PBA Titlist and USBC Hall of Famer George Howard Dies at Age 78
Kalamazoo, Mich. - 1/27/2009

Five-time PBA Titlist and United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer George Howard died Jan. 25 in Kalamazoo, Mich., of complications from pneumonia. He died six days shy of his 79th birthday.

Howard, a one-time member of the fabled Stroh’s Bohemian Beer team in Detroit, was a five-time Professional Bowlers Association titlist, including the 1960 Showboat Invitational in Las Vegas. While he never won a USBC Open Championships title, he had three runner-up finishes among his seven top 10 finishes.

He was inducted into the USBC Hall of Fame in 1986. He also is a member of the Michigan and Kalamazoo Metro Bowling Halls of Fame.

Allen is survived by his wife Mary, children Brenda (Will) Hamiln, Georgette (Dave) Hall, Gregory (Jo Ann) Howard, Linda Piechocki, Sandy
(Steve) Yonker, William (Colleen) Piechocki and Carol Chaney, 10 grandchildren and brother William. He was preceded in death by a grandchild and four brothers and sisters.

Visitations were scheduled at Life Story Funeral Home, 5975 Lovers Lane, Kalamazoo, today from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday from 2-8 p.m.
(Eastern). Funeral services are planned for St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1150 W. Center Ave., Kalamazoo, Friday at 11 a.m.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to any youth bowling scholarship fund or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Howard’s name.
