View Full Version : What would you think if a pro shop guy said this..

"You should spend the about amount on your ball (in dollars) as your average"

To me, this makes NO sense.

Same here. I think he wants the guys and gals who average 150 throwing plastic to upgrade to something a lot more expensive.

Funny, I take it to mean that the guys and gals who average 150 and spend over $200 for a ball are wasting their money. I tend to agree with him.

Sounds like a pro shop that is not only trying to screw over their customers, but is also too lazy/unknowledgeable to guide people to the proper ball choice.

Valid point Rob, maybe they are trying to keep people from overspending on equipment...I should think before judging.

Thats almost certainly what he meant.

A 99 average person spending $99 on a ball makes sense. Spending $199 on a ball doesn't.

Conversely, a 200 average bowler buying a $79 entry level ball...probably also makes little sense.

Granted, the 200 average bowler may need an entry level ball for some particular reason...dry conditions in a tournament, a shorter sport pattern, or they just have an extremely high rev rate and can't control a more expensive ball...or already have 6 more expensive balls and need another one.

But yes, I agree with Rob, the pro shop guy is probably trying to tell you/whomever not to waste their money in a nice way...which in my book makes them a BETTER pro shop owner by not selling you something you don't need.

I agree he's talking about people overspending on equipment. I've seen lots of low average bowlers using high priced balls when a lot cheaper one (priced like their ave) would do.

Yeah, that's how I took it. A $200 ball isn't going to do a guy throwing a 140 average any good.

HEY!! I resemble that remark!

Although...technically I've never spent more than $104.95 on a ball. And my average has never been below 117...so I'm good.

Not always true my Avg was way low and my equipment was not getting the job done. I'm using a crux and zero G and now I'm avg. 45 pins more every game ;) but for the most part he is very right.

Well, if Mike or JScrub or anyone else has a "magical ball" that will get me some 300 games, a 200+ average, and an 800 series....I'd GLADLY pay $300 for it.

Granted...if it isn't that magical...and doesn't get me those things....I expect that I can have it for free.

Let me know if there are any takers on the above offer!! #foolsmoneyeasilyparted

Each of the four of my balls in the past four years have cost $100 or less. I'm averaging 200. The type/cost of a ball really depends on what type of ball/reaction you are looking for. I always look to fill a gap in my balls. Right now, I have a heavy oil, medium and spare ball. (my other ball is dead). I have a gap between medium and heavy oil that I need to take care of in the near future.

I hope that's not a jab at me for spending what I have. I found that on the lanes we bowl with my higher speed and lower revs that a strong cover and lower RG helped my game. That's for me not for everyone.

Lower rg especially is smart to get the ball to rev up quicker because you state you have a lower rev rate. You said your average is up 45 pins. Is that from last year or from the start of this season? What average are at now? Glad to hear of your improvement, that is an impressive increase!

Price of the ball doesn't dictate the quality of the ball all the time. Lots of great mid level choices like the Roto Grip Wrecker which I got for $99 and average well over 200 with it.

Thanks with the Zero G and Crux combo I'm doing better find it easy to read what the lanes and my ball are doing. I don't spend money expecting anything but I am at the point where I know what numbers and type of covers work best for my game at my house lanes.

There is usually a correlation between the price of the ball and the relative "strength" of the ball. The top tier of balls are mostly asymmetrically-cored balls with early-rolling low rgs, and very aggressive cover materials. That being said, there are a lot more cases of bowlers who use balls that are much too strong for their bowling styles, than there are of bowlers who don't average as high as they could because their balls aren't strong enough for them.

Thats what I was trying to say...unsuccessfully...

I just threw my second 300 of the year with a Brunswick Ringer Platinum Pearl I got online for $89.00. It's in their " economy line " of balls. Great on dry conditions like I had that day. My first 300 was with my DV8 Marauder Mutiny I paid $99.00 for. No need for $200+ balls.

If we're talking bang per buck, my 300 was with a $45 Polar Ice.

I was gonna say that PDW won with an iQ Pearl (a good ball -- but symmetrical and not Storm's strongest ball), but a 300 with a Polar Ice beats that...

I shot a 298 at age 15 with a white dot. hehehe but yeah I agree with Rob's post about price and strength of ball. Has it always been that way?

Back in the early 80's when I first got in the game most companies didn't make 25 or more different balls they made a 3 or 4 plastic, 3 or 4 urethane, and in the mid 80's when reactive resin got popular they made 1 or 2 of those and that was it. This included the big companies like Hammer and Colombia. I don't remember their being more than $10 or $15 dollars difference between any of the same type of ball (plastic, urethane, resin). Their was a significant price difference between urethane and resin though. about $50 bucks seem like to me which was a decent amount of money back then.

You should spend what it costs to buy, fit, and drill the ball that best matches up with your speed/revs/release and the conditions that you're bowling on.

I have a lot of very pricey bowling balls that can sit on the shelf a chunk of the time because they don't see enough oil to be my best choice.

The California State Tournament in Stockton. I was bowling doubles with Jimbo. Shot 700 series with a 156 average. so yeah, I won most of everything.
