanishing breed of bowling lanes. I like the challenge of those 6 sacred,,,,,,,,,, blessed,,,,,,, consecrated,,,,,,, hallowed lanes!

What would my life be like NOW without them......(:(

When I first saw it, I thought the place had 12 lanes, but you were only planing on using 6 for the "RMBOWWCIO"

But then the picture showed only 6 lanes between the walls, so a red flag was raised.

I've heard of leagues that were bigger than the center doing multiple shifts.

Some teams bowl early, some bowl late, so you had to keep an eye on the schedule to know what time to show up.

As for dreaming in numbers.... you don't want to know how bad it can get sometimes.
