View Full Version : When to resurface your ball

When should I resurface my Hyper Cell? What sort of ball reaction should I be looking for that tells me it's time. I have noticed recently that I have been leaving more 10 pins than usual. I have a good amount of games used with it.

Contact the manufacturer on their website and ask them. Most places say clean it every time you use it, and resurface it every 30 - 45 games. I resurface my DV8 Marauder Mutiny once a month, and clean it after every time I bowl.

I freshen the surface about every 15 games on my asylum just hit it for a few seconds with whatever surface it is at currently 2000 and do a completed resurface about every 75

How many times can you resurface a ball?
Amyers

I don't know if there is a limit you are only removing thin layers off so you could completely resurface a ball many times before running out of coverstock

I wouldn't resurface as much as some people would. I typically go a couple months of use before I would put it up on my spinner and resurface.
I would say once the ball stops reacting to lanes they way it used to or you have a definite track showing on the ball it is probably ready. I clean my balls everytime after use so it helps to keep some oil from loading up in them.
My own $.03.

Using a surfaace scanner it has been shown that the surface texture of a current ball changes significantly over the course of 3 games. Common practice nowdays is to refresh the surface every 15 games and a full resurface every 75-100
vdubtx
10-29-2014, 06:34 PM
And by refresh, you typically only do the last step in the resurface process for the particular ball. The last step for a Hyper Cell is to take 2000-grit Abralon and Sand for 10 seconds on all four sides with light pressure.
For Roto-Grip balls, this link is very informative: Roto-Grip Resurface Instructions (http://www.rotogrip.com/download.php?obj_id=956)

You will have a lot of problems long before running out of coverstock.
Coverstock is usually about 1/2" thick.
The USBC rules on diameter have a difference between a ball too big, and one too small of about 1/10"
The ball return mechanism is fairly sensitive to the ball's size, and how much oil is on the surface.
You're more likely to have a resin ball shrink on it's own than sand 1/10" off of it.

i just got my rumble back from my proshop and he actually talked with roto-grip and they said to him to tell me that i should take a 2000 grit pad to my ball after every 10 games, so that is just over a week, It will help so the ball does not change as fast and normal (as in hook wise proshop's words).
All i have to do first and wait for my new shipment of polish to come in before i can do it i used the rest of my testing out new surfaces on it last night.
doing the 2000 on it every 10 games is not with a ball spinners but by hand with not much pressure at all, I will just use a ball spinner to put the polish back on the ball, makes it easier and faster

Circlecity, Usually 40-50 games is about right for most balls. It is very important though to clean after every set as i'm sure you know. I have never been one to get crazy with resurfacing a lot. It always seems odd to me to hear guys talk about doing anything other than a good cleaning until something more is needed. I have had bowling balls that i hated out of the box and when it got some lane shine on it loved it. When you start messing with resurfacing at home or at the pro shop you need really consider what you are looking for. Good luck to you.

I would have your pro shop rejuvenate it (de-oil and resurface) - the de-oiling is generally much more effective.

If your ball is not reacting like it was when it was new a good de-oiling and a resurfacing is all you might need instead of going out and buying a new ball.

You can have bowlingball.com resurface your ball for $29, pretty good deal for me considering my bowling alley charges $60 to resurface.. Bowlingball.com also pays for the shipping both ways.

I don't think $30 is such a great deal, its just that your bowling alley has such a bad deal.
For $30, I de-oil, and diamond grind (Haas) the ball back to "perfect" round, then sand to the desired grit, and polish if needed.
If all you need is the sanding multiple grits, and polish if needed, I charge $5.

Polish that is intended for bowling does not clog pores.
It's like a fine liquid sandpaper.
A Luster King (intended for Rubber, Plastic, Urethane) applies a wax like substance to the surface, and that clogs pores of reactive resin.

If you read Mo's comments about polish, he prefers a sanded only ball because he feels he can be more consistent in replicating the surface each time.

I thought I had seen something from him along the lines of :Thousands of dollars in research and development and then you put something on it that clogs it pores: That is not an exact quote and I may have seen it somewhere else or improperly attributing it to him. Looked but I couldn't find it quickly so I may have been incorrect on that one.

VERY REASONABLE,,, do you have picture of the Diamond grind? Or a link,,, sounds interesting! After you bowl the Plattsburg" Real Men Bowl on Wood in Small Bowling Establishments!" You will probably want to sale your house in CA, and move to Plattsburg!! We could use a Good Pro Shop with reasonable Rates!

I have to agree 100 percent about the Polish! My Virtual Gravity nanno looks like marble beautiful deep shine, and it hooks like a monster!!!
Its the one with POLISH that gave me that last 300, and 780! I SWEAR BY THE STUFF,,,! Polish does not clog a darn thing!
If fact my older IQ pearl the one that gave me my first perfect game, lost its great movement when the ball became dull. Pro shop guy looked at it and said it was burning up! I put the Storm Reacta shine on the ball using my spinner ,,, and it was like BORN AGAIN, sweet jesus!!
I have to agree with mike white on this view, and its only a view.

The diamond "Grind" he's referring to are the "diamond grit wheels" that are used on the Haus and Cook sphere machines.

how long do the diamond wheels last on average? I would think quit some time, with diamond being so durable! Also Mike when you put a ball on it to resurface, does the amount of time depend on the depth of the surface scratches?
How long does and average ball take to resurface with this diamond wheel.
I know when I do a resurface Its probably not nearly as precise as this unit! Cool
I have seen machines like the uncovered one with pads, instead of diamond wheels? Any pictures of the wheels? Do they come with various types of wheels?

The other wheels use J-hook wheels (velcro) and you just use abralon and scotchbrites pads on them.

Be sure to de-oil from time to time. It really makes a difference. I hear guys talk about how their bowling balls "died" and were no longer reacting effectively. I have a ball spinner and the innovative ball reviver and I haven't had a ball die on me. My Mutant Cell is 5 years old and still reacts like when I first got it. The ball has thousands of games on it.

I have one of these, and since you're not my customer :) It's well worth the money.
Had you been one of my customer, I'd have to go through some long song and dance about how hard it is to babysit the ball, then wipe it down, then repeat until it stops emitting oil. Hey I have to justify the cost somehow :)
Personally I hit the ball with 360 grit first, then put the ball in the reviver.
If there wasn't any oil coming out of the ball after then 1st 15 minutes (i.e. it didn't need to be revived) then all I charge for is the sanding / polishing process.

I'm telling you with 110% certainty that it is INSANE to pay that kind of money when you can get the SAME results from my method with very very very VERY little added effort or risk.

Agreed you can do a lot more with your own personal ball spinner
that polishing machine would be more for a nostalgia type piece of
equipment a blast from the past so to speak.
For $750 you could buy 3 ball spinners or 1 ball spinner and maybe
a couple of years or maybe almost a lifetime of siaair/abralon pads

I think on this website, with all its wonderful information, a little humor is ok too! ;) I have The Hyper-Cell also, fantastic ball that has given
me some GREAT games and series!
I do have a spinner, and pretty much follow the manufactures guide. I even experiment with storm polish on it for a different look, and it looked great. Only reason I didn't leave the polish on, I have several other pearl balls including the Byte, Deadly Aim that get the ball DOWN and in, with the that same look.
