View Full Version : Why so many adjustments?

I've been a speed dominant player for most of the 6 months that I've been bowling. over the last couple of months I've adjusted my approach up to the line and had a good run of breaking 200 at least a few times every time I go out. Unfortunately I was walking towards my target instead of perpendicularly towards the foul line so I would end up on a different board. This made playing deeper very difficult and I ran out of room quickly. About a month or so ago, I changed up my approach so that I walk straight towards the foul line (perpendicular) and throw towards my mark. I also had my drilling's adjusted so that the pitch of the thumb is better and it allows me to stay behind the ball better. This has created, perhaps, a rev dominant scenario. finally feel like I can execute consistently and have my spare game back, but I'm finding that I have to adjust so often. If I find a great line it seems like I have to abandon it and move after 4 or 5 throws.. sometimes less, and this is playing by myself or with just my wife and son... not a full squad.. This appears to be the case with both my Optimus and my Hyroad Pearl, so I don't believe its because of super aggressive equipment.
One last thing... At the end of my 6 game session I was playing 31 to 18 on a 42 foot house pattern with my Optimus.. For the last couple of throws of the last game I went back to my Hyroad Pearl and played 17 to 11 and 19 to 12, but I picked up my speed a bit... 17 to 11 was a brooklyn strike.. 19 to 12 was a pocket hit that left the 10.
Diagnosis? Is this just an issue of needing to pick up my speed? Are these rev dominant problems or are these kind of adjustments normal?
If I do need to pick up speed when playing deeper should I drift a little left and push back right with my slide step to get a little more on the ball or should I be addressing the speed with a higher back swing?

Bob if you are bowling during open bowling this is definitely possible. What you may be seeing is that the track area from 8-13 is already worn in by league bowlers from the night before or earlier in the day. When your not bowling on fresh conditions anything is always possible. I know if I'm bowling the next day after the oil is applied I'm going to be at least 5 boards farther right with my feet and 3 with my target if not more. On the second day I'm going to be throwing plastic and if it's day three I'll be playing my plastic ball on a line like you were with your Optimus. It's really hard to tell much from session to session bowling in open conditions as you never really know what has been done to the oil pattern before you go there.
You may be adjusting into areas that the oil has already been depleted forcing you to just keep moving. One of the nice things about league bowling at least in my houses I know I'm bowling on fresh so if it's way different I can usually be sure it's probably me. Not that lanes don't change from day to day but the changes are smaller than what I see in open bowling

Maybe that is it.. Even the league I was doing the last few months was an "Adult/youth" league that they didn't bother oiling before hand. (It was my family and one other family that made up the league). I"ll keep doing what I'm doing and experiencing different conditions and not try to adjust anything with my game just yet. On the plus side, its giving me a lot of practice playing deeper lines and TRYING to diagnose lane conditions. One of my last weeks of this Adult/Youth league the pair we were bowling on had me standing 10 boards different between the two lanes. I just had a thought as well.. 4 shots before a move is 8 frames when playing on a pair.. so maybe the frequency isn't so unusual and I just need to trust myself and move before I get a nasty split.

It's just a punctuation issue.
Easy plan to make, always more difficult to do. good luck.

AH HA!!! I just had a revelation as to my adjustment issues. I had been discussing how I've had to make so many adjustments and in other threads talking about the difficulty I've had keeping my ball to the right of the head pin as I move deeper.
It turns out the last two weeks of the Adult/Youth league I was doing with my wife and son ended with a whimper. Looking at the results I saw a sharp drop off in my scores after the first game. (209, 165, 160/ 188, 162, 147 after maintaining a 184 average throughout the first 8 weeks) Turns out this is EXACTLY the same two weeks my wife got a more aggressive bowling ball which she tends to throw all over the 3rd and 2nd arrow. Last night I started well and as I needed to adjust my target I started running into trouble again.. Either trouble staying to the right of the head pin as I approached the 3rd arrow or issues with leaving 4's and 10's. I finally hit me that I was running into my wife's line when trying to adjust... I jumped way outside and increased my axis of rotation and the strikes started coming back.
