I was really struggling last night in the league. The way Im bowling is I go up to the line and throw the ball from the line. I am being told I need to start further back from the line but I am having trouble with the timing. Any Suggestions?

Maybe try watching this:

Then see if there's a coach in your area, it could help a lot!

For something that might fit your style are the following videos for what's called the one step drill.

One Step Drill instruction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DrO7EC4Jy4
USBC One Step demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ23LKBLemw

This drill, if followed well, will help you can your body in a great position at the line. Notice the non-sliding leg used to balance the bowler at the finish position and a nice, non-muscled, pendulum swing of the ball down the lane.
Hope this helps...

The approach that seems to work best for most bowlers with respect to timing is a four step approach.

First you need to figure out where to start from; go up to the foul line and turn your back to the pins, with your heels an inch or so away from the line. Take four and a half normal steps back toward the settee area and turn around. Make note of where your feet are in relation to the dots on the approach. your slide foot, the one on the side opposite of your bowling hand should be in line with where it was when you were throwing from the line.

The approach itself starts with the ball being pushed forward toward your target as the ball side foot starts forward. As the foot hits the approach and your weight starts to transfer to that foot, let the ball drop into the swing. For now just walk as normally as possible straight ahead. For most people this will give you the correct timing at release. If you're used to throwing with a one or no step approach this will not feel normal. Give it a chance, Just focus on getting the ball into the swing at the right time. Some people find that they can't push the ball out as they start the first step. For them it helps to add a step, starting with the other foot and pushing away on the second step.
Good luck!
