Okay...I'll start Sunday...because while I can sort of remember what me and my teammates were throwing this past Sunday...I can't remember what BOTH guys on the other team were throwing...no league tonight due to our center deciding to close down leagues for 3 weeks so they can host work christmas parties and provide entertainment for college kids home for Christmas break.

Nothing new on the other team. We were bowling for last place on position night tonight and got swept (worthless teammates! hehe. Next one we'll do better). I had no idea what the other team was throwing because I didn't inspect the equip closely but none had ball changes and all balls were really worn.

My pair last night: storm iq gold, storm nano, hammer deadly aim, roto grip wrecker, storm wipe out, columbia freeze pearl, roto grip uproar, original black hammer. We are all listing what balls are used on our pairs, but what are your observations about that equipment and the bowlers using them? How is it affecting the lane and what you are trying to do and the moves it forces you to make? For example, last night we bowled a team with a guy that likes to use a old black hammer and play up 5-6-7. I like to play out starting most of the time so when i bowl against their team i have to make sure i don't touch any part of his line. He tends to create a out of bounds for me so i stay away from him. What are your thoughts about the changing lanes as affected by the equipment during your bowling?

For example, last night we bowled a team with a guy that likes to use a old black hammer and play up 5-6-7. I like to play out starting most of the time so when i bowl against their team i have to make sure i don't touch any part of his line. He tends to create a out of bounds for me so i stay away from him. What are your thoughts about the changing lanes as affected by the equipment during your bowling?

I think unless you're at the highest level of team competition, you play your A-game and everyone else plays their A-game and you don't worry about how their lines and your lines are messing with each other. It's like trying to mess with the other teams line. To be able to mess with other people, not interfere with your teammates, and at the same time bowl well yourself is asking a lot of bowlers that in many cases can't hit a 1-3 board target consistently.

This season I've lucked out because two of the bowlers on my team are straight bowlers with non-reactive equipment so the don't interfere with me at all. One other guy is a lefty so he isn't on my line. It's only our anchor I have to worry about and he's a speed dominant player so we're not playing the EXACT same line. Last season was more challenging because we had 3 rightys all playing outside of 2nd arrow. And the anchor on that team threw the ball very similar to me...so we might be playing the identical line all night. Might be another reason why my average dropped midway through the season when he upgraded from urethane to a reactive resin ball.

I'm struggling with the same thing due to the center flooding the lanes in the morning and leaving them that way all day and for leagues.

There's not much you can do about carry-down. It's not something you can "read" very well. It's either there or it isn't. And if it's there…you almost have to play a straighter shot right at the pocket, which leaves very little room for error and a lower strike rate. OR…you have to find a ball that will read better midland. So that means putting the Pearls back in the bag…and maybe the hybrids…and just throwing solid cover stocks. Again…it's a harder shot…relies on precision…and you're not gonna get that energy so you may hit light a lot…but there's nothing really that can be done about significant carry down.

Significant carry-down…for righties especially, takes away the dry target area almost completely. So an angular pearl is going to miss…almost certainly. And the hybrid,depending on how aggressive the cover stock, is going to struggle to make that turn as well…depending on the amount of carry down. So now you're stuck either trying to play more up the middle and hope theres some small dry area somewhere around the headpin that you can find (good luck with that)…or you have to move right and throw a solid cover and take that high track in a la 1980s…and just hope the ball still has enough power to carry.

Carry down was thought to be a thing of the past. But in situations like these…where centers are simply not doing their job in presenting a playable pattern for their league bowlers…carry down can be more crippling than a sport shot. A sport shot HAS dry area. It's harder to hit…but it's there. A THS with oil smeared up the side to the headpin…there's NO DRY. And thats a tough pattern.

I sometimes throw a Pyramid that I won in a contest (Good ball. I think I had it drilled up wrong for me though so I can only use it in certain situations.)

Radical is becoming more and more common here in Central IL. have seen their stuff in several leagues yeti, grease Monkey, Guru, score are all ones that I have seen. seems to work well for those throwing it.

The guy using the Hammer VIRAL almost shot a 300-game with one of the most half-*** deliverys ever. And my teammate kinda struggled using the Hyper Cell Skid because it was just too much ball for his ball speed (shy of 10mph). At one point (older guy) he said, "This ball just skids...and then abruptly snaps." I responded, "It is called a Hyper Cell SKID...you realize that right?" So he was trying to increasse his speed or move outside or move his target around...ALL to get this ball to work for him. He needs to talk to RobM....about adapting to what the lane gives you rather than try to force a ball to work that clearly isn't. You can't throw a Hyper Cell Skid 10mph outside of 15 and then be repeatedly surprised that it dives through the middle.

I usually notice the name on the rack. I know what my team's throwing so it's just the other ones on there. I often miss one or it's too worn to tell what it is, especially for older balls I'm not too familiar with what they are/were. Newer ones that you see a lot of are pretty distinctive and easy to tell though

I usually just look over the course of the series. I make a game of it trying to figure out all 5 opposing team balls before the 3-game series ends. I've only asked a couple times. Most of the time you'll eventually get a good enough look at the balls on the rack that you'll be able to read the name. And if you can read the name/brand...you can always google it and get information on it.

I recently moved to the Cleveland Ohio area and am now bowling in a league that has been around for more than 50 years. One of the old fellows on our team has bowled in the league for 50 years and takes pride on the fact that he has the same ball he was bowling with 20 years ago. Personally, I have been buying a new ball every two years or so and now have a Roto Grip Unhinged as my primary ball with a Storm Reign as back up. (These are both 15 lbs). Also have a Storm Punchout that is only 14 lbs and not used much any more along with a 16 lb Black Widow that served well in the past. Wish I still had my 14 lb Hyroad but gave that away.

I hadn't noticed it until back when this thread started and I started keeping track. But yes, Motiv is quite popular here.

The one that first stood out to me was the Motiv Primal Rage, it seemed like everyone had one. Next was the Motiv Venom Shock.

I just got my first Motiv the Paranoia, still learning it but looks good so far. My team mate got one last season and I liked how it looked, it had this real nice solid roll through the pins.

Some companies are real regional, like Lane #1, Seismic, Visionary. You only see them in certain areas.

Radical is still trying to make it's mark, They got some good stuff now. But until they start showing a big presence on Tv like Motiv did, their going to lag behind the others.

Before I started throwing lane masters I had 2 Phaze and hated both them. Lol

That seems to be the majority opinion on the Phaze but I love it. It's so unpopular I'm waiting and hoping my PSO discounts the price on the one 15 pounder he still has in the shop then I'd buy it.

The early adopters with the Phaze seemed to be some of the worst rolling balls I've ever seen and there were quite a few on my Saturday night league. The people that purchased it later on the balls seemed to roll much better. I'm guessing the PSO's figured out how to drill the ball. At best even of the later ones it appears to be a ball that likes only certain conditions and to play with limited styles. I won one in a tip drawing and traded it for a Brunswick Vintage Danger Zone which has been a great ball for me. Most balls match up with somebody some are just more forgiving than others.
